Plant-mediated root methane emissions and oxidation in a thermokarst bog complex in the Bonanza Creek LTER Experimental Forest VI - Raw Oxygen Injection Experiment Data 2015

Vascular plants are important in the wetland methane cycle but their effect on production, oxidation, and transport has high uncertainty, limiting our ability to predict emissions. Vegetation operated on top of baseline methane emissions, which varied with proximity to the thawing permafrost margin. Emissions from vegetated plots increased over the season, resulting in cumulative seasonal methane emissions that were 4.1-5.2 g m-2 season-1 greater than unvegetated plots. Mass balance calculations signify these greater emissions were due to increased methane production (3.0-3.5 g m-2 season-1) and decreased methane oxidation (1.1-1.6 g m-2 season-1). Minimal oxidation occurred along the plant-transport pathway and oxidation was suppressed outside the plant pathway. Our data indicate suppression of methane oxidation was stimulated by root exudates fueling competition among microbes for electron acceptors. Root exudates are known to fuel methane production and our work provides evidence they also decrease methane oxidation. This dataset contains mo monthly 2015 oxygen decay rates from unmanipulated conditions as well as in plots where vascular vegetation was removed.

Anoxic Incubation and Priming Experiment in a Permafrost and Thermokarst Peatland in Lutose, Alberta, Canada

<p>The dataset presents anaerobic SOC mineralization results through incubations (CO2 and CH4 production rates) from a permafrost peat plateau and two adjacent thermokarst bogs which thawed ~30 (Young Thermokarst bog) and ~200 (Mature Thermokarst bog) years ago. Peat was incubated from 15 depths of ⁓6 m cores at 4 and 15&deg;C for 714 days, followed by a priming experiment to assess the potential role of labile plant inputs on SOC mineralization.</p>

Patterns and drivers of prokaryotic communities in thermokarst lake water across Northern Hemisphere

<p><span><strong>Aim</strong>:</span><span> The formation of thermokarst lakes could make a large amount of carbon accessible to microbial degradation, potentially intensifying the permafrost carbon-climate feedback via carbon dioxide/methane emissions. Because of their diverse functional roles, prokaryotes play a key role in mediating biogeochemical cycles in thermokarst lakes. However, little is known about the large-scale patterns and drivers of these communities.</span></p> <p><span><strong>Location</strong>:</span><span> Permafrost regions in the Northern Hemisphere.</span></p> <p><span><strong>Time</strong> <strong>Period</strong>:</span><span> Present day.</span></p> <p><span><strong>Major taxa studied</strong>:</span><span> Prokaryotes.</span></p> <p><span><strong>Methods</strong>:</span><span> Based on a combination of large-scale measurements on the Tibetan Plateau and data syntheses in pan-Arctic regions, we constructed a comprehensive dataset of 16S rRNA sequences from 258 thermokarst lakes across Northern Hemisphere permafrost regions. We also used the local contributions to beta diversity (LCBD) to characterize the variance of prokaryotic species composition and screened underlying drivers by conducting a random forest modeling analysis.</span></p> <p><span><strong>Results</strong>:</span><span> Prokaryotes in thermokarst lake water were dominated by the orders Burkholderiales, Micrococcales, Flavobacteriales, </span><span>and Frankiales. The relative abundance of dominant taxa</span><span> was positively associated with dissolved organic matter (DOM) properties, especially for the chromophoric/aromatic compounds. Microbial structure differed between high-altitude and high-latitude thermokarst lakes, with the dominance of <em>Flavobacterium</em> in high-altitude lakes, and the enrichment of <em>Polynucleobacter</em> in high-latitude lakes. More importantly, climatic variables were among the main drivers shaping the large-scale variation of prokaryotic communities. Specifically, mean annual precipitation was the best predictor for prokaryotic beta diversity across the Northern Hemisphere, as well as in the high-altitude permafrost regions, while mean annual air temperature played a key role in the high-latitude thermokarst lakes.</span></p> <p><span><strong>Main</strong> <strong>conclusions</strong>:</span><span> Our findings demonstrate significant associations between dominant taxa and DOM properties, as well as the important role of climatic factors in affecting prokaryotic communities. These findings suggest that climatic change may alter DOM conditions and induce dynamics in prokaryotic communities of thermokarst lake water in the Northern Hemisphere.</span></p>

