Database for Study: Shear-wave elastography for assessment of trapezius muscle stiffness: reliability and association with low-level muscle activity
<p>This is the database for the study entitled <strong>Shear-wave elastography for assessment of trapezius muscle stiffness: reliability and association with low-level muscle activity. </strong>In this study, we explored the reliability of shear-wave elastography for assessment of the trapezius muscle stiffness and its relationship with low-level muscle activity.Twenty participants were included in a two-session experiment. Measurements of shear modulus and muscle activity were performed at rest and during low-level activity, induced by shoulder abduction without additional external resistance. Good to excellent intra-session repeatability (ICC > 0.80) and moderate inter-rater and inter-session reproducibility (ICC = 0.66-0.74) were observed. Typical errors were acceptable only for intra-session measurements in resting conditions. Inverse relationships between shear modulus and muscle activity at 40° and 60° of shoulder abduction (r = -0.53 and -0.57) were observed on a group level. We also found lower shear modulus in females, for perpendicular probe position and for the non-dominant side of the body. Previous studies have demonstrated positive within-individual relationships between muscle activity and shear modulus. Our results suggested that, at least when the activity levels are low, an inverse relationship exists between muscle activity and shear modulus on a group level, suggesting inherent passive stiffness could account for a larger portion of the variance (compared to muscle activity) in shear modulus when the muscle activity is low. Our results imply that shear-wave elastography can be used in research exploring muscle stiffness, however, caution is needed since only intra-session examination in resting conditions showed acceptable within-participant typical errors.</p>
Fractal analysis of muscle activity patterns during locomotion: pitfalls and how to avoid them
<p>Despite the lack of consensus on how to perform fractal analysis of physiological time series, many studies rely on this technique. Here, we shed light on the potential pitfalls of using the Higuchi’s fractal dimension (HFD) and the Hurst exponent (H). We expose and suggest how to solve the drawbacks of such methods when applied to data from normal and perturbed locomotion by combining <em>in vivo</em> recordings and computational approaches.</p> <p>In this supplementary data set we made available: a) the metadata file “metadata.dat”; b) the baseline signals file “baseline_data.RData”; c) the R script “fractal_analysis.R” to calculate the H and HFD of the baseline data and produce the log-log plots. Explanatory comments are profusely present throughout the script and in the metadata file.</p>

One trial was directed toward an horizontal target of the perturbed block and the other was directed toward a supination target of the baseline block.</p> <p>Then the code calculates the coherence between the MUs identified on the BB and on the TB (cross-muscle coherence) and the cross-muscle coherence after excluding the components synchronized with the norm of the endpoint force.</p> <p>Finally, the code plots the results.</p> <p>This code could easily be modified to compute all the relevant analyses presented in the paper, such as the total within muscle coherence and the within muscle coherences after excluding the components synchronized with the norm of the force or the sum of the firings of the antagonist muscle.</p>

Tongue cleaning enhances activity of suprahyoid muscles during exhalation in healthy young adults: A randomized controlled intervention study

The participants were divided into two groups: an intervention group that practiced tongue cleaning in addition to routine oral hygiene, and a control group that practiced only routine oral hygiene. sEMG was used to assess the myoelectric activity of the suprahyoid muscles during various actions, including inhalation, exhalation, head lifting, tongue pressure, and tongue cleaning. The sEMG data were presented as microvolt root mean squares (RMS). An examination was conducted at baseline and after the 4-week intervention period.
