Soil and canopy temperature data from the Arctic LTER Moist Acidic Tussock Experimental plots (MAT89) from 2012 to 2018, Toolik Field Station, North Slope, Alaska
Soil and canopy temperature data from the Arctic LTER 1989 Moist Acidic Tussock Experimental plots(MAT89). The station was established in 1990 in block 2 of a 4 block random block design. The plots are located on a hillside near Toolik Lake, Alaska (68 38' N, 149 36'W). Treatments include - control (CT), greenhouse (GH), greenhouse plus nitrogen and phosphorus (GHNP) shade (SH), shade plus nitrogen and phosphorus (SHNP) and nitrogen and phosphorus (NP). Profiles include above and within canopy, 10, 20 and 40 centimeter soil depths. Not all treatments have a complete profile. Meteorological data was also collected but are included in a separate data set.
Soil stratigraphic data for the Toolik Lake region, North Slope of Alaska 2016-2019
Soil stratification was determined by measuring the vertical thickness of three main strata (surface acrotelm, mid-depth catotelm, and bottom mineral soil) found in organic-rich or peat soils in the Toolik Lake region, North Slope of Alaska. Additional data for each site include dominant vegetation, landscape position, glacial surface, and microtopography.
Soil hydraulic and thermal properties determined in surface organic and mineral soils in the region near Toolik Lake on the North Slope of Alaska, 2016-2019
Soil cores of 5 cm diameter down to frozen soil were taken from a subset of sample sites for laboratory analysis. Determinations of hydraulic conductivity, thermal conductivity, porosity, and bulk density were made for each core. For a further subset of sites we developed soil moisture retention curves.

Leachates of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) from permafrost soils were prepared from soils collected from the North Slope of Alaska in 2018 and 2022. Soil leachates were then either kept in the dark or exposed to light from LEDs at 305 nm (UV) and 405 nm (visible), and then inoculated with native microbial communities and incubated. At the start of the biological incubations, single replicates of the DOC after dark or light treatment and inoculation were assigned accession numbers and analyzed for 14C and 13C at the National Ocean Sciences Accelerator Mass Spectrometry (NOSAMS) facility. At the end of the biological incubations, duplicates of the dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) in those waters were assigned accession numbers and analyzed for 14C and 13C at the NOSAMS facility.

Dissolved organic carbon (DOC) was leached from permafrost soils near the Toolik Field Station in the Alaskan Arctic, either kept in the dark or exposed to light treatments, and then incubated with native permafrost microbial communities. The radiocarbon (14C) and stable carbon (13C) isotopic compositions of the initial DOC present in the dark or light-exposed permafrost soil leachates and the carbon dioxide (CO2) produced by microbial respiration of dark or light-exposed permafrost DOC were quantified.

Tiller length of Eriophorum vaginatum subjected to fertilization and simulated herbivory from 2018 until 2021. Plants were part of a fertilization experiment begun in 2006 and included four levels of nutrient addition. For the simulated herbivory experiment, plants were not clipped, clipped once in 2018, or clipped every year of the experiment.

Microbial communities in the coastal Arctic Ocean experience extreme variability in organic matter and inorganic nutrients driven by seasonal shifts in sea ice extent and freshwater inputs. Lagoons border more than half of the Beaufort Sea coast and provide important habitats for migratory fish and seabirds; yet, little is known about the planktonic food webs supporting these higher trophic levels. To investigate seasonal changes in bacterial and protistan planktonic communities, amplicon sequences of 16S and 18S rRNA genes were generated from samples collected during periods of ice-cover (April), ice break-up (June), and open water (August) from shallow lagoons along the eastern Alaska Beaufort Sea coast from 2011 through 2013. In contrast to temperate systems, Arctic lagoons that span the Alaska Beaufort Sea coast face extreme seasonality. Nine months of ice cover up to ∼1.7 m thick is followed by a spring thaw that introduces an enormous pulse of freshwater, nutrients, and organic matter into these lagoons over a relatively brief 2–3 week period. Prokaryotic communities link these subsidies to lagoon food webs through nutrient uptake, heterotrophic production, and other biogeochemical processes, but little is known about how the genomic capabilities of these communities respond to seasonal variability. This study characterizes the metabolic capabilities of microbial communities across three seasons in two lagoons and one open coastal site along the eastern Alaska Beaufort Sea coast. We used metagenomic DNA sequence data of bacterial and archaeal water column communities to identify genes of relevant biogeochemical pathways.
