<p>The Jewish periodicals in Serbia from different aspects provide general and factual information on the history, culture, religion and the national and political preferences of a nation that lived in a small country with a rough history, due to certain geopolitical circumstances. Unfortunately, they also bear from within a harsh reality of the immense and inconceivable tragedy of the Holocaust. Fortunately, the tragedy did not mean the complete end of everything, so even nowadays, one can periodically hear the voice that was supposed to be silenced, as a renewed hope and faith in the life and survival of the Jewish community in Serbia. These 76 titles contain historical narratives relating to the destiny of both individual people and whole Jewish communities in various towns and regions of Serbia then and now.</p>

Data from: Inter-colony variation in foraging flight characteristics of black-headed gulls Chroicocephalus ridibundus during the incubating period

Using GPS-loggers, we examined the influence of colony, sex, and bird identity on foraging flight characteristics of black-headed gulls <i>Chroicocephalus ridibundus </i>during the incubation period. We studied tracks of 36 individuals breeding in one urban and two rural colonies in Poland. Birds from both rural colonies performed the furthest flights (mean 8-12 km, up to 27 km) foraging mainly in agricultural areas. Gulls from the urban colony performed shorter flights (median 5 km, up to 17 km) visiting mainly urbanized areas and water bodies. We found that females performed longer flights and their flights parameters were less repeatable compared to males. Males from both rural colonies visited water bodies more frequently than females. In all colonies males (but not females) used habitats unproportionally to their availability in the vicinity. Relatively low inter-individual and relatively high intra-individual overlap in home ranges indicated considerable foraging site fidelity. Individuals specialized in the use of particular type of habitat performed shorter foraging flights compared to individuals using diverse habitats during their foraging flights. Our results indicate diverse foraging strategies of black-headed gulls, including generalists that explore various habitats and specialists characterized by high foraging site and habitat fidelity.

The global critical frequency foEs data derived from the FORMOSAT-3/COSMIC S4max for the period 2006 to 2014

<p>The ionospheric sporadic E (Es) layer has a significant impact on the Global Positioning System (GPS)/Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) signals. These influences on the GPS/GNSS signals can also be used to study the occurrence and characteristics of the Es layer on a global scale. In this paper, 5.8 million radio occultation (RO) profiles from the FORMOSAT-3/COSMIC satellite mission and ground-based observations of Es layers recorded by 25 ionospheric monitoring stations and held at the UK Solar System Data Centre at the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory and the Chinese Meridian Project were used to derive the hourly Es critical frequency (f<sub>o</sub>Es) data. The global distribution of f<sub>o</sub>Es with a high spatial resolution shows a strong seasonal variation in f<sub>o</sub>Es with a summer maximum exceeding 4.0 MHz and a winter minimum between 2.0–2.5 MHz. The GPS/GNSS RO technique is an important tool that can provide global estimates of Es layers, augmenting the limited coverage and low frequency detection threshold of ground-based instruments. Attention should be paid to small f<sub>o</sub>Es values from ionosondes near the instrumental detection limits corresponding to minimum frequencies in the range 1.28–1.60 MHz.</p>

Data from: Too salty for you? Changes of diet in the laughing gull nestlings during the growing period

<p>In many seabird and waterbird species, salinity can impose physiological stress on recently hatched chicks because they have a limited capacity to excrete salt loads. In response, parents can select low-salt food for their nestlings in the first stage of their growth. We determined the growth-related variation in the diet of laughing gull <i>Leucophaeus atricilla</i> nestlings by using stable isotope analysis of feathers. Isotopic measurement of <span>hatchling</span> down reflects the mother's diet before laying eggs. At the same time, the primary feather tip indicates the food intake during the initiation of feather growth (one week of age), and the primary feather base indicates the food provided by parents during the period immediately before fledging. δ<sup>15</sup>N and δ<sup>13</sup>C values among the feather types showed a spatiotemporal shift in the nestlings' diet. Younger chicks consumed more terrestrial prey sources (<span>weevil beetles </span><i><span>Sphenophorus</span></i> sp.<span>; </span>~51%) than chicks at fledging (~2%). However, fledging chicks and females before egg-laying consumed mostly marine prey sources (Pacific white shrimp <i>Litopenaeus vannamei</i> and anchovy <i>Anchoa </i>sp<i>.</i>; &gt; 90%). The base and primary tip portions had similar δ<sup>15</sup>N values, but both sections were less enriched than the hatchling down. This change was diet-related, as the nestlings showed a lower percentage of anchovy consumption (13.3 <i>–</i> 14.7%) compared to females before egg-laying (30.4%). Younger chicks had a different spatial niche than fledglings and females before egg-laying, indicating a diet shift through the chick growth period. Assuming that the availability of food in the terrestrial or marine foraging areas did not vary through the nestlings' growth period (five weeks), our findings support food resource selectivity by parents for their offspring during the first days of life, to reduce the physiological stress caused by high salt loads.</p>

