Spatial and thermal blanding's turtle data

<p>Declining reptilian populations have been a growing concern over the last couple of decades. One such declining species of concern, the Blanding's turtle (<em>Emydoidea blandingii</em>), occurs as isolated populations in North American prairie-wetlands and is at risk of extirpation due to habitat loss and fragmentation, and increased predator (e.g. racoons, coyotes) populations due to supplemented resources in urban environments. To help mitigate declining populations, wildlife managers have invested in the conservation of this species through head-starting (i.e. reared in ex-situ) and juvenile release programs to augment wild Blanding's turtle populations. However, much of their spatial and winter/thermal ecology is understudied, and data for juveniles, and juveniles reared in ex-situ is especially scarce, yet this information is imperative to understanding shortfalls and improving head-starting efforts in the future. In spring 2016 (RR<sub>2016</sub>) and 2017 (RR<sub>2017</sub>) we released a cohort (n=12 each year) of head-started juvenile Blanding's turtles equipped with radio transmitters and temperature dataloggers into a prairie-wetland in the greater Chicago region, North America. Using ground-based radio telemetry, we determined seasonal movement areas (SMAs; spring, summer, and fall) and annual home ranges (AHRs) for both RR<sub>2016</sub> and RR<sub>2017</sub> cohorts via Kernel Density (KD) estimates. We also investigated the thermal characteristics of overwintering for both juvenile cohorts. We found that SMAs for the RR<sub>2016</sub> cohort, but not for the RR<sub>2017</sub> cohort, significantly differed across seasons for most SMA estimators. We also found that juveniles in both cohorts not only survived overwintering but also displayed similar overwintering phenology (i.e. initiation: October-November; termination: April) and temperature variation as Blanding's turtles adults in other studies. Overall, our results indicate that head-started juvenile Blanding's turtles may be able to acclimatize quickly to their natural environment post-release. Our study provides evidence of the efficacy of well-developed head-starting programs that aim to augment and preserve imperiled turtle populations.</p>

Data for: Spatial monitoring of flying insects over a Swedish lake using a CW lidar system

<p>Data for a field experiment on remote sensing of flying insects are supplied. A bistatic CW lidar system of the Scheimpflug type was employed, and echoes from flying insects over and close to a Swedish lake were recorded as read-out files from an array detector making observations along the emitted laser beam. The activated pixels of the detector could be converted into range data by triangulation. With a high detector read-out frequency, data on numerous insects could be obtained. Special emphasis was put on distinguishing between large and small insects (from the intensities of the recorded echoes) and the insect positions with regard to the shores of the lake. </p>

Data from: Direct generation of spatially entangled qudits using quantum nonlinear holography - variances

<p>Nonlinear holography shapes the amplitude and phase of generated new harmonics using nonlinear processes. Classical nonlinear holography influenced many fields in optics, from information storage, de-multiplexing of spatial information and all-optical control of accelerating beams. Here, we extend the concept of nonlinear holography to the quantum regime. We directly shape the spatial quantum correlations of entangled photon pairs in two-dimensional patterned nonlinear photonic crystals using spontaneous parametric down conversion, without any pump shaping. The generated signal-idler pair obeys a parity conservation law that is governed by the nonlinear crystal. Furthermore, the quantum states exhibit quantum correlations and violate the Clauser-Horne-Shimony-Holt inequality, thus enabling entanglement-based quantum key distribution. Our demonstration paves the way for controllable on-chip quantum optics schemes utilizing the high-dimensional spatial degree of freedom.</p>

Data for: A spatially explicit trait-based approach uncovers changes in assembly processes under warming

<p><span>The re-assembly of plant communities during climate warming depends on several concurrent processes. Here we present a novel framework that integrates spatially explicit sampling, plant trait information and a warming experiment to quantify shifts in these assembly processes. By accounting for spatial distance between individuals, our framework allows separation of potential signals of environmental filtering from those of different types of competition. When applied to an elevational transplant experiment in the French Alps, we found common signals of environmental filtering and competition in all communities. Signals of environmental filtering were generally stronger in alpine than in subalpine control communities, and warming reduced this filter. Competition signals depended on treatments and traits: Symmetrical competition was dominant in control and warmed alpine communities, while hierarchical competition was present in subalpine communities. Our study highlights how distance dependent frameworks can contribute to a better understanding of transient re-assembly dynamics during environmental change.</span></p>

