Data from: A Silurian ophiuroid with soft tissue preservation

<p>Palaeozoic brittle stars are not equipped with the fused arm ossicles (vertebrae) that facilitate the remarkable mode of walking that characterizes living forms. Here we describe a stem ophiuroid from the Herefordshire Lagerstätte (Silurian, Wenlock Series) which is remarkable in preserving the body cavity uncompacted and long tube feet which lack suckers. We tentatively assign the specimen to Protaster. The morphology of the arms and attitude of the specimen suggest that locomotion was achieved by arm propulsion combined with podial walking. The ophiuroid was also capable of different types of feeding strategies. This protasterid ophiuroid increases the diversity of echinoderm higher taxa with preserved soft parts represented in the Herefordshire Lagerstätte.</p>

The first Silurian trilobite with three-dimensionally preserved soft parts reveals novel appendage morphology

<p>The first Silurian trilobite known with soft parts preserved, a <i>Dalmanites</i> species, is described from the Herefordshire Lagerstätte. Biramous appendages and much of the alimentary system are evident.  High-fidelity three-dimensional preservation reveals a novel, double arrangement of the exopod filaments, interconnected by a presumed membranous sheet. This morphology explains a misinterpretation of the exopod as supporting spiral structures, originally reported nearly 150 years ago. The new exopod morphology is considered primarily respiratory in function and comparison with other trilobite limbs suggests that it may be unique to Phacopida.</p>

Phylogeny of the Ordovician and Silurian members of the order Atrypida

<p><span>The brachiopod order Atrypida originated in the Middle Ordovician and went extinct in the Late Devonian. Few cladistic studies have been undertaken for this group. Here we investigate their early evolution through the Silurian time. We present a parsimony-based phylogenetic analysis of 41 characters and 70 genera representing all the early taxonomic groups within the order. The stratigraphic record of the fossil genera analysed here strongly supports the parsimony phylogeny. Most currently recognized subfamilies and families may be identified within clades, except for the Atrypinae, Idiospirinae, and the Septatrypidae. This warrants subdivision of the former and redefinition of the two latter. The subfamily Atrypinae is redefined and a new subfamily of the Atrypidae, the Protatrypinae is split off. Tracing character evolution across the tree indicates that calcified spiralia and a jugum or jugal processes characterize all members of the Atrypida, except the most basal clade, the Cyclospiridae, that lacks a calcified jugum. Ribs are a homoplasious character, occurring in numerous clades throughout the tree. Darriwillian through Sandbian was a time with rapid evolution when most new autapomorphies seen in the atrypides evolved. This interval is part of the Great Ordovician Biodiversification Event (GOBE). Solid teeth, dorsal direction of spiralia, elaborate ornamentation, and frills evolved in the latest Katian into early Silurian time. Solid teeth and dorsally directed spiralia, seen in distantly related clades from the latest Katian on, may be analogous features. The Late Ordovician Mass Extinction (LOME) is indicated in the stratigraphic tree together with a possible event at the end of Aeronian. The tree supports the long-held assumptions that the Plectatrypinae evolved from the Spirigerininae. It further suggests that the genus <em>Tuvaella</em> is included with the Davidsonioidea. Likewise, the redefined Atrypinae is a sister group of the Lissatrypidae and a derived group in the phylogenetic tree. </span></p>

Data from: A vicissicaudatan arthropod from the Silurian Herefordshire Lagerstätte, UK

<p><span>A new arthropod, <em>Carimersa</em> <em>neptuni</em> gen. et sp. nov., is described from the Silurian (Wenlock Series) Herefordshire Konservat-Lagerstätte, UK. The head bears pedunculate eyes and five pairs of appendages. Triflagellate antennae are followed by two pairs of uniramous limbs each with an endopod bearing a pronounced gnathobasic basipod. The posterior two pairs of head limbs and all trunk limbs bear an endopod, exopod and filamentous exite. The trunk consists of ten appendage-bearing segments followed by an apodous abdomen of four segments. The arthropod resolves as sister taxon to <em>Kodymirus</em> and <em>Eozetetes</em> + Aglaspidida. It is the first representative of Vicissicaudata reported from the Herefordshire Lagerstätte and the first Silurian example with well preserved appendages. The preservation of a cluster of radiolarians apparently captured by the trunk appendages is the first direct association of predator and prey discovered in the Herefordshire fauna and suggests that <em>Carimersa</em> was a nektobenthic form that used its gnathobasic basipods in microdurophagy. </span></p>
