Sustainable use of groundwater may dramatically reduce irrigated production of maize, soybean, and wheat

<p class="Abstract"><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span>Groundwater extraction in the United States (US) is unsustainable, making it essential to understand the impacts of limited water use on irrigated agriculture. Here, we integrate a gridded crop model with satellite observations, recharge estimates, and water survey data to assess the effects of sustainable groundwater withdrawals on US irrigated agricultural production.  Our model agrees with satellite-based estimates of evapotranspiration (R<sup>2</sup> = 0.68<b>)</b>, as well as survey production estimates from the United States Department of Agriculture (R<sup>2</sup> = 0.82 – 0.94 for county-level production and 0.37 – 0.54 for county-level yield). Using the optimistic assumption that groundwater extraction equals estimated effective aquifer recharge rate, we find that sustainable groundwater use decreases US irrigated production of maize, soybean, and winter wheat by 20%, 6%, and 25%, respectively. Using a more conservative assumption of groundwater availability, US irrigated production of maize, soybean, and winter wheat decreases by 45%, 37%, and 36%, respectively. The wide range of simulated losses is driven by considerable uncertainty in surface water and groundwater interactions, as well as accounting for adaptation and the many aspects of sustainability, including environmental flows. These results demonstrate the vulnerability of US irrigated agriculture to unsustainable groundwater pumping, highlighting the difficulty of expanding or even maintaining irrigated food production in the face of climate change, population growth, and shifting dietary demands. Our findings are based on reducing pumping by fallowing irrigated farmland, so alternate pumping reduction strategies or technological advances in crop genetics and irrigation technologies could produce different results.</span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></p>

Augmented Net Primary Production in Arctic Ocean Sustained by Increased Subarctic Inflow Water

<p>Developing an optical classification-based chlorophyll (Chla) retrieval algorithm for the Arctic Ocean by matching in situ and remote sensing data. The statistical relationship between mixed layer depth integrated primary productivity (NPP) and sea surface Chla was also regressed from a large field measurement data set. Through principal component analysis and correlation analysis, NPP environmental driving factors were analyzed. Data sets include remote sensing reflectance data used to invert NPP and environmental drivers of NPP changes.</p>

Social life cycle sustainability assessment of dried tomato products based on material and process selection through multi-criteria decision making

<h3>BACKGROUND</h3> <p>Tomatoes are a significant product of the Mediterranean region and a crucial component of the Mediterranean diet. The formulation of dried tomato products enriched with proteins and bioactive compounds could be a strategic approach to promote adherence to the Mediterranean diet. Six different novel tomato products were analyzed using different protein enrichment sources (pea proteins and leaf proteins) and drying technologies (hot-air dryer, microwave vacuum dryer, and conventional dryer). The novelty of this approach lies in combining product-specific criteria with global societal factors across their life cycles. Using 21 criteria and an analytic hierarchy process (AHP) survey of experts, the social sustainability score for each product was determined through a multi-criteria assessment.</p> <h3>RESULTS</h3> <p>The tomato product's life cycles have minimal regional impacts on unemployment, access to drinking water, sanitation, or excessive working hours. However, they affect discrimination, migrant labor, children's education, and access to hospital beds significantly. The study identified nutritional quality as the top criterion, with the most sustainable design being a tomato bar enriched with pea protein and processed using microwave vacuum drying.</p> <h3>CONCLUSION</h3> <p>The study revealed that integrating sensory and nutrient compounds into social sustainability assessments improves food sustainability and provides a practical roadmap for social life cycle assessments of food products. It emphasized the importance of considering global social issues when reformulating Mediterranean products to ensure long-term adherence to the Mediterranean diet. Overcompensation of ecosystem productivity following sustained extreme drought in a semiarid grassland

<p>Drought events are projected to be more extreme and frequent in the future and have profound influences on the structure and functions of terrestrial ecosystems. Thus, better understanding the mechanisms of recovery is critical for predicting the future dynamics of terrestrial ecosystems. We performed a seven-year field precipitation experiment to examine recovery of a grassland ecosystem from different magnitudes of sustained drought, from slight to extreme. The ecosystem was exposed to precipitation treatments in the first three years (2010-2012) and recovered during the last four years (2013-2016) without precipitation treatments. Overall, large reductions of aboveground net primary productivity (ANPP, -43.3%) and perennial forb biomass (-83.1%) were observed in the 3rd year (2012) of extreme drought only. Nevertheless, ANPP fully recovered within one year after the drought treatments were terminated, and the rapid recovery was mainly due to increased soil total nitrogen and root biomass allocation after drought. Surprisingly, large increases of ANPP under the extreme drought treatment occurred during the recovery periods from 2013-2015 (+74.1, +88.5, and +119.8 g m-2 yr-1) compared to the control. The overcompensation offset the extreme drought-induced reduction of ANPP in the treatment years and was primarily ascribed to the enhanced biomass of perennial grasses. Higher resistance to drought and fast resource acquisition strategy might drive the rapid recovery and expansion of perennial grasses. Our findings revealed the rapid recovery of grasslands and the critical role of community overcompensation in maintaining grassland ecosystem function and stability under future climate change scenarios.</p>