Spatiophylogenetic modelling of extinction risk reveals evolutionary distinctiveness and brief flowering period as threats in a hotspot plant genus

Comparative models used to predict species threat status can help to identify diagnostic features of species at risk. Such models often combine variables measured at the species level with spatial variables, causing multiple statistical challenges, including phylogenetic and spatial non-independence. We present a novel Bayesian approach for modelling threat status that simultaneously deals with both forms of non-independence and estimates their relative contribution, and we apply the approach to modelling threat status in the Australian plant genus Hakea. We find that after phylogenetic and spatial effects are accounted for, species with greater evolutionary distinctiveness and a shorter annual flowering period are more likely to be threatened. The model allows us to combine information on evolutionary history, species biology, and spatial data, to calculate latent extinction risk (potential for non-threatened species to become threatened), estimate the most important drivers of risk for individual species, and map spatial patterns in the effects of different predictors on extinction risk. This could be of value for proactive conservation decision-making based on the early identification of species and regions of potential conservation concern.

Seasonal isotopic niche of a rodent: High between-individual variation but no changes in individual niche width during the rich-resource period

<p>The dynamics of trophic niche width in animals at both population- and individual-level is potentially influenced by temporal variation of food resources, by between-individual differences in food-resource rank preferences<span class="fontstyle01"><span>, and also by competition</span></span>. Using stable isotope of carbon and nitrogen (<i>δ</i><sup>13</sup>C and <i>δ</i><sup>15</sup>N) of fecal samples, we investigated the trophic niche dynamics and individual variation in food-resource use by the arboreal rat <i>Rhipidomys macrurus</i>, in the highly seasonal Brazilian savanna (Cerrado). We tested the hypothesis that dietary niche expansion during the rich-resource period (wet season) occurs via individual specialization and consequently lower individual niche overlap in contrast with niche retraction during the low-resource period (dry season) via increase in niche overlap and expansion of individual niches. The results indicated that <i>R</i>.<i> macrurus</i> is primarily frugivorous and presents a wider isotopic niche in the rich-resource period in comparison to the low-resource period. The increase in niche width was achieved by individual specialization (decrease in niche overlap), as expected. During the low-resource period, however, individual niche widths were not wider than during the rich-resource period. Additionally, individual body condition was lower in the wet season than in the dry season, suggesting higher competition in this period. We conclude that an increase in the population niche may involve only between-individual variation and not necessarily requiring changes in individual niche width. We propose that the combination of ecological opportunity (high resource diversity) in addition to a greater competition in the warm-wet season leads to expansion of the population trophic niche width via individual specialization. </p>

Data from: Periodic shell decollation as an ecology-driven strategy in the early Cambrian Cupitheca

<p>Shell decollation is a growth strategy that has been adopted by a number of invertebrate taxa to offset the metabolic and ecological disadvantages of shell growth. However, little is known about the origin and evolution of this process. We here describe well-preserved specimens of the hyolith, <i>Cupitheca decollata</i> sp. nov., preserving the decollation process from the early Cambrian Yu'anshan Formation (ca. 518 million years ago) of South China. Based on a large number of specimens collectively representing different developmental stages, we use high-resolution X-ray microtomography and scanning electronic microscopy to reconstruct the process of decollation in this taxon. <i>Cupitheca</i> is among the earliest known small shelly fossils, and thus our discovery confirmed that periodic decollation had evolved by the onset of the Cambrian explosion, reflecting the high intensity of the predator-prey arms race in early Cambrian ecosystems. A comparison between the decollation processes of <i>Cupitheca</i> and other shelly invertebrates suggests that periodic decollation and the associated molecular mechanisms of calcium dissolution, uptake, allocation, and deposition may have had multiple independent origins.Shell decollation is a growth strategy that has been adopted by a number of invertebrate taxa to offset the metabolic and ecological disadvantages of shell growth.
