On the layered structure and Seasonal Variation of the Water Exchanges in the Sulawesi Sea Areas as well as the associated dynamics
<p><span>The layered structure and seasonal variation of the water exchanges in the Sulawesi Sea areas, as well as the corresponding dynamics, are investigated using HYCOM data. A net inward water mass transport is identified in the upper and intermediate layers in the Sulawesi Sea and it is compensated by the net outward transport in the deep layer. As an important source of this net inward transport, </span><span>the</span><span> southward flow through </span><span>the </span><span>Sibutu Passage (denoted hereafter as Sibutu Flow) reaches 5.06Sv in winter, accounting for ~43% of the net inflow. However, it </span><span>decreases substantially</span><span> to 1.79Sv in summer</span><span>,</span><span> accounting for only 12% of the inflow. Further analysis reveals that </span><span>this</span><span> Sibutu Flow modulates the seasonal variation of the corresponding outward flow at the Makassar Strait, the major exit of the water mass in the Sulawesi Sea. In winter, the enhancement of the Sibutu Flow associated with the greater intrusion of Kuroshio water into the Luzon Strait</span> <span>produces a stronger eastward pressure gradient force, suppressing the surface intrusion of the Mindanao Current. Conversely, this pressure gradient force weakens and shifts westward in summer, permitting a larger water intrusion from the eastern section. Given that the outward Makassar Flow</span><span> is the main passage of </span><span>the Indonesian Throughflow (ITF), our study highlights the essential role of the Sibutu Flow in modulating seasonal variabilities of the ITF via the Makassar Strait and, thus, the transfer of water masses and heat content between the Pacific and Indian Oceans.</span></p>

Water level elevation data for monitoring wells and surface water gages at the Colorado State University Mountain Campus, 2019 – 2023
<p>This dataset contains groundwater and surface water levels measured between 2019 and 2023 at the Colorado State University Mountain Campus. The study site is situated within a formerly glaciated valley traversed by a modern perennial stream, the South Fork Cache la Poudre River, and occurs near the subalpine-montane ecosystem transition at an approximate elevation of 2,750 meters above sea level. Water levels were measured at two transects (the upstream and downstream transects). Each transect includes a surface water gage, two shallow hand-augered monitoring wells on the valley floor within the riparian zone, and a deeper water table observation well located on the adjacent terrace. Water levels were measured at a subhourly frequency using a combination of vented and non-vented pressure transducers. All data from non-vented transducers were corrected for barometric pressure fluctuations.</p>

SCAMS/Nimbus-6 Level 2 Water Vapor and Temperature, as well as Antenna and Brightness Temperature V001 (SCAMSN6L2) at GES DISC
The Nimbus-6 Scanning Microwave Spectrometer (SCAMS) Level 2 data product contains water vapor and temperature profiles, as well as antenna and brightness temperatures. SCAMS was designed to map tropospheric temperature profiles, water vapor abundance, and cloud water content to be used for weather prediction even in the presence of clouds, which block conventional satellite infrared sensors. The data, originally written on IBM 360 machines, were recovered from 9-track magnetic tapes. The data are archived in their original IBM 32-bit word binary record format, also referred to as a binary TAP file, and contain one orbit of measurements. The SCAMS experiment on Nimbus-6 is a follow on to the successful Nimbus-5 NEMS experiment. SCAMS continuously monitored emitted microwave radiation at frequencies of 22.235, 31.65, 52.85, 53.85 and 55.45 GHz. The three channels near the 5.0-mm oxygen absorption band were used primarily to deduce atmospheric temperature profiles. The two channels near 10 mm permitted water vapor and cloud water content over calm oceans to be estimated separately. The instrument, a Dicke-superheterodyne type, scanned +/- 45 degrees normal to the orbital plane with a 10 degree field of view. The three oxygen channels shared common signal and reference antennas. Both water vapor channels had their own signals and reference antennas. The absolute rms accuracy of the oxygen channels was better than 2 Kelvin and that of the water vapor channels better than 1 Kelvin. The SCAMS Principal Investigator was Prof. David H. Staelin from MIT. The Nimbus-6 SCAMS data are available from June 15, 1975 (day of year 166) through May 31, 1976 (day of year 152).This product was previously available from the NSSDC with the identifier ESAD-00093 (old ID 75-052A-10A).

Water level response in wells to dynamic shaking in confining unconsolidated sediments: a laboratory study
<p class="15"><span>This article focuses on laboratory experiments designed to investigate the influence of dynamic shaking on water level fluctuation in wells of unconsolidated sediments. A large flume filled with natural sandy sediments was subjected to horizontal dynamic loading at different frequencies (0.5-15Hz) and accelerations (0.1g, 0.15g, 0.25g and 0.5g), generated by a shaking table. Thus, the change in characteristics of the water and saturated sediments were investigated, including how water level and hydraulic properties changed over time, are of significant interest. A range of water level changes following the oscillating pore pressure for hydrostatic and hydrodynamic (flowing) conditions were observed: oscillation, step-rise, step-rise with oscillation, and step-drop with oscillation, similar to those observed in nature after earthquakes. We find that water level declines occur when the imposed frequency is less than 2Hz, while the acceleration has weak correlation on the water level change when it is less than 0.5g. Sinusoidal wave propagation reduces hydraulic conductivity first sharply which then stabilizes at a constant value with a slight increase. Heterogeneous consolidation, mechanical resonance, compaction, dilation, and re-packing of the grain structure may constitute a physically plausible mechanism for water level fluctuations and hydraulic parameters adjustment.