Permafrost soil database with information on site, topography, geomorphology, hydrology, soil stratigraphy, soil carbon, ground ice isotopes, and vegetation at thermokarst features near Toolik and Noatak River, 2009-2013

This database contains soil and permafrost stratigraphy associated with thermokarst features near Toolik Lake and the Noatak River collected by Torre Jorgenson and Andrew Balser during summers 2009-2011. The Access Database has main data tables (tbl_) for site (environmental), soil stratigraphy, soil physical data, soil chemical data, soil isotopes (ground ice), soil radiocarbon dates, topography and bathymetry, and vegetation cover. The site data includes information of location, observers, geomorphology, topography, hydrology, soil summary characteristics, pH and EC, soil classification, and vegetation cover by species. Soil stratigrapy has information on soil texture and ground ice. Soil physical and chemical data includes lab data on bulk density, moisture, carbon, and nitrogen. The database has 37 reference tables (REF_) that have codes and descriptions for variables used in site, soil stratigraphy, and vegetation cover tables.

Surface soil characteristics for six thermokarst chronosequences near Toolik Field Station and Noatak National Preserve, Alaska

Surface organic and mineral soil layers were sampled in retrogressive thaw slump disturbance scars and nearby undisturbed tundra to estmate the influence of this thermo-erosional--thermokarst--disturbance type on soil carbon (C) and nitrogen (N) pools. Within six independent sites, we identified multiple thaw slump scars and determined time after disturbance for each scar by (1) aging the population of tall deciduous shrubs rooted in the mineral soil and (2) by dating the basal layer of the re-accumulating soil organic matter. Within each scar or paired undisturbed tundra site, we sampled replicate soil profiles volumetrically and analyzed samples for horizon depth, coarse, fine and rock fractional contribution, pH, bulk density, moisture content, and C and N concentration.

Martian Thermokarst: South Arcadia Planitia and the Southern Mid-Latitudes

<p>This data supplements the results presented in Viola &amp; McEwen (2018), Journal of Geophysical Research: Planets, <a href="http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/2017JE005366/full">doi:10.1002/2017JE005366</a>.</p> <p>The GIS databases presented here describe the presence of thermokarstic features (expanded craters and scalloped depressions) and pedestal craters&nbsp;found in images from the High Resolution Imaging Science Experiment (HiRISE) on the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter (MRO) within two study regions: southern Arcadia Planitia (25&ndash;40&deg;N, 180&ndash;240&deg;E) and the southern mid-latitude band (30&ndash;60&deg;S). These features suggest the presence of near-surface&nbsp;excess ice on Mars.</p>

ABoVE: Methane Flux across Two Thermokarst Lake Ecosystems, Interior Alaska, 2018

This dataset provides diffusive methane (CH4) fluxes collected from two thermokarst lakes in the Goldstream Valley, north of Fairbanks in interior Alaska. Fluxes were collected from the littoral zones, adjacent shoreline, and upland vegetation. The data were collected during July 2018. Measurements were made using a mobile, closed chamber technique where chamber air was recirculated through a Los Gatos Research (LGR) Ultraportable Cavity Ring-down Spectrometer. The chamber was large enough to enclose emergent and upland vegetation up to 1.5 m in height, allowing plant-facilitated fluxes to be measured. These in situ measurements were used to verify spatial patterns in methane flux (i.e., exponential decay with distance from water) detected by NASA's Next Generation Airborne Visible/Infrared Imaging Spectrometer (AVIRIS-NG).

Thermokarst lakes on the Tibetan Plateau from 1990 to 2022

<p>Recent climate warming has accelerated the permafrost thaw and dynamics of thermokarst lakes (TLs) on the Tibetan Plateau. Using the global surface water product, we compiled an inventory of TLs with areas ranging from 1-300 ha, and categorized them as unchanging, expanding, emerging, shrinking and vanishing. Based on time-series remote sensing imagery, we identified the primary occurrence year of lake changes from 1990 to 2022. Also, this dataset includes information on the topographic and permafrost characteristics of TLs.</p>
