Data from: Effects of maternal investment, temperament, and cognition on guide dog success

A continuing debate in studies of social development in both humans and other animals is the extent to which early life experiences affect adult behavior. Also unclear are the relative contributions of cognitive skills ("intelligence") and temperament for successful outcomes. Guide dogs are particularly suited to research on these questions. To succeed as a guide dog, individuals must accomplish complex navigation and decision making without succumbing to distractions and unforeseen obstacles. Faced with these rigorous demands, only ∼70% of dogs that enter training ultimately achieve success. What predicts success as a guide dog? To address these questions, we followed 98 puppies from birth to adulthood. We found that high levels of overall maternal behavior were linked with a higher likelihood of program failure. Furthermore, mothers whose nursing style required greater effort by puppies were more likely to produce successful offspring, whereas mothers whose nursing style required less effort were more likely to produce offspring that failed. In young adults, an inability to solve a multistep task quickly, compounded with high levels of perseveration during the task, was associated with failure. Young adults that were released from the program also appeared more anxious, as indicated by a short latency to vocalize when faced with a novel object task. Our results suggest that both maternal nursing behavior and individual traits of cognition and temperament are associated with guide dog success.

UK dogs data from: Genome-wide association studies for canine hip dysplasia in single and multiple populations – implications and potential novel risk loci

<p>Background: <span>Association mapping studies of quantitative trait loci (QTL) for canine hip dysplasia (CHD) </span><span>can contribute to the understanding of the genetic background of this common and debilitating disease and might contribute to its genetic improvement. The power of association studies for CHD is limited by relatively small sample numbers for CHD records within countries, suggesting potential benefits of joining data across countries. However, this is complicated due to the use of different scoring systems across countries. In this study, we incorporated routinely assessed CHD records and genotype data of German Shepherd dogs from </span><span><span>two</span></span><span> countries </span><span><span>(UK and Sweden)</span></span><span> to perform </span><span>genome-wide association stud</span><span>ies (GWAS) within populations using different variations of CHD phenotypes. As phenotypes, dogs were either classified into cases and controls based on the </span><i><span>Fédération Cynologique Internationale</span></i><span> (FCI) five-level grading of the worst hip or the FCI grade was treated as an ordinal trait. </span><span><span>In a subsequent meta-analysis, we added publicly available data from a Finnish population and performed the GWAS across all populations.</span></span><span> Genetic associations for the CHD phenotypes were evaluated in a linear mixed model using 62,089 SNPs.</span></p> <p>Results: <span><span>Multiple SNPs with genome-wide significant and suggestive</span></span><span><span> associations</span></span><span> </span><span><span>were detected in single-population GWAS and the meta-analysis.</span></span><span> Few of these SNPs overlapped between populations </span><span><span>or between single-population GWAS and the meta-analysis</span></span><span>, suggesting that many CHD-related QTL are population-specific. More significant or suggestive SNPs were identified when FCI grades were used as phenotypes in comparison to the case-control approach. </span><i><span>MED13</span></i><span> (Chr 9) and </span><i><span>PLEKHA7</span></i><span> (Chr 21) emerged as novel positional candidate genes associated with hip dysplasia.</span></p> <p>Conclusions: <span>Our findings confirm the complex genetic nature of hip dysplasia in dogs, with multiple loci associated with the trait, </span><span><span>most</span></span><span> of which are population-specific. Routinely assessed CHD information collected across countries provide an opportunity to increase sample sizes and statistical power for association studies. While the lack of standardisation of CHD assessment schemes across countries poses a challenge, we showed that conversion of traits can be utilised to overcome this obstacle.</span></p>

Dog in the matrix: Envisioning countrywide connectivity conservation for an endangered carnivore

<ol> <li><span>Elevated rates of anthropogenic impacts on land-use regimes have pushed terrestrial megafauna to the brink of extinction. Consequently, it is critical to adopt conservation approaches that safeguard individual populations, while retaining connectivity among these populations. Conserving spatially structured populations of imperiled species at large scales is often complex; the past decades have therefore seen a rise in spatial conservation prioritization exercises aimed at shaping landscape-scale conservation programmes.</span></li> <li><span>We present a framework for informing nationwide connectivity conservation, linking ecological and administrative scales, to maximise relevance for management. We assessed connectivity of the endangered dhole <i>Cuon alpinus</i> among 155 potential source populations across India using a data-driven approach combined with graph and circuit theory. We used clustering algorithms to identify ecologically meaningful conservation landscapes; within each landscape, we identified priority source populations based on their connectedness, and quantified pixel-specific habitat <i>accessibility</i>. We superimposed administrative boundaries on our findings to provide conservation recommendations at this management-relevant scale.</span></li> <li><span>We first mapped potential dhole movement across India. Dhole populations fell within three primary clusters—Western and Eastern Ghats (WEG), Central Indian Landscape (CIL), and North-East India (NEI)—of which NEI had the highest forest cover, most diffuse connectivity, and lowest human density, while WEG had the highest protected area coverage, and overall connectedness. Within each conservation landscape we evaluated the relative importance of Protected Areas and accessibility<i> </i>to high-quality patches. Parts of the Eastern Ghats had low habitat accessibility, yet high potential for dhole landscape connectivity. In 114 identified administrative units of priority for habitat restoration, we highlight those with low accessibility, i.e., areas where restoration needs to be spatially targeted for maximum benefits.</span></li> <li> <i>Synthesis and applications</i>. We make recommendations for spatially-informed habitat restoration to enhance dhole connectivity in India, highlighting the importance of improving matrix permeability where dhole movement is currently restricted. More broadly, the framework we present is useful across species and management contexts, as it combines spatial and administrative scales to make ecologically-informed assessments of high relevance to management. Synergistically integrating species ecology, threats, and administrative considerations in connectivity conservation plans can enhance success of species conservation programmes.</li> </ol>
