Bulk atmospheric deposition data along an agricultural-to-urban transect, central Ohio, 2021-2022
As precipitation acidity in the United States has decreased dramatically over the past forty years, new questions have emerged about the role of base cations and nitrogen (N) species in regulating precipitation pH. To address these questions, we studied precipitation chemistry in Ohio, a state with high N deposition and a mix of urban, industrial, and agricultural land use. This dataset contains precipitation chemistry and the flux of particulate matter collected at four sites along an agricultural-urban transect in central Ohio over the summers of 2021 and 2022. Samples were collected weekly from three or five replicate passive bulk deposition collectors at each site. In the lab, we filtered the samples and calculated the flux of total particulate matter. Liquid samples were measured for pH, nitrate, ammonium, and major ions. This dataset is complete and will not be added to in the future.
Phosphorus concentrations and flow data, Old Woman Creek, Ohio, 2015-2023
The Old Woman Creek National Estuarine Research Reserve is located in Huron, Ohio (USA), along the southern shore of Lake Erie. Old Woman Creek is a fourth order stream that flows through a 0.6 km² wetland complex during its last 2 stream km, and surface connectivity between the stream and lake is mediated by a barrier sand beach that can open and close depending on flow, wind, waves, and precipitation. The Reserve has been measuring water quality in Old Woman Creek since 1980. Data presented in this package represent a small part of this long-term monitoring used in the study by Anderson et al. (2024, http://dx.doi.org/10.2139/ssrn.4947733) titled "We know less about phosphorus retention in constructed wetlands than we think we do: A quantitative literature synthesis". This study aims to identify gaps in our collective understanding of structural wetland features, monitoring methods, and long-term trajectories in restored and constructed wetlands. It uses the Old Woman Creek data presented in this data package to test different sampling frequencies to determine how sampling approach affects observed trends in total phosphorus loading. The data in this package include total phosphorus concentrations collected at the Inlet and Outlet of Old Woman Creek between 2015 and 2023. Total phosphorus concentrations were collected between 1 and 3 times per day at the Inlet and once per day to once per week at the Outlet, depending on streamflow. Additionally, flow data measured at 15-minute intervals at the stream Outlet between 2020 and 2023 are also included. This Outlet flow data corresponds well with flow measurements made by the United States Geological Survey (USGS) at the stream Inlet. While the Inlet flow data is not included in this package, it was used in the study by Anderson et al. (2024) and can be obtained from USGS's website by searching for gauge number 04199155. Augmentation and conservation biological control of Tetranychus urticae on hops in Ohio
<p class="MsoNormal"></p> <p class="MsoNormal">The twospotted spider mite, <em>Tetranychus urticae </em>Koch<em> </em>(Acari: Tetranychidae),<em> </em>is a key pest on hops grown in the Midwestern USA, where hop production is a new industry, and little research has been done on the management of <em>T. urticae</em>.<span> </span>In 2016 and 2017, we conducted an experiment to determine the efficacy of augmentative biological control of <em>T. urticae</em> populations on the cultivar 'Cascade' at four hop yards. <span> </span>In both years, treatments compared <em>Neoseiulus fallacis</em> Garman (Acari: Phytoseiidae), released at a high rate and a low rate, and an untreated control, with eight replicates in 2016 and 17 replicates in 2017. <span> </span>Additional treatments in 2016 evaluated <em>Galendromus</em> <em>occidentalis </em>Nesbitt<em> </em>(Acari: Phytoseiidae) released at a high and a low rate. The target low rate in both years was one predator per ten <em>T. urticae</em>. The target high rate was one predator per five <em>T. urticae</em> in 2016, and one predator per two <em>T. urticae</em> in 2017. <span> </span>When weekly monitoring showed that the population reached an action threshold of one <em>T. urticae</em> per ten leaves, predatory mites were released. <span> </span>If the <em>T. urticae</em> population continued to increase, a second release was made. <span> </span>By the time of harvest, the cumulative number of mite-days for <em>T. urticae</em> did not differ significantly among treatments in either year.<span> </span>Hop yields showed a significant treatment effect in 2016, with higher yield where the high rate of <em>G. occidentalis</em> was released than in other treatments, but yields did not show any significant treatment effect in 2017.