Carbon Storage in Beaver Meadows of the Sierra Nevada, USA

<p><span>The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of active beaver dams on sequestered carbon in subalpine valleys of the Sierra Nevada across a temporal scale. Specifically, carbon stored in floodplain sediments and above and below ground vegetation was measured in 8 beaver meadows to quantify carbon storage.</span></p>

Data from: Shifts in ground-dwelling predator communities in response to changes in management intensity in Alpine meadows

<p>Here, we provide raw abundance data from a small-scale case study on the effects of management intensity on ground-dwelling macro-invertebrate communities in extensively and intensively managed hay meadows in South Tyrol, Italy. The fauna was sampled with the pitfall trap methods in two seasons (autumn 2018 and spring 2019). The predatory groups Araneae, Opiliones, Carabidae, Staphylinidae, and Formicidae were identified to species level, the rest &ndash; where possible &ndash; to family level.</p> <p>The data can be found as absolute numbers (i.e., individuals per pitfall trap) and as standardised numbers (i.e., individuals per sampling day). Additionally, we provide ecological species traits on rarity (for the area of South Tyrol), moisture requirements and ecological tolerance, as well as the Red List statuses.</p>

Rain exclusion, herbivory, and vegetaton in Greenstar Meadow at the University of Michigan Biological Station, Pellson, MI (2023)

Precipitation affects water availability, which subsequently influences plant growth, species persistence, and productivity. Critically, global change is causing precipitation patterns to shift, which can lead to changes in plant community composition and may affect the capacity of plant communities to perform essential ecosystem functions. We can use rainout shelters to intercept incoming ambient rainfall and simulate future precipitation conditions to better predict how plant communities may respond to shifts in precipitation. Here, we aimed to study if altered summer precipitation affects plant diversity and biomass by experimentally decreasing summer precipitation using rainout shelters. Furthermore, there can be two experimental plots under a single rainout shelter allowing us to test the combined effects of multiple factors on plant communities. So in addition to manipulating summer precipitation, we also manipulated the presence of insect herbivores using exclosures to quantify the independent and interactive effects of precipitation and insect herbivory on plant species richness, diversity, and biomass. The top-down effects of insect herbivores on plant communities can vary depending on plant water status, suggesting that precipitation and insect herbivory may have interactive effects on plant diversity, community composition, and biomass.

High-frequency sensor data from a YSI 600 OMS Optical Monitoring System (every 15 minutes) and Sontek IQ (every 10 minutes) in a meadow reach at White Clay Creek from February through December 2016. Funded by NSF and DEB as part of the LTREB grant to study the recovery of stream ecosystem structure and function during reforestation, Stroud Water Research Center. The parameters in this data package are water temperature, depth, turbidity, conductivity, specific conductance, water pressure, discharge, rivers ection area, and velocity. Data are presented in four tables which likely have significant overlap. The raw data table presents the data exactly as it was downloaded from the Aquarius Database. It is formatted as a "wide" human-readable table. IQ_stream and YSI_stream present only the data from the respective sensors. These tables are gapfilled so that there are no time gaps. Formatted as a "wide" human-readable table. The full_stream table is all of the data, raw and cleaned, from both sensors. It is organized as a long, tidy table and is optimal for machine readability. All of the parameters and table are further explained in the metadata.

Potentilla flowering phenology for Cabin Clearing, Elk Meadows and Rainbow Meadows, 2019.

To understand parent-hybrid dynamics in cinquefoil (Potentilla) species in the Colorado Rocky Mountains, I am estimating environmental overlap among parents and hybrids, interbreeding among parents and hybrids, and hybrid population growth in multiple natural populations at NWT and (not included here) the Rocky Mountain Biological Laboratory (RMBL). Since 2018, I have been monitoring populations at Rainbow Meadows Lower, Rainbow Meadows Upper, Elk Meadows South, and Cabin Clearing - sites that vary in cinquefoil composition. In 2019, my team and I recorded reproductive phenophases (e.g., vegetative, buds, flowering, setting seed) on tagged plants in June, July, and August. When plants began flowering, we estimated floral counts. Characterizing flowering phenology of parent and hybrid species in each site sheds light on the potential for ongoing interbreeding in different environments. NWT phenological data is shared here, and soil moisture and trait data from demographic monitoring are provided separately. This data was collected to test broad hypotheses about hybrid-parent dynamics in changing montane environments.

Moist meadow microbial respiration data for Saddle, 1993.

The effects of C, N, and water amendments on microbial respiration were assessed at monthly intervals throughout the 1993 snow-free season in laboratory incubations of moist meadow soils collected from the T1M trace gas study plot on Niwot Ridge. Total respiration was quantified at daily intervals throughout each 10- to 12-day incubation using a base trap method.
