Data from: Development of a sustainability assessment algorithm and its validation using case studies on cryogenic machining
This work presents a comprehensive structure for evaluating the sustainability of machining processes. Industries can contribute towards developing a sustainable future by using algorithms that evaluate the sustainability of their processes. Inspired by the literature, the proposed model involves a set of metrics that are critical in evaluating the impact of a process on society, environment, and economy. The flexibility of this model allows decision-makers to use the available responses to identify the most favorable process. The entropy weight method was suggested for objectively calculating the weights of each indicator. A multi-criteria decision-making method i.e., Technique for Order Preference based on Similarity to Ideal Solution (TOPSIS), was used to rank processes in the decreasing order of their sustainability. The proposed algorithm was successfully validated with case studies from the published literature. A MATLAB code was also created so that industries may expeditiously apply this method to evaluate the sustainability of machining processes.

Monitoring mobility in older adults using a global positioning system (GPS) smartwatch and accelerometer: A validation study
<p><strong>Background</strong></p> <p>There is interest in identifying the most reliable method for detecting early mobility limitations. Accelerometry and Global Positioning System (GPS) could provide insight into declines in mobility, but few studies have used this multi-sensor approach to monitor mobility in older adults. </p> <p><strong>Methods</strong></p> <p>Thirty-two volunteers (66.2±6.3 years) agreed to participate in our validation study. We conducted two experiments to determine the validity of the TicWatch S2 and Pro 3 Ultra GPS models against the Qstarz receiver in measuring life-space mobility, trip frequency, duration, and mode. We also assessed the accuracy of the TicWatch in measuring step count and agreement with the ActiGraph wGT3X-BT for activity counts and sedentary behavior. Participants wore devices simultaneously for three consecutive days and recorded activity and trip information.</p> <p><strong><span>Results</span></strong></p> <p>The TicWatch Pro 3 Ultra GPS performed better than the S2 model and was similar to the Qstarz in all tested trip-related measures, and it was able to estimate both passive and active trip modes. Both models showed similar results to the Qstarz in life-space-related measures. The TicWatch S2 demonstrated good to excellent overall agreement with the ActiGraph algorithms for the time spent in sedentary and non-sedentary activities, with 84% and 87% agreement rates, respectively. Under supervised conditions, the TicWatch Pro 3 Ultra GPS measured step count consistently with the gold standard observer, with a bias of 0.4 steps. The thigh-worn ActiGraph algorithm accurately classified sitting and lying postures (97%) and standing postures (90%).</p> <p><strong>Conclusion</strong></p> <p>Our multi-sensor approach to monitoring mobility has the potential to capture both accelerometer-derived movement data and trip/life-space data only available through GPS. In this study, we found that the TicWatch models are valid devices for capturing GPS and raw accelerometer data, making them useful tools for assessing real-world mobility in older adults and advancing our knowledge of early mobility decline.</p>

Measurement of Social Strain in People with Dementia: A Pre-liminary Study of the Reliability and Validity of the Negative Relationship Quality Questionnaire in Indonesia
<p>People<strong> </strong>with dementia (PWD) may exhibit symptoms that negatively affect their relationships with their families or friends which could cause social strain. The Negative Relationship Quality (NRQ) questionnaire can be used to measure social strain in PWD. There has never been an Indonesian adaptation of the NRQ. This preliminary study aimed to measure the validity and reliability of the NRQ among PWD in Indonesia (NRQ-INA). This study used a cross-sectional design. Forward–backward translation methods were conducted first. Pearson’s correlation and factor analysis were employed for the validity test. Cronbach’s alpha and test–retest were used to determine reliability. The NRQ-INA has four parallel items related to social strain that are divided into three subscales and asked to spouse/partner, family members, and friends, leading to a total of 12 questions. The results of validity testing from 60 respondents showed that all items in the NRQ-INA were strongly valid with correlation coefficients (<em>r</em>) of >0.8 (<em>p</em><0.01). Factor analysis showed a convergence with the variance explained of more than 50% for all items in each subscale, which also indicated that NRQ-INA had acceptable construct validity to measure social strain. Cronbach’s alpha values (α) were 0.926, 0.942, and 0.938 for the subscales of spouse, friends, and family members, respectively. The correlations of test–retest reliability for all items were >0.7 (<em>p</em><0.01), demonstrating a reliable NRQ-INA measurement. In conclusion, NRQ-INA had a good validity and reliability to measure social strain in PWD. Further study of the concurrent validity among PWD is still needed.</p>

