Model data created by MANDIFORE using ED2 simulating structure and biomass under harvest legacies and climate change as the Morton Arboretum, IL, USA, 2007-2099"
The data in this archive was used to investigate the long-term impacts of harvest-based management strategies on structure and resistance to climate-induced biomass loss using a process-based ecosystem model and an ensemble of climate change drivers in a midwestern USA hardwood forest. The model used was a modified version of the Ecosystem Demography model version 2.1 (ED2) where trees could be grouped based on plant functional type and size allowing for different management regimes to be simulated. The simulation site was an actively managed mid-continental North American temperate deciduous forest at The Morton Arboretum (TMA) near Chicago, USA. The initial conditions (composition and structure) of the forest simulated were initialized using field survey data from 487, 8.92-m radius plots collected in 2018. Different levels of tree removal based on traditional forestry management techniques for temperate deciduous forests were simulated and evaluated for their effects on forest structure and resistance to drought induced mortality for the period of 2006 to 2100. Model initialization and spin up occurred from 2006-2020 at which point management was simulated for the period of 2020-2024 before running without management for 2024 to 2100. Fourteen CMIP5 GCMs were used for meteorological drivers for 2006 to 2100 for both RCP4.5 and RCP 8.5 warming scenarios. CO2 concentration was held constant at 380 ppm over the simulation period. Four management regimes were simulated for each of these GCM-RCP pairings leading to a total of 112 distinct model runs. The four management regimes were group selection, shelterwood, understory thinning and an additional no management scenario served as a control. Data in this archived is separated into the 112 distinct model runs.
Michigan Rodents Distribution at the University of Michigan Biological Station, Pellston, MI, from 1883 to 2007
Distribution of rodents in northern Michigan documented by Dr. Phil Myers, et al. We use museum and other collection records to document large and extraordinarily rapid changes in the ranges and relative abundance of 9 species of mammals in the northern Great Lakes region (white-footed mice, woodland deer mice, southern red-backed voles, woodland jumping mice, eastern chipmunks, least chipmunks, southern flying squirrels, northern flying squirrels, common opossums). These species reach either the southern or the northern limit of their distributions in this region. Changes consistently reflect increases in species of primarily southern distribution (white-footed mice, eastern chipmunks, southern flying squirrels, common opossums) and declines by northern species (woodland deer mice, southern red-backed voles, woodland jumping mice, least chipmunks, northern flying squirrels). White-footed mice and southern flying squirrels have extended their ranges over 225 km since 1980, and at particularly well-studied sites in Michigan's Upper Peninsula, small mammal assemblages have shifted from numerical domination by northern species to domination by southern species. Repeated re-sampling at some sites suggests that southern species are replacing northern ones rather than simply being added to the fauna. Observed changes are consistent with predictions from climatic warming but not with predictions based on recovery from logging or changes in human populations. Because of the abundance of these focal species (the 8 rodent species make up 96.5% of capture records of all forest-dwelling rodents in the region and 70% of capture records of all forest-dwelling small mammals) and the dominating ecological roles they play, these changes substantially affect the composition and structure of forest communities. They also provide an unusually clear example of change that is likely to be the result of climatic warming in communities that are experienced by large numbers of people.
Grazing and microhabitat interact to affect plant-plant interactions in subtropical seasonal wetlands, 2007-2008
The stress gradient hypothesis predicts that competition will be important in productive environments while facilitation will be common in environments with high stress or consumer pressure. However, abiotic stress and grazing may vary independently and even occur simultaneously. Here we examine the outcome of plant interactions in grazed wetlands where consumer pressure and abiotic stress occur concurrently. We hypothesized that cattle grazing and microhabitat would alter the outcome of plant interactions. Given that wetland edges are drier and less productive than wetland centers we expected that facilitation would be greatest in drier wetland edges due to greater abiotic stress regardless of cattle presence. We conducted an experiment for two growing seasons in ten wetlands, five exposed to cattle grazing and five fenced. Two wetland obligate plants were included (Panicum hemitomon and Alternanthera philoxeroides), and plots were assigned to three treatments 1) all neighbors removed, 2) all neighbors removed except Juncus effusus, a dominant, unpalatable plant, 3) all neighbors intact (control), in both wetland centers and edges. Differences in survival, change in height and number of leaves were assessed. In ungrazed wetlands, plant survival was higher in wetland edges vs. centers, while it did not differ in grazed wetlands. Survival in wetland edges was further increased by the presence of J. effusus. Positive interactions under grazed conditions were clear when plant height was assessed, but negative interactions affected leaf production in both ungrazed and grazed wetlands. Grazing interacts with wetland microhabitat to alter plant survival. Facilitative interactions on plant height were apparent in grazed wetlands. Understanding how plant interactions change under different biotic and abiotic contexts is important for informing ecosystem restoration and management.

Characterization of burned and unburned moist acidic tundra soils for estimating C and N loss from the 2007 Anaktuvuk River Fire, sampled in 2008.
This file contains the soil profile data for burned and unburned moist acidic tundra sites used to estimate C and N loss from the Anaktuvuk River Fire (2007). These sites were sampled in summer of 2008. Unburned sites were used to develop a method for estimating soil organic layer depth and plant biomass, and for determining the characteristics of unburned soil organic layers. In burned sites, we characterized residual organic soils and used biometric measurements of tussocks to reconstruct pre-fire soil organic layer depth. Together, these measurements were used to reconstruct pre-fire soil and plant carbon and nitrogen pools and estimate ecosystem losses of these elements during the fire.

