Ecogeographical patterns of body size differ among North American paper wasp species

<p>Species with widespread distributions frequently show clines in body size across broad geographic areas. These clines may be the result of "ecogeographical rules" that describe spatial patterns of phenotypic diferences driven by environmental variation. Intraspeciic variation in body size, and the mechanisms causing this variation, have been poorly described in social wasps. This study examined ecogeographical patterns of body size for 12 native species and one non-native species of North American paper wasps (genus: Polistes) using body size measurements from &gt; 14,000 pinned museum specimens. Intraspeciic body size was correlated with latitude, elevation, and broadscale climate variation. However, the direction of this relationship was idiosyncratic across species, with Bergmann's clines and converse Bergmann's clines equally represented. There was no evidence of a phylogenetic signal in the direction of the cline between body size and the environment. Within species, the worker caste and the reproductive caste showed the same direction of response between body size and latitude, although for most species the reproductive caste was larger than the worker caste. Intraspeciic variation in body size appears to be driven by diferences in the response among species to similar environmental variables but the mechanisms causing this variation remain unknown.</p>

Data from: Queen succession conflict in the paper wasp Polistes dominula is mitigated by age-based convention

Reproduction in cooperative animal groups is often dominated by one or a few individuals, with the remaining group members relegated to non-reproductive helping roles. This reproductive skew can evolve if helpers receive fitness benefits such as potential future inheritance of the breeding position, but the mechanisms by which inheritance is determined are not well resolved. <i>Polistes</i> paper wasps form highly reproductively skewed groups and inheritance of the breeding position is likely to play a key role in the maintenance of this social structure, making them excellent models for the processes by which simple societies are maintained. Reproductive succession is thought to be determined via an age-based convention in some <i>Polistes</i> species, but there is also evidence for contest-based succession systems in which the replacement queen uses physical aggression to overpower and thereby subordinate her nestmates. Here we provide evidence that queen succession in colonies of the European paper wasp <i>Polistes dominula</i> is determined via convention rather than contest, with little disruption to the colony's social functioning. We use queen removal experiments and fine-scale behavioral analyses to confirm that age is a strong predictor of succession, and that behavioral responses to queen removal are restricted to the oldest individuals rather than being experienced equally across the group. We provide the most comprehensive and detailed experimental analysis on the dynamics of breeder succession in a cooperatively breeding invertebrate to date, thereby shedding light on the mechanisms by which animal societies are able to maintain cohesion in the face of within-group conflict.

<p>Supplementary Material for the paper "The overflowing atmosphere of WASP-121 b: High-resolution He i 10833 transmission spectroscopy with VLT/CRIRES+" by Czesla et al. (2024).</p> <p>The material is related to the 3D modeling part of the paper (Sect. 3.5), specifically focused on the atmospheric escape simulations and radiative transfer calculations for the exoplanet WASP-121 b.</p> <p>We provide the results of the 3D hydrodynamic simulation with Athena++, with key files including the input file and a snapshot of the simulation after 8 orbits.<br>Post-processing is done with a radiation transfer code located in the folder "post-process_W121b". This code, based on MacLeod &amp; Oklopcic (2022), generates synthetic spectra for two density scenarios (scaling factors 0.5 and 1.0) and has been modified for accurate calculations in high density regions. A Jupyter notebook in the same folder illustrates how to analyze the data and generate the corresponding figures.</p> <p>Detailed descriptions can be found in the README.txt file.</p>
