Effect of a 91 day long stay in weightlessness on the International Space Station on mouse skin physiology
Comparitive gene expression in skin between mice maintained in microgravity (0g) and normogravity (1g) environment. Six male C57Bl/J10 mice were housed for 91 days in the specially designed Mouse Drawer System in weightlessness aboard the International Space Station. Three wild-type mice (WT) and three transgenic mice overexpressing the osteogneic factor PTN/OSF1 under the control of the human bone specific ostecalcin promoter (Tg) were used in the experiment. During the 3-month stay on the ISS 3 mice unfortunately died leaving 2 Tg and 1 WT. MDS tissue sharing program allowed several teams to study various tissues from these mice. Our aim was to investigate the effect of such a long period of microgravity on skin physiology by morphological biochemical and genomewide analyses by comparison to similar mice on ground. Gene expression in the skin of 3 space mice and of 3 ground mice was analyzed by microarray. As this unique experiment performed on 3 mice limits the power of statistical analyis as the transgene PTN/OSF1 was not overexpressed in skin and as a pair wise Pearson s correlation rates between the individual levels of expressed transcripts in the WT and the Tg mice were not significantly different from each other in one experimental group (space or ground) data from the 3 mice were combined to compare results from the space an ground groups.

<p>This record contains raw data related to the article "Associations of Preoperative Self-rated Symptoms of Anxiety and Depression on Length of Hospital Stay and Long-term Quality of Life in Patients Undergoing Cardiac Surgery"</p> <p><strong>ABSTRACT</strong></p> <p><strong>Background: </strong>Anxiety and depression are often associated with cardiovascular diseases. Nevertheless, few study authors have investigated psychological effects on immediate and long-term cardiac surgery-related outcomes, such as surgical complications, length of hospital stay (LOS), and long-term health-related quality of life (HRQoL).</p> <p><strong>Objectives: </strong>The aims of this study were to (a) investigate the role of preoperative symptoms of anxiety and depression in predicting LOS in a sample of surgical patients and (b) evaluate the impact of preoperative symptoms of anxiety and depression on the patients' HRQoL 3 months after surgery.</p> <p><strong>Methods: </strong>One hundred fifty-one patients waiting for surgery were included. To evaluate symptoms of anxiety and depression, the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale was used. Multiple regression analyses were conducted to evaluate the impact of both clinical and psychological factors on LOS, whereas quantile regression was performed to assess their effect on the patients' HRQoL 3 months after surgery.</p> <p><strong>Results: </strong>The multiple regression shows that EuroSCORE, length of endotracheal intubation, and anxiety symptoms predict LOS. The multiple quantile regression analyses also show that both symptoms of anxiety and depression predict a negative HRQoL up to 3 months after surgery.</p> <p><strong>Conclusion: </strong>Preoperative symptoms of anxiety predict the patients' LOS, and both symptoms of anxiety and depression predict a scarce HRQoL 3 months after cardiac surgery. These results suggest the need for implementing presurgical in-hospital screening procedures for both symptoms of anxiety and depression. Finally, focused psychological interventions should be implemented for reducing inpatients' hospital LOS and improving their future quality of life.</p>
Length of hospital stay, Clinical and Therapeutic characteristics of patients with COVID-19
<p>Background: The Covid-19 (SARS-CoV-2) pandemic marked unprecedented on healthcare sector globally with increase demand of hospital beds, intensive care facilities, lifesaving supplies and equipments. This retrospective study of two healthcare centers focuses on length of hospital stay, clinical and therapeutic characteristics of patients with COVID-19. These parameters help to identify the available resources and to determine the optimum requirements of healthcare units in pandemics.</p> <p>Materials and Methods: The retrospective data was collected between 12<sup>th</sup> of March and 30<sup>th</sup> of Jun 2020 of polymerase chain reaction (PCR) confirming SARS-COV-2 patients and categorized into mild, moderate, and severe diseased groups based on symptoms and its severity of COVID 19.</p> <p>Results: A total of 843 SARS-COV-2 positive patients were identified for this study, 132 were mild symptomatic cases<em>, </em>168<em>, </em>moderate symptomatic, and 17 were severe symptomatic with mean age of 34.95 ± 15.9 years. The mean length of hospital stay was 16.38, 13.18, 13.72, 9.30, 6.96, 10.86, 5.77 and 7.37 from 1 to 8 treatments consecutively, with 156.327 Chi-square, and 0.000* p-value. Kruskal-Wallis test shows there were significant differences seen between the length of hospital stay among different treatment groups with chi-square (7) = 156.327, with p-value of 0.000(p-value<0.005). Treatment group 1 who were on antiviral had the highest mean no. of hospital stay while treatment group 7 patients who were on no treatments had the lowest stay with mean duration of 5.7days.</p> <p>Conclusion: Length of hospital stay, clinical and therapeutic characteristics of patients with COVID-19 are crucial indicators of pandemic management.