Air temperature, relitive humidity, barometric pressure, net radiation, and precipitation were recorded every half hour at the APEX alpha Fen. APEX Fen is located in the Bonanza Creek LTER outside of Fairbanks, AK. APEX Fen uses a full-factorial water table (flooded or raised, lowered or drained, and control treatments, as well as a moisture gradient) by warming manipulation (warmed, unwarmed treatment).

In this study we used geostatistics to characterize the spatial heterogeneity of soil carbon and nitrogen pools, microbial respiration, microbial biomass, nitrogen mineralization, soil moisture, soil pH, depth of organic horizon and forest floor covers and understory vegetation abundances in three sites (1999, 1987 and 1920 wildfires) of a boreal forest chronosequence of Interior Alaska (near Delta Junction). Soil sampling and vegetation measurements occured during summer 2007.

Eight Mile Lake Research Watershed, Carbon in Permafrost Experimental Heating Research (CiPEHR): Dissolved Organic Carbon 2007-2017
The Carbon in Permafrost Experimental Heating Research (CiPEHR) project addresses the following questions: 1) Does ecosystem warming cause a net release of C from the ecosystem to the atmosphere?, 2) Does the decomposition of old C, that comprises the bulk of the soil C pool, influence ecosystem C loss?, and 3) How do winter and summer warming alone, and in combination, affect ecosystem C exchange? We are answering these questions using a combination of field and laboratory experiments to measure ecosystem carbon balance and radiocarbon isotope ratios at a warming experiment located in an upland tundra field site near Healy, Alaska in the foothills of the Alaska Range. How have dissolved organic carbon concentrations and radiocarbon ages changed over interannual and seasonal time? How do DOC concentrations correlate with environmental variables, such as precipitation, thaw depth, water table depth, and soil temperatures? This dataset contains dissolved organic carbon (DOC) concentrations and radiocarbon values from streams draining a permafrost research site at Eight Mile Lake, AK. Several sampling years include multiple annual sampling dates, while other years include only one sampling date. Not every location was sampled every year, and not every parameter was measured every year. The dataset will continue into 2017 but whether it will be maintained after that year is unknown.
The effects of land-use history and the contemporary landscape on non-native plant invasion at local and regional scales in the French Broad Watersheds, 2007
Determining what factors explain the distribution of non-native invasive plants that can spread in forest-dominated landscapes could advance understanding of the invasion process and identify forest areas most susceptible to invasion. The researchers conducted roadside surveys to determine the presence and abundance of 15 non-native plant species known to invade forests in western North Carolina, USA. Prior to sampling, the researchers identified 15 non-native invasive plant species that were of concern in the study region. Generalized linear models were used to examine how contemporary and historic land use, landscape context, and topography influenced presence and abundance of the species at local and regional scales.
Forest Inventory of a Northern Hardwood Forest: Watershed 6 2007, Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest
Forest inventory surveys were initiated in 1965, repeated in 1977, and repeated at 5 year intervals after that; this data set was collected in summer of 2007. The inventory consists of a total inventory of all trees >=10 cm diameter-at-breast-height (dbh) on the whole of the watershed (13.23 ha), as measured in each of the 208 25 m x 25 m plots. Trees >=2 to <=10 cm dbh were subsampled using a 3 meter wide strip along one edge of each 25 m x 25 m plot. With the addition of tree tags in 2002 on all trees >=10 cm dbh, tracking of individual trees is now possible. These data were gathered as part of the Hubbard Brook Ecosystem Study (HBES). The HBES is a collaborative effort at the Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest, which is operated and maintained by the USDA Forest Service, Northern Research Station.
McMurdo Dry Valleys LTER: Stoichiometry Experiment in Taylor Valley, Antarctica from 2007 to 2016
Soil communities in the McMurdo Dry Valleys are subject to many limitations, including resource limitations. However, the nutrients that are predominantly limiting to growth and diversity of soil biota are not known. Additionally, landscape history (N deposition, P weathering) and native N and P content (glacial till provenance) may influence the ability of soil communities to respond to nutrient additions or changes in nutrient availability associated with environmental change. Long-term experiments in the Bonney and Fryxell basins have been established with yearly application of aqueous nutrient additions: C, N, P, CN, and CP. Multiple nutrients additions were made at the Redfield Ratio of 106:16:1 (C:N:P). Responses of soil chemistry, CO2 flux, and biota are reported.

Microscope-based phytoplankton community composition for Green Lake 4, 2000 - 2007.
These data represent phytoplankton community composition in Green Lake 4 observed during bi-weekly sampling events following ice-off during the 2000-2007 field seasons. Samples were collected from the deepest part of the lake using a Van Dorn sampler from depths of 0, 3, and 9 m. Samples from the inlet and outlet are grab samples. Phytoplankton samples were preserved in 1% Lugol’s solution. Cell counts for each taxonomic group were conducted using an inverted microscope with 1000x magnification. Taxonomic resolution was based on the imaging capabilities of the instrument and varies based on the size and distinguishing characteristics of the cells in a given taxonomic group.