<span> </span>In 2017, we also conducted an exclusion experiment at four hop yards in Ohio, to determine the services provided by predators already present in hop yards, as well as the ability of the combination of predatory mites, <em>N. fallacis</em> and <em>Neoseiulus californicus </em><span>McGregor</span><em> </em>(Acari: Phytoseiidae), to suppress <em>T. urticae </em>by augmentative releases at three different predator to prey ratios: zero to ten, one to ten, and two to ten.<span> </span>Samples were paired; one leaf was covered with a fine mesh bag and one leaf was left uncovered, in each of 50 replicates.<span> </span>After two weeks, the average number of <em>T. urticae</em> motiles on the open leaves that received zero phytoseiids was significantly less than the starting number of ten, suggesting that ambient predation is capable of suppressing <em>T. urticae</em> populations.<span> </span>The average number of <em>T. urticae</em> motiles on the enclosed leaves that received two phytoseiids was also significantly less than the starting number of ten, while the average number of <em>T. urticae</em> motiles on the enclosed leaf that received one phytoseiid was not, showing that a ratio of one phytoseiid to five <em>T. urticae</em> is effective at reducing <em>T. urticae</em> populations.<span> </span>Our experiments showed that when <em>T. urticae </em><span>is </span>found at low to moderate densities, naturally occurring predators are able to suppress their populations in Ohio hop yards.<span> </span>Augmentation using phytoseiid mites did not have a consistent beneficial effect on yields.<span> </span>Given that naturally occurring predators are important in the suppression of <em>T. urticae</em> populations, future studies thus might concentrate on conservation biological control.</p> <p> </p>
Identity and characteristics of feathers used as lining in Tree Swallow (Tachycineta bicolor) nests in Indiana and Ohio
<p><span>Nest building represents an important part of parental investment and can significantly impact reproductive success in many bird species. Tree Swallows (<em>Tachycineta bicolor</em>) are secondary cavity nesters that readily accept nest boxes and construct basic grass nest cups lined with molted feathers from other bird species. We identified and described the characteristics of the feathers used as nesting materials by Tree Swallows in 4 different habitats in Indiana and Ohio. We monitored 41 nest boxes in 2017 and 53 nest boxes in 2018. After chicks fledged, we collected feathers from nests, counted them, and characterized them by size, color, and type. Brown, medium length (5–10 cm), and contour feathers were significantly more common than other types of feathers. We compared the prevalence and characteristics of feathers in nests across different habitat types, with results showing that nests located near lakes had significantly more feathers than those in agricultural habitats. We identified which species feathers belonged to using molecular techniques and morphological comparisons and found that they belonged to 26 species from 19 families and 11 orders: Galliformes, Anseriformes, Columbiformes, Gruiformes, Charadriiformes, Pelecaniformes, Accipitriformes, Strigiformes, Piciformes, Cathartiformes, and Passeriformes, including 20 previously unreported species within those orders. Thus, feathers used as nest lining by Tree Swallows are more diverse than previously reported. Feather identities from each habitat matched avian communities in those areas, suggesting that Tree Swallows are generalist feather collectors and that the number and characteristics of feathers used as lining depends on feather availability near the nesting site. </span></p>
Data from: Fertilizer and deicer use and perceptions in SW Ohio (USA)
<p>Fertilizers and deicers are common materials for property maintenance in the Midwest, however, their application contributes to negative environmental impacts when applied incorrectly. While fertilizer use is well researched, deicer use on private properties is not. This research aims to ascertain whether patterns of fertilizer use are different from those of deicer use in Hamilton County, Ohio, and determine what factors influence a resident's decision to use these materials. Survey data were collected from 110 single-family households (38.9% response rate). Respondents are motivated by property appearance to apply fertilizers. Deicer use stems from safety concerns. Respondents were significantly more likely to consider the environmental impact of fertilizers than deicers. Respondents felt that using deicers is a more neighborly practice while using fertilizers reflects more positively on them in their neighborhood. This information can be used to develop outreach programs to reduce the environmental impacts of fertilizers and deicers.</p>
