Dataset from publication "Predicting context-sensitive urban green space quality to support urban green infrastructure planning"

<p><strong>Data Description:</strong></p><p>This dataset presents the spatial outcome of an analysis modelling perceived green space quality across the city of Espoo, Finland. The analysis relies on data gathered through the My Espoo on the Map survey (<i>Mun Espoo kartalla</i>) in the autumn of 2020 as part of the NordForsk-funded research project NORDGREEN. A comprehensive account of the analytical process and potential applications of the dataset is available in the associated publication, "<i>Predicting context-sensitive urban green space quality to support urban green infrastructure planning</i>" (open access: <a href="https://doi.org/10.1016/j.landurbplan.2023.104952">https://doi.org/10.1016/j.landurbplan.2023.104952</a>).</p><p><strong>Data Processing:</strong></p><p>This dataset results from an analysis that integrates both primary and secondary sources of geospatial data. The primary data were collected with an online public participation GIS (PPGIS) survey directed for the adult inhabitants of Espoo. The data collection took place in September-October 2020 and was executed in collaboration with Aalto University and the City of Espoo. Data from: neglected puzzle pieces of urban green infrastructure: richness, cover, and composition of insect-pollinated plants in traffic-related green spaces

<p>Insect-pollinated vascular plants in spontaneous vegetation provide essential ecosystem services and benefit wildlife. However, floral communities associated with traffic-related green spaces are rarely considered valuable elements of urban green infrastructure (UGI). The dataset contains information on species-based floral communities of vascular insect-pollinated plants in traffic-related green spaces in three highly populated Finnish cities. Those are Helsinki (665 558 inhabitants), Tampere (244 029 inhabitants), and Turku (175 645 inhabitants). Data were collected during the mean flowering phenophase of vascular plants in July-August 2022 from two types of locations: (i) urban (city centers) and (ii) suburban (city outskirts), and from three types of traffic-related green spaces: (i) traffic islands, (ii) parking lots, (iii) road verges. The dataset contains information for the 93 vascular insect-pollinated plant species flowering during the survey. Sampling campaign was conducted in 90 sampling sites, and the dataset contains information on the location coordinates. In addition, the dataset possesses information on the amount of garbage pieces (cigarette filters, plastic boxes, or scraps) revealed for each sampling point in traffic-related green spaces.</p>

How does the selection of National Development Zones affect urban green innovation?

<p><span><span>The launch of the selection process for National Development Zones (NDZs) marked a fundamental change in the construction of development zones, making it an essential position for local authorities to implement high-quality development. Based on the data of prefecture-level cities in China from 2000 to 2018, this paper examines the impact and mechanism of selecting NDZs on urban green innovation through a double-difference spatial durbin model using the selection of NDZs as a "quasi-natural experiment". The study finds that the selection of NDZs can promote green innovation in cities and has a significant window-radiating effect. The heterogeneity test results show that the implementation of the selection policy for development zones in non-old industrial cities, large and medium-sized cities, cities with easy access to transportation, and cities with high market orientation are more likely to promote urban green innovation. At the same time, the higher the level of government governance and the better the level of economic development of the development zones, the more it helps to realize the effects of the selection policy. Assessing Urban Green Space Accessibility in Amsterdam

<p>This is dataset is an ArcGIS Pro project was used to calculate walking distance from buildings to Urban Green Spaces (UGS) within the municipality of Amsterdam. This was made as part of an MSc Earth Sciences thesis aimed at assessing UGS and heat exposure in Amsterdam. The thesis is based on the idea that UGS function as cool spaces within the urban heat island of the city, and thus provides lower temperatures to urban residents, specifically during hot summer months, therefore reducing the risk of heat stress and heat-related illnesses and morbidity.</p>

Data from: Concrete survivors: The herpetofauna of an urban green area over 100 years of increasing urbanization

<p><span>The goal of our study was to evaluate changes in the assemblage of reptiles in an urban habitat over 100 years of increasing urbanization, aiming to identify which ecological attributes allowed the persistence of species that can be found in the area today. To accomplish that, we accessed historical records in two important scientific collections for the study area and carried out fieldwork to access the current reptile assemblage in an urban green area, in São Paulo, Brazil. The dataset presented here is the result of all individuals collected in the study area between 1908 and 2019, including also the animals collected by the authors during the fieldwork carried out in 2016 and preserved in the collection. </span></p>

From green to red: Urban heat stress drives leaf color evolution

<p><span>Urban environments, occupying approximately 1% of total land area, often impose novel biotic and abiotic selective pressures on organisms and provide valuable opportunities to understand the eco-evolutionary dynamics between nature and human societies. Prevalence of impervious surface and resulting higher temperatures in urban areas, known as urban heat islands, comprises prominent characteristics in global cities. However, it is not known whether and how urban plants adapt to such heat stress. This study focused on <em>Oxalis</em> <em>corniculata</em>, which has intraspecific polymorphism in leaf color (green, red), and examined whether the leaf color variation is associated with urban heat stress. Field observations revealed consistent associations between leaf color and habitat types (green vs. urban) at local (&lt; 500m), landscape (&lt; 50km), and global scales. Green-leaved plants were dominant in green habitats, and red-leaved individuals had increased in number in urban habitats. Growth and photosynthesis experiments indicated the adaptive benefit and cost of red/green leaves associated with heat stresses. Red-leaved individuals had higher growth rates and photosynthetic efficiency under heat stress, while green-leaved individuals displayed higher growth rates and photosynthetic efficiency under non-stressful conditions. Genome-wide SNP analysis suggests that the red leaf trait may have evolved multiple times from the ancestral green leaf, rather than spreading from a single origin of red leaf evolution. Overall, the results suggested that the dominance of red leaves of <em>O. corniculata</em> seen in cities worldwide would be evidence of plant adaptative evolution due to urban heat islands.</span></p>
