APEX fen control plot soil temperatures, 2005-Present
Soil temperature measurements were recorded hourly at an array of depth at APEX alpha Fen from June 2005-Dec 2006. APEX Fen is located in the Bonanza Creek LTER outside of Fairbanks, AK. APEX Fen uses a full-factorial water table (flooded or raised, lowered or drained, and control treatments, as well as a moisture gradient) by warming manipulation (warmed, unwarmed treatment).

In the alpine tundra, shrubs modify wind distribution of snow, increasing snowpack on the leeward side of shrubs, and they provide shading, which modifies temperatures. In order to mimic these abiotic effect of shrubs, structures called connectivity modifiers, hereafter referred to as con-mods, were deployed in Black Band experiment plots in September 2018. Briefly, the Black Sand experiment was initiated in May 2018 to measure the effects of an extended growing season, by initiating earlier snow melt through the application of black sand, on plants and biogeochemistry. Together, this experimental framework allows us to ask how biotic effects influence climate exposure and ecological responsiveness.
Velocity and temperature dependence of steady-state friction of natural gouge controlled by competing healing mechanisms
<p>The empirical rate- and state-dependent friction law is widely used to explain the frictional resistance of rocks. However, the constitutive parameters vary with temperature and sliding velocity, preventing extrapolation of laboratory results to natural conditions. Here, we explain the frictional properties of natural gouge from the San Andreas Fault, Alpine Fault, and the Nankai Trough from room temperature to $\sim300^\circ$C for a wide range of slip-rates with constant constitutive parameters by invoking the competition between two healing mechanisms with different thermodynamic properties. A transition from velocity-strengthening to velocity-weakening at steady-state can be attained either by decreasing the slip-rate or by increasing temperature. Our study provides a framework to understand the physics underlying the slip-rate and state dependence of friction and the dependence of frictional properties on ambient physical conditions. </p>

The EcoTrends project was established in 2004 by Dr. Debra Peters (Jornada Basin LTER, USDA-ARS Jornada Experimental Range) and Dr. Ariel Lugo (Luquillo LTER, USDA-FS Luquillo Experimental Forest) to support the collection and analysis of long-term ecological datasets. The project is a large synthesis effort focused on improving the accessibility and use of long-term data. At present, there are ~50 state and federally funded research sites that are participating and contributing to the EcoTrends project, including all 26 Long-Term Ecological Research (LTER) sites and sites funded by the USDA Agriculture Research Service (ARS), USDA Forest Service, US Department of Energy, US Geological Survey (USGS) and numerous universities. Data from the EcoTrends project are available through an exploratory web portal (http://www.ecotrends.info). This web portal enables the continuation of data compilation and accessibility by users through an interactive web application. Ongoing data compilation is updated through both manual and automatic processing as part of the LTER Provenance Aware Synthesis Tracking Architecture (PASTA). The web portal is a collaboration between the Jornada LTER and the LTER Network Office. The following dataset from Arctic LTER (ARC) contains soil temperature at 10 cm depth (mean) measurements in celsius units and were aggregated to a monthly timescale.

Data from: Subgrain-controlled grain growth in laser melted 316L promoting strength at high temperatures
Stainless steel 316L prepared by laser melting consisted of hierarchical austenitic microstructure with micron sized (10-25 µm) grains containing fine 1µm subgrains with a cellular structure. At high temperature thermal treatments (≥ 1100 °C), merging and growth of the 1 µm subgrains into bigger subgrains restricted the rapid grain growth and microstructure coarsening. Partial phase transformation of austenite to ferrite at temperatures ≥ 1100 °C in combination with gradual and steady growth of subgrains inside the micron sized grains and nucleation of sigma phase have promoted the tensile strength of stainless steel 316L to 300 MPa at 1100 °C compared to conventionally made 316L counterparts with tensile strength of approximately 40 MPa. The grain growth mechanism of laser melted microstructure can change the application criteria for 316L and expand the application fields for 316L.

Water availability rather than temperature control soil fauna community structure and prey-predator interactions
<p>The ongoing climate change may strongly impact soil biodiversity with cascading effects on the processes they drive. Thus, it is of prime interest to improve our knowledge about responses by soil organisms such as collembolans to expected shifts in environmental conditions by considering communities comprising both detritivores and predators.</p> <p>The aim of the present study was to evaluate how simulated climate change and predation under laboratory conditions alter a collembolan community.</p> <p>To infer the impact of climate change, we applied a decreased level of soil moisture (60% <em>vs.</em> 30% soil water holding capacity) and an increasing air temperature (15 °C <em>vs. </em>25 °C) to a collembolan community constituted by four species (<em>Folsomia candida</em>, <em>Protaphorura fimata</em>, <em>Proisotoma minuta</em> and <em>Mesaphorura macrochaeta</em>) exhibiting distinct functional traits, e.g. body size and furca presence, in presence or absence of a predatory gamasid Acari (<em>Stratiolaelaps scimitus</em>) during two months in a microcosm experiment.</p> <p>We observed that decreasing soil moisture altered the collembolan community with species-specific responses. Interaction between soil moisture, temperature and predation indicates that low soil moisture reduced total collembolan abundance especially i) by suppressing the positive effect of increasing temperature and ii) by increasing the predatory control on collembolan abundance.</p> <p>These results highlight that soil moisture is the major driver of Collembola community and by consequence, a shift in climatic parameters with the ongoing climate change should strongly modify the Collembola community structure and the predator-prey interaction. Our findings are highly important since a strengthening of predation impact on Collembola prey could have major consequences on the whole soil food web being able to lead to a slowdown of key ecosystem processes they drive (e.g., litter decomposition and nutrient recycling). Finally, our study promotes the need to study more complex systems considering distinct soil-dwelling species, their functional traits and their trophic interactions to better predict the ecosystem responses to the ongoing climate change.</p>
