Soil C, N, P, and Frankia nifD-K RFLP genotypes distribution from Alnus tenuifolia nodules in early and late succession 2005
This dataset contains genetic characterizations of Frankia inhabiting Alnus tenuifolia nodules in early and late succession sites in the Bonanza Creek Experimental Forest (BCEF). Characterizations were done using PCR-RFLP on the nifD-K spacer region of the Frankia genome. The position of each plant and each nodule were mapped in order to examine spatial patterns in Frankia distribution within sites. Soil chemistry data, including C, N, P, and pH, were also collected from mineral and organic layers.

Hourly Mean Radiant Temperature Distribution on a summer day (2012-06-27) in the greater Phoenix, Arizona (USA) metropolitan area
This dataset is a collection of 1-m resolution mean radiant temperature (Tmrt) rasters generated using digital surface models and the Solar and longwave environmental irradiance geometry (SOLWEIG) model. The dataset provides hourly Tmrt in the Phoenix, Arizona (USA) metropolitan area for a typical summer day (June 27, 2012, peak air temperature of 41 degrees C) from 07:00 hrs to 20:00 hrs (local time (America/Phoenix)). The dataset can serve as a guide for heat mitigation programs within the area and as input for heat exposure studies.
Size fractionation for total Chl a within the surface layer and calculated size distribution of total Chl a from discrete bottle samples collected during CCE LTER process cruises in the CCE region, 2006 - 2024 (ongoing).
Water for size fractionation of chlorophyll a is sampled from ~10m depth (surface layer) in the CCE study area. The size distribution of total chlorophyll a is determined by filtering water though filters of differing pore sizes. These are then extracted in acetone and analyzed fluorometrically with Turner Designs 10-AU Fluorometer on CCE Process cruises (since 2006, ongoing). Chlorophyll a and taxon-specific pigments (chlorophylls and carotenoids) are qualitatively and quantitatively characterized in the lab onshore by several size fractions (< 1µm to > 20µm) utilizing High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) analysis. The samples analyzed within the CCE region are used to develop a metric for phytoplankton community structure that can be used to monitor its state and changes thereof over time.
Distribution models of microbial mats and mosses across Fryxell Basin, Taylor Valley, Antarctica (2018-2019)
Long-term ecological field surveys from the McMurdo Dry Valleys Long Term Ecological Research program (MCM LTER) have documented the abundance and diversity of microbial mat types across ephemeral glacial meltwater streams in the McMurdo Dry Valleys region of Antarctica. However, field surveys are limited and are incapable of being performed across the entirety of streams within a field season. Therefore, we used remote sensing to examine the distribution of these diverse communities across streams in order to determine whether large scale distribution patterns are similar to those the MCM LTER has already thoroughly studied in situ. As part of our 2018-2019 field campaign, we established two to three 20 x 20 m plots within five different streams (Bowles Creek, McKnight Creek, a relict channel, Canada Stream, and Crescent Stream) in the Fryxell Basin of Taylor Valley. We performed point transect and quadrat field surveys of microbial mat and moss cover within each 20 x 20 m plot. We then used hyperspectral measurements of mat and moss collected in the field, previously archived in “Spectral and biological characteristics of microbial mats and mosses across Fryxell Basin, Taylor Valley, Antarctica (2018-2019),” in linear spectral mixing models to determine mat and moss coverage in the same 20 x 20 m plots within an atmospherically corrected WorldView-2 satellite image from Dec. 12, 2018. We ground truthed our modeled mat and moss abundances with our field survey coverages and determined the limitations of our methods. We then modeled mat and moss coverage across Huey Creek and Von Guerard Stream to apply our methods to streams without ground truthing measurements. Our results demonstrate the spatial distribution of moss and black, orange, red, and green microbial mat across Fryxell Basin streams. Observations of mat and moss coverage at the basin-wide scale are similar to those seen in localized stream areas.
Spatially Distributed Lake Mendota EXO Multi-Parameter Sonde Measurements 2019-2022
This data was collected over 34 sampling trips during four summers (May-October), 2019-2022. 35 grid boxes were generated over Lake Mendota. Before each sampling effort, sample point locations were randomized within each grid box. Surface measurements were taken with an EXO multi-parameter sonde at a subset of the 35 grid boxes throughout Lake Mendota during each sampling trip. Measurements include temperature, conductivity, chlorophyll, phycocyanin, turbidity, dissolved organic material, ODO, pH, and pressure.
SBC LTER: Beach: Distribution of terrestrial organic material in intertidal and nearshore marine sediment due to debris flow response efforts
These data describe the distribution and processing of terrestrial organic material observed in the Santa Barbara Channel (Goleta Bay) during the spring of 2018. Specifically, beach, slough, and marine sediments were sampled during and after the debris disposal event that took place between January and February 2018 following the Thomas Fire and the subsequent Montecito Debris Flow. Data are contained in one table, including organic carbon, carbon isotope, lignin phenol, and pyrogenic carbon measurements analyzed from sediment cores collected at different depths and locations in the nearshore region.
