Flow Direction from Land Surface - Parker and Ipswich Watersheds - ASCII Raster File
This datalayer is a gridded flow direction (i.e. river network) of the watersheds draining to Plum Island Sound. The resolution is 120 m x 120 m. This layer gives the direction of each cell to the next downstream grid cell. The gridded river network is used to explore scientific questions regarding the role of different land uses in defining nutrient loading, and the role of river systems in controlling exports to the coastal zone. Provide the flow direction of materials from source areas on land to downstream aquatic systems for general mapping and display, nutrient loading and routing analysis, and aquatic ecosystem modeling.
CoUDlabs_WP8_T811_UOS_001. Investigating geometrical effects on hydraulic energy losses during sewer to surface flow interactions during urban floods
<p>This document describes the dataset used in CO UD-labs JRA3 (WP 8) Task 8.1.1. This considers the hydraulic exchange (surcharge) from a piped drainage system to surface flood flow through a manhole. The dataset includes measurements of pressure, flow rate and depth from a physical scale model. The effect of changing the manhole lid properties on flow exchange (surcharge) and pressure in the experimental system is quantified over a range of flow rates. </p>
Less-well-developed crustal flow in the central Tibetan Plateau revealed by receiver function and surface wave joint inversion
<p>A crustal flow model has been previously used to explain the crustal extension of the Tibetan Plateau. However, the existence of massive crustal flow in the central plateau is still controversial. We conducted a joint inversion of receiver functions and surface wave dispersions from the 2-D broadband seismic array SANDWICH deployed in the central plateau. The crustal S-wave velocity structure with high vertical resolution shows a low-velocity layer (LVL) in the middle-lower crust beneath most stations. The S-wave velocity of this LVL is mostly within 3.0-3.4 km/s, reflecting a melt volume percentage (MVP) ≤ 7%, except at two stations. Our study suggests that there is not a high enough melt volume in central Tibet to develop crustal flow, which requires an MVP ≥ 7% to decrease rock strength. The formation of extensional structures in the central plateau may contribute to ductile deformation in the middle-lower crust but not crustal flow.</p>

State estimation of surface and deep flows from sparse SSH observations of geostrophic ocean turbulence using Deep Learning
<p>This is a data repository in support of the publication "State estimation of surface and deep flows from sparse SSH observations of geostrophic ocean turbulence using Deep Learning" by Manucharyan et al. (2020), Journal of Advances in Modeling Earth Systems. The zipped file contains 10-day-separated snapshots of surface and deep ocean streamfunctions from the two-layer quasigeostrophic model of ocean turbulence. The included Python scripts demonstrate the efficacy of Deep Learning in temporal interpolation and state estimation given partial observations of the surface ocean turbulence.</p> <p> </p>
Lagrangian particle dataset (2 years) for Agulhas region surface flow
<p>This is a .npz file containing the longitudes and latitudes of approximately 24,000 virtual Lagrangian particles (0.2 degree in longitude and latitude initial spacing) released on January 5, 2000 in the eastern South Atlantic Ocean and advected for 2 years. The data was used for the detection of finite-time coherent sets (Agulhas rings), see this <a href="https://github.com/OceanParcels/coherent_vortices_OPTICS">github repository</a> for the usage and this <a href="https://github.com/OceanParcels/near_surface_microplastic">github repository</a> for simulation details. Trajectories were simulated using OceanParcels (https://oceanparcels.org/), with surface currents derived from a NEMO-ORCA 006 run, available at http://opendap4gws.jasmin.ac.uk/thredds/nemo/root/catalog.html.</p>

Data from: Numerical simulation of the free surface and water inflow of a slope, considering the nonlinear flow properties of gravel layers: a case study
Groundwater is an important factor of slope stability, and ninety percent of slope failures are related to the influence of groundwater. In the past, free surface calculations and the prediction of water inflow were based on Darcy's law. However, Darcy's law for steady fluid flow is a special case of non-Darcy flow, and many types of non-Darcy flows occur in practical engineering applications. In this paper, based on the experimental results of laboratory water seepage tests, the seepage state of each soil layer in the open-pit slope of the Yanshan Iron Mine, China, were determined, and the seepage parameters were obtained. The seepage behaviour in the silt layer, fine sand layer, silty clay layer, and gravelly clay layer followed the traditional Darcy law, while the gravel layers showed clear nonlinear characteristics. The relation among the permeability, the porosity and the non-Darcy coefficient is investigated. A coupled mathematical model is established for two flow fields, on the basis of Darcy flow in the low-permeability layers and Forchheimer flow in the high-permeability layers. In addition, we considered the effect of the seepage in the slope on the transition from Darcy flow to Forchheimer flow. Then, a numerical simulation was conducted by using finite element software (LELAC 2.2). The results indicate that the free surface calculated by the Darcy-Forchheimer model is in good agreement with the in situ measurements; however, there is an evident deviation of the simulation results from the measured data when the Darcy model is used. Through a parameter sensitivity analysis of the gravel layers, we found that the height of the overflow point and the water inflow calculated by the Darcy-Forchheimer model are consistently less than those of the Darcy model, and the discrepancy between these two models increase as the permeability increases. The necessity of adopting the Darcy-Forchheimer model was explained.

Experimental and model-based investigation of the effect of the free- surface flow regime on the detection threshold of warm water inflow
<p>Experimental and numerical injections of warm water into a free surface flow. Different flow regimes were tested and detection thresholds were determined.</p> <p>Experiments were done in an outdoor flume, in June 2016. They were monitored by Fiber-Optic Distributed Temperature Sensing with a double-ended configuration and 20s time resolution. Two flume flow rates Q were tested. For each, a few injection flow rates were done, leading to a total of 10 experiments characterized by an injection ratio R. Only calibrated data are uploaded.</p> <p>Simulations were carried out on HEC-RAS 5.0, a 1D software developed by the US Army Corps of Engineers, and based on the experimental flume geometry. A total of 90 simulations were tested with different flow rates, injection percentage and thermal contrast ∆T between flowing water and injected water.</p> <p>Supplementary data can be found to understand the flume geometry, hydraulic characteristics (Reynolds, Peclet and Froude numbers) and exchanges with the atmosphere for both simulations and experiments.</p>
