Multi-survey data collection on Finnish household waste sorting and recycling
<p>This dataset consists of surveys that have been marked with letters from A to L.</p> <ul> <li>Surveys A, B, D, E, F, G, H, I, K and L have at least one questionnaire. Each questionnaire, presented with questions in both Finnish and English, has its results displayed in the dataset table. Dataset tables haven't been translated, they are in Finnish.</li> <li>Survey C is an interview based study. Questions have been translated into English, but the interview data is in Finnish only.</li> <li>Survey J is an experiment on how to target communication in social media. The dataset shows how many times each post has been watched, which hastags were used etc.</li> </ul> <p>The work was carried out by groups of students as part of the Sustainable Product Development Project course in November-December 2023. All the surveys are interconnected in one way or another with the promotion of household waste sorting and recycling, as the topic of the assignment came from HAMK Smart research group's KOTILO project (Participatory Design of Source Separation in Recycling). For more information, go to hamk.fi/kotilo</p> <p>Each survey is licensed under CC BY 4.0 Attribution 4.0 International for the respective group of students, the names of the students are at the beginning of each dataset.</p>

Data from: Mapping phosphorus hotspots in Sydney's organic wastes: a spatially-explicit inventory to facilitate urban phosphorus recycling
Phosphorus is an essential element for food production whose main global sources are becoming scarce and expensive. Furthermore, losses of phosphorus throughout the food production chain can also cause serious aquatic pollution. Recycling urban organic waste resources high in phosphorus could simultaneously address scarcity concerns for agricultural producers who reply on phosphorus fertilisers, and waste managers seeking to divert waste from landfills to decrease environmental burdens. Recycling phosphorus back to agricultural lands however requires careful logistical planning to maximize benefits and minimize costs including, processing and transportation. The first step towards such analyses is quantifying recycling potential in a spatially-explicit way. Here we present such inventories and scenarios for the Greater Sydney Basin's recyclable phosphorus supply and agricultural demand. In 2011, there was fifteen times more phosphorus available in organic waste than agricultural demand for phosphorus in Sydney. Hypothetically, if future city residents shifted to a plant-based diet, eliminated edible food waste, and removed animal production in the Greater Sydney Basin, available phosphorus supply would decrease to 7.25 kt of phosphorus per year, even when accounting for population growth by 2031, and demand would also decrease to 0.40 kt of phosphorus per year. Creating a circular phosphorus economy for Sydney, in all scenarios considered, would require effective recycling strategies which include transport outside of the Greater Sydney Basin. These spatially explicit scenarios can be used as a tool to facilitate stakeholders engagement to identify opportunities and barriers for appropriate organic waste recycling strategies.
A 2018 Social Accounting Matrix for Germany depicting waste and recycling accounts for a circular economy
<p>The 2018 SAM for Germany comprises of 160 accounts including 63 activities, 85 commodities, margins, labor, capital, household, government, social contributions, taxes on products, activity tax, direct tax, stock change, savings and investment and the rest of the world. It is entirely based on data from the Federal Statistical Office of Germany (Destatis), which guarantees the highest possible degree of data-consistency. Because the initial version of the SAM (Proto-SAM) has imbalances in the government, savings and investment and the rest of the world accounts, a balanced SAM is estimated using the cross-entropy method. To ensure the consistency of the data through the estimation process, macro totals are enforced as controls for total imports, total value-added, total private consumption, total government consumption and total exports.</p>
