Eddy covariance data measured at the CAP LTER flux tower located in the west Phoenix, AZ neighborhood of Maryvale from 2011-12-16 through 2012-12-31

The CAP LTER maintains a flux tower to facilitate neighborhood-scale investigations of atmospheric processes in a Phoenix, AZ suburb. Capitalizing on comprehensive measurements of energy (heat and radiation) and matter (water and carbon dioxide) exchanges between the atmosphere and the urban surface, this project adds significantly to research investigating how urbanization affects local weather, climate, and air quality. An antenna-mounted array of sophisticated sensors measuring temperature, humidity, and wind speed and direction at high temporal resolutions facilitates the calculation of energy and material fluxes. The residential setting where the tower is positioned was selected on account of the homogeneous building design (single-story, single-family, detached dwellings) representative of many neighborhoods throughout the greater Phoenix metropolitan area. To avoid the influence of localized turbulence and material fluxes created by anomalous surface objects, the antenna extends vertically approximately 75 ft to sample neighborhood-scale fluxes. This dataset contains 30-minute post-processed eddy covariance data measured at the CAP LTER tower located in the west Phoenix neighborhood of Maryvale from Dec 16 2011 to Dec 31 2012.

Land use and land cover (LULC) classification of the CAP LTER study area using 2010 Landsat imagery

The land use and land cover (LULC) mapping generated from the 30 meter resolution Landsat TM5 is prepared for CAP LTER analyses. The series of products includes three levels LULC classifications, from coarser land-cover types to finer, hybrid LULC types, arranged in three thematic maps with contrasting numbers of LULC categories: (1) 12, (2) 15, and (3) 21. The percent of vegetation cover (vegetation fraction) in the residential area is provided. The image has a resampled spatial resolution of 15 meters due to the image classification procedure.

CAP LTER land cover classification using 2010 National Agriculture Imagery Program (NAIP) Imagery

Detailed land-cover mapping is essential for a range of research issues addressed by sustainability science at large, and increasingly for questions posed of urban areas, such as those of the Central Arizona-Phoenix Long-Term Ecological Research (CAP LTER). This project provides the first fine-resolution land-cover mapping of the CAP LTER using 2010 NAIP four-band data. It demonstrates a new object-based method capable of delivering robust outputs for the range of research activities not only undertaken by the program of study but for such studies that appear to be emerging worldwide. The classification process incorporates cadastral GIS data to assist the land-cover type extraction at the parcel scale, and a hierarchical network approach that balances computation time with classification accuracy. Decision rules that may prove useful for other high resolution image classification in other arid-land metropolitan areas are provided.

Aquarius CAP Level 2 Sea Surface Salinity, Wind Speed & Direction Data V5.0

The version 5.0 Aquarius CAP Level 2 product contains the fourth release of the AQUARIUS/SAC-D orbital/swath data based on the Combined Active Passive (CAP) algorithm. CAP is a P.I. produced dataset developed and provided by JPL. This Level 2 dataset contains sea surface salinity (SSS), wind speed and wind direction data derived from 3 different radiometers and the onboard scatterometer. The CAP algorithm simultaneously retrieves the salinity, wind speed and direction by minimizing the sum of squared differences between model and observations. The main improvements in CAP V5.0 relative to the previous version include: updates to the Geophysical Model Functions to 4th order harmonics with the inclusion of sea surface temperature (SST) and stability at air-sea interface effects; use of the Canadian Meteorological Center (CMC) SST product as the new source ancillary sea surface temperature data in place of NOAA OI SST. Each L2 data file covers one 98 minute orbit. The Aquarius instrument is onboard the AQUARIUS/SAC-D satellite, a collaborative effort between NASA and the Argentinian Space Agency Comision Nacional de Actividades Espaciales (CONAE). The instrument consists of three radiometers in push broom alignment at incidence angles of 29, 38, and 46 degrees incidence angles relative to the shadow side of the orbit. Footprints for the beams are: 76 km (along-track) x 94 km (cross-track), 84 km x 120 km and 96km x 156 km, yielding a total cross-track swath of 370 km. The radiometers measure brightness temperature at 1.413 GHz in their respective horizontal and vertical polarizations (TH and TV). A scatterometer operating at 1.26 GHz measures ocean backscatter in each footprint that is used for surface roughness corrections in the estimation of salinity. The scatterometer has an approximate 390km swath.

Aquarius CAP Level 3 Wind Speed Standard Mapped Image Monthly Data V5.0

Version 5.0 Aquarius CAP Level 3 products are the fourth release of the AQUARIUS/SAC-D mapped salinity and wind speed data based on the Combined Active Passive (CAP) algorithm. ECCO Ocean 3D Gent-Mcwilliams, Redi, and Background Vertical Diffusivity Coefficients for the Lat-Lon-Cap 90 (llc90) Native Model Grid (Version 4 Release 4)

This dataset provides 3D coefficients for the Gent-McWilliams and Redi parameterizations and background vertical diffusivity on the lat-lon-cap 90 (llc90) native model grid from the ECCO Version 4 Release 4 (V4r4) ocean and sea-ice state estimate. Each of these three time-invariant, spatially-varying terms are estimated during the ECCO V4r4 optimization. Estimating the Circulation and Climate of the Ocean (ECCO) state estimates are dynamically and kinematically-consistent reconstructions of the three-dimensional, time-evolving ocean, sea-ice, and surface atmospheric states. ECCO V4r4 is a free-running solution of a global, nominally 1-degree configuration of the MIT general circulation model (MITgcm) that has been fit to observations in a least-squares sense. Observational data constraints used in V4r4 include sea surface height (SSH) from satellite altimeters [ERS-1/2, TOPEX/Poseidon, GFO, ENVISAT, Jason-1,2,3, CryoSat-2, and SARAL/AltiKa]; sea surface temperature (SST) from satellite radiometers [AVHRR], sea surface salinity (SSS) from the Aquarius satellite radiometer/scatterometer, ocean bottom pressure (OBP) from the GRACE satellite gravimeter; sea ice concentration from satellite radiometers [SSM/I and SSMIS], and in-situ ocean temperature and salinity measured with conductivity-temperature-depth (CTD) sensors and expendable bathythermographs (XBTs) from several programs [e.g., WOCE, GO-SHIP, Argo, and others] and platforms [e.g., research vessels, gliders, moorings, ice-tethered profilers, and instrumented pinnipeds]. V4r4 covers the period 1992-01-01T12:00:00 to 2018-01-01T00:00:00.
