The umbrella value of caribou management strategies for biodiversity conservation in boreal forests under global change

<p><span>Single-species conservation management is often proposed to preserve biodiversity in human-disturbed landscapes. How global change will impact the umbrella value of single-species management strategies remains an open question of critical conservation importance. We assessed the effectiveness of threatened boreal caribou as an umbrella for bird and beetle conservation under global change. We combined mechanistic, spatially explicit models of forest dynamics and predator-prey interactions to forecast the impact of management strategies on the survival of boreal caribou in boreal forest. We then used predictive models of species occupancy to characterize concurrent impacts on bird and beetle diversity. Landscapes were simulated based on three scenarios of climate change and four of forest management. We found that strategies that best mitigate human impact on boreal caribou were an effective umbrella for maintaining bird and beetle assemblages. While we detected a stronger effect of land-use change compared to climate change, the umbrella value of management strategies for caribou habitat conservation were still impacted by the severity of climate change. Our results showed an interplay among changes in forest attributes, boreal caribou mortality, as well as bird and beetle species assemblages. The conservation status of some species mandates the development of recovery strategies, highlighting the importance of our study which shows that single-species conservation can have important umbrella benefits despite global change.</span></p>

The paradigm of tax-reward and tax-punishment strategies in the advancement of public resource management dynamics

<p>In contemporary society, the effective utilization of public resources remains a subject of significant concern. A common issue arises from defectors seeking to obtain an excessive share of these resources for personal gain, potentially leading to resource depletion. To mitigate this tragedy and ensure sustainable development of resources, implementing mechanisms to either reward those who adhere to distribution rules or penalize those who do not, appears advantageous. We introduce two models: a tax-reward model and a tax-punishment model, to address this issue. Our analysis reveals that in the tax-reward model, the evolutionary trajectory of the system is influenced not only by the tax revenue collected but also by the natural growth rate of the resources. Conversely, the tax-punishment model exhibits distinct characteristics when compared to the tax-reward model, notably the potential for bistability. In such scenarios, the selection of initial conditions is critical, as it can determine the system's path. Furthermore, our study identifies instances where the system lacks stable points, exemplified by a limit cycle phenomenon, underscoring the complexity and dynamism inherent in managing public resources using these models.</p>

Database to: Effectiveness of soil management strategies for mitigation of N2O emissions in European arable land: A meta-analysis

<p>Database to a meta-analysis studing the effects of adding different organic matter inputs (crop residues, green manure, livestock manure, slurry, digestate, compost or biochar) to soils on N2O emissions. Database consists of over 50 field experiments conducted in 15 European countries. Diverse arable crops, mainly cereals, were cultivated in monoculture or in crop rotations on mineral soils. &nbsp;Cumulative N2O emissions per unit land area were monitored during periods of 30 to 1,070 days in treatments, which received organic matter inputs, alone or in combination with mineral N fertiliser; and in controls fertilised with mineral N. The original results appeared in 46 articles published between 1993 and 2022 in peer-reviewed scientific journals, as well as a project report, and a PhD thesis.</p>

Cost Management in Cloud Computing: a study on financial waste and correction strategies

<p>This project explores the identification and mitigation of financial wastage in Cloud Computing (CC) operations by professionals in the field, examining the alignment of their strategies with FinOps guidelines. Through a survey distributed via social media and messaging apps to CC professionals, the study engaged 28 participants from various companies, sizes, and sectors. It revealed that these professionals have encountered cost-related issues in cloud applications, particularly financial wastage. The investigation aimed to understand the prevalence of financial wastage in CC and evaluate the effectiveness of the adopted practices in addressing these inefficiencies within the framework of FinOps principles.</p>

From forest strategy to measures: what are forest owner attitudes & area size responses toward climate-proof forest management in Sweden and the Netherlands?

Comparing and Combining Existing and Emerging Data Collection and Modeling Strategies in Support of Signal Control Optimization and Management (Project M2)

<p>For decades, traffic signal management agencies have used signal timing optimization tools combined with fine-tuning of signal timing based on field observations in their updates of time-of-day signal timing plans.&nbsp;&nbsp;These traditional signal optimization methods and tools use very limited amount of data and depend on default values in the signal timing optimization/simulation tools to estimate network performance under different signal optimization strategies. In recent years, new data collection technologies are emerging including high resolution controller data, more advanced detection technologies such as video image detection that are based on vehicle tracking and possible integration with microwave detectors, automatic-vehicle based identification technologies, third party crowdsourcing data, connected vehicles, and connected automated vehicles data.&nbsp;&nbsp;The objective of the proposed study is to propose methods and algorithms to combine data collected from existing and emerging sources with enhanced models and optimization algorithms to optimize and manage signal operations. The results from applying the developed methods and algorithms will be compared with traditional signal timing and optimization methods currently used by transportation agencies.&nbsp;</p>