A cross sectional study on adaptation and initial validation of a test to evaluate health claims among high school students – Croatian version
<p>Objectives: We validated the Croatian version of the test using multiple-choice questions (MCQs) from the Claim Evaluation Tools item bank of the Informed Health Choices project, and measured the ability of high school students to appraise health claims.</p> <p>Setting: 16 high schools from the urban agglomeration of the city of Split, Croatia.</p> <p>Participants: Final year high school students of at least 18 years of age.</p> <p>Interventions: 18 MCQs from the item bank considered relevant for high school students were translated. After face-validity testing, the questionnaire was piloted and sent to a convenient sample of 302 high school students.</p> <p>Primary and secondary outcome measures: Difficulty and discrimination indices were calculated for each MCQ to determine the validity of translation and the weight of MCQs. We assessed basic metric characteristics and performed initial validation of the test. Two tests were created, the full (18 MCQs) and the short version (12 MCQs). We analysed differences in test score according to gender and school.</p> <p>Results: The response rate was 96% (75% female respondents). Metric characteristics of both tests were satisfactory (Cronbach α=0.71 for the full and α=0.73 for the short version). The mean score (± standard deviation) for the full version was 11.15±3.43 and 8.13±2.76 for the short version. There were 6 easy and 12 moderately difficult questions. Questions concerning effectiveness and dissimilar comparison groups were answered correctly by fewer than 40% of students. Female students and those from grammar and health schools scored higher on both tests.</p> <p>Conclusions: Both tests showed good metric characteristics and may be used for quick and reliable assessments of adolescents' ability to appraise health claims. They may be used to identify needs and inform development of educational activities to foster critical thinking about health among adolescents</p>
Data from: Validating marine Devonian biogeography: a study in bioregionalization
<p>The Devonian record presents an opportunity to test and validate an existing marine bioregionalisation. This study is the first to use comparative biogeography and phylogenetic data to test Devonian bioregionalisation. Proposed in the 1960's the Old World, Eastern Americas, and Malvinokaffric realms have been the functional standard within marine Devonian Biogeography. Data from 32 published phylogenies of Devonian marine taxa and a database of c.800 occurrences were analysed using phylogenetic software to test for area monophyly. The taxic occurrences within the current database were then tested against total fauna Devonian occurrences with the Palaeobiology Database to indicate differences in sampling. Results indicate that the current Devonian bioregionalisation is not representative of natural areas and requires revision. The result highlights areas that are most robust from which the study makes recommendations to improve the process and diagnosis of Devonian biogeographic areas. We found that legacy issues within palaeontology are evident within the results and their interpretation. The validation of bioregionalisation and process is critical to the advancement of biogeography and palaeontology. The sensitivity of bioregionalisation shows biotic and geographical relationships, how life and earth evolved together, and how geographic bias is evident in scientific process.</p>
Development and validation of the Health Belief Model questionnaire to promote smoking cessation for nasopharyngeal cancer prevention: a cross-sectional study
<p>Objective: Nasopharyngeal cancer (NPC) risk factors caused by lifestyle choices are substantial yet avoidable. Using the Health Belief Model as a conceptual framework, this study develops and validates a questionnaire to predict smokers' intentions to quit in Sarawak, Malaysia (HBM).</p> <p>Design: A cross sectional study.</p> <p>Setting: Urban and suburban areas in Sarawak, Malaysia.</p> <p>Participants: Following a thorough literature study, the preliminary items for the instrument were created. Prior to beginning the content validity by a panel of 10 experts, the instrument was translated into the Malay language utilising the forward-backwards approach. 10 smokers carried out face validity in both quantitative and qualitative ways. Exploratory factor analysis (EFA) and confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) were used to assess the instrument's concept validity. Phase 1 of the EFA involved 100 smokers, whereas phase 2 of the CFA involved 171 smokers. Cronbach's alpha coefficients were used to measure internal consistency and assess reliability.</p> <p>Results: The factor loading of each item remained within the acceptable threshold in the exploratory stage. The final revised CFA yielded the following model fit indices that suitably fitted the seven-factor model: Chi Square: 641.705; df= 500; P< 0.001; CFI = 0.953; TLI: 0.948; RMSEA= 0.041. With the exception of one pairwise construct, satisfactory convergent validity and divergent validity were demonstrated. Phases 1 and 2 both have Cronbach's alpha values over 0.7, suggesting acceptable internal reliability.</p> <p>Conclusions: The study confirmed the validity and reliability of the instrument in predicting smokers' tendency to adopt healthy behaviour of smoking cessation to lower risk of developing cancer. The instrument consists of 34 items, dividing into two sections: 6 HBM components and health behavioural intention. The instrument is regarded as innovation and can be applicable in other smoking-related malignancies in different susceptible populations and geographical locations.</p>