Data from: Monitoring temporal and spatial trends of illegal and legal fishing in Canada's marine conservation areas using vessel tracking datasets

<p>Expansion of marine conservation areas (CA) necessitates resource-efficient and achievable strategies for monitoring and evaluation of ongoing fishing activity at national levels. To demonstrate and explore such a strategy, we conducted the first extensive analysis of fishing activity within Canada's static, geographically defined marine CAs with fishing regulations (n = 264 areas). We used eight years of Automatic Identification System data to estimate fishing effort across three oceans and conducted temporal and spatial comparisons specific to each CA's regulations and enactment date. We addressed questions on CA effectiveness, fishing displacement, fishing the line behavior, and relationships between fishing activity and spatial CA attributes. We estimated 22,000 hours of fishing activity within CAs after enactments, 22% of which was identified as illegal. CA effectiveness appeared to be lowest for Atlantic CAs based on illegal fishing effort density within CAs. Fishing displacement and fishing the line was generally not apparent as buffer areas around CAs tended to already have higher fishing effort prior to enactments. CA effectiveness and responses to CAs varied considerably, as was visualized using timeseries plots and maps developed for each CA. Our evaluation of a nation's full suite of CAs provides managers with a foundation and approach for continued monitoring and reporting.</p>

Data from: Drought-induced relocation of ant colonies and its consequences for the long-term spatial ecology of a population under stress

<ol> <li>Maintaining a central refuge such as a nest or burrow can offer protection against environmental stressors but comes at the expense of the capacity to disperse to new locations. This trade-off with mobility can be detrimental when environmental conditions become adverse for extended periods, necessitating animals to relocate in order to track shifting niche envelopes.</li> <li>Long-lived ant colonies that invest in the construction of large nests are especially susceptible to changing environmental conditions. The Australian meat ant, <em>Iridomyrmex</em> <em>purpureus</em>, build large terrestrial nests at sites that balance shade and solar exposure.</li> <li>Long-term study of a population of meat ants showed low nest turnover and a stable spatial distribution of nests across typical rainfall years. With the onset of drought, a dramatic surge in the production of new nests occurred through a process of budding that far exceeded historic trends. This appears to have allowed colonies to relocate nests into areas with more favourable microclimate conditions in a strategy reminiscent of the production of runners in stressed plants. The consequence has also been the packing of nests into a narrow habitable zone that has resulted in an apparent increase in competition among large rival colonies. Following the break in drought and the thinning of some nests through abandonment, competition has progressively eased in later years.</li> <li>The surge in nest budding triggered by acute environmental stress in this population offers a possible strategy for long-lived colonies to effectively migrate across the landscape. With changes in environmental conditions becoming more frequent and severe with the climate crisis, any strategy available to central place foragers to track windows of preferred conditions are likely to become increasingly important.</li> </ol>

Data from: Testing concordance and conflict in spatial replication of landscape genetics inferences

<p class="MsoNormal">The degree to which landscape genetics findings can be extrapolated to different areas of a species range is poorly understood. Here, we used a broadly distributed ectothermic lizard (<em>Sceloporus occidentalis</em>, Western Fence lizard) as a model species to evaluate the full role of topography, climate, vegetation, and roads on dispersal and genetic differentiation. We conducted landscape genetics analyses in five areas within the Sierra Nevada mountain range. Genetic distances calculated from thousands of ddRAD markers were used to optimize landscape resistance surfaces and infer the effects of landscape and topographic features. Across study areas, we found a great deal of consistency in the primary environmental gradients impacting genetic connectivity, along with some site-specific differences, and a range in the proportion genetic variance explained by environmental factors across study sites. High-elevation colder areas were consistently found to be barriers to gene flow, as were areas of high ruggedness and slope. High temperature seasonality and high precipitation during the winter wet season also presented a substantial barrier to gene flow in a majority of study areas. The effect of other landscape variables on genetic differentiation was more idiosyncratic and depended on specific attributes at each site. Across study areas, canyon valleys were always implicated as facilitators to dispersal and key features linking populations and maintaining genetic connectivity, though the relative importance varied in different areas. We emphasize that spatial data layers are complex and multidimensional, and careful consideration of spatial data correlation structure and robust analytic frameworks will be critical to our continued understanding of spatial genetics processes.</p>
