Sub-picosecond to Sub-nanosecond Vibrational Energy Transfer Dynamics in Pentaerythritol Tetranitrate

<p><strong>Experimental Data</strong></p> <p>All data are saved as a .csv file. Each transient .csv file is labeled according to molecule, file contents, polarization, pump laser power, spectrometer grating position, and a date (<em>e.g</em>. PETN_TA_para_1.8mW_11.1um_06Feb2020.csv). The first column contains frequencies (in cm<sup>-1</sup>) while the first row indexes each time delay (in ps). Transient spectra at select time delays are similarly labeled (<em>e.g</em>. PETN_spectra_7.8um_FTIRcorr_07Feb2020.csv) with the same data organization within each file. The select transient spectra shown at 1660 cm-1 were taken from the 6.1 &micro;m &quot;TA&quot; dataset. The static PETN FTIR and 33&deg;C ThDIR spectra are given as two column .csv files: the first column is frequency (in cm<sup>-1</sup>) while the second column is either transmission<br> or <span class="math-tex">\(\Delta \mathrm{OD}\)</span>.</p> <p><strong>Theory Data</strong></p> <p>Included in the data repository are all of the necessary inputs to perform the vibrational analysis using the Phonopy software package. The minimized PETN crystal used in the nite displacement calculations is given as a POSCAR file format to be used in VASP, the enumeration of all displacements used in the first anharmonic expansion is given in disp_fc3.yaml. The collection of all individual VASP calculations into second- and third-order force constants are contained in the .hdf5 files. The remaining files contain all of the details for the Phonopy calculations performed, per-mode population adjustments in the JDOS are achieved by modifying the phono3py/phonon3/triplets.py source code file which is distributed with all versions of the code. Short movies of each IR mode&nbsp; and all phonon modes between 0&ndash;800 cm<sup>-1</sup> are presented in .gif format; filenames are either the calculated frequency or, in the case of several modes, the approximate center frequency.</p>

Data from: Decoding the locational information in the orb web vibrations of Araneus diadematus and Zygiella x-notata

A spider's web is a multifunctional structure that captures prey and provides an information platform that transmits vibrational information. Many physical factors interact to influence web vibration and information content, from vibration source properties and input location, to web physical properties and geometry. The aim of the study was to test whether orb web vibration contains information about the location of the source of vibration. We used finite-element analysis model webs to control and vary major physical factors, investigating webs where spiders use a direct or remote monitoring strategy. When monitoring with eight sensors (legs) at the web centre, a comparison of longitudinal and transverse wave amplitude between the sensors gave sufficient information to determine source direction and distance, respectively. These localization cues were robust to changes in source amplitude, input angle and location, with increased accuracy at lower source amplitudes. When remotely monitoring the web using a single thread connected to the web's hub (a signal thread), we found that locational information was not available when the angle of the source input was unknown. Furthermore, a free sector and a stiff hub were physical mechanisms to aid information transfer, which provides insights for bioinspired fibre networks for sensing technologies.

Data from: A generalized solution procedure for in-plane free vibration of rectangular plates and annular sectorial plates

A generalized solution procedure is developed for in-plane free vibration of rectangular and annular sectorial plates with general boundary conditions. For the annular sectorial plate, the introduction of a logarithmic radial variable simplifies the basic theory and the expression of the total energy. The coordinates, geometric parameters and potential energy for the two different shapes are organized in a unified framework such that a generalized solving procedure becomes feasible. By using the improved Fourier-Ritz approach, the admissible functions are formulated in trigonometric form, which allows the explicit assembly of global mass and stiffness matrices for both rectangular and annular sectorial plates, thereby making the method computationally effective, especially when analyzing annular sectorial plates. Moreover, the improved Fourier expansion eliminates the potential discontinuity of the original normal and tangential displacement functions and their derivatives in the entire domain, and accelerates the convergence. The generalized Fourier-Ritz approach for both shapes has the characteristics of generality, accuracy and efficiency. These features are demonstrated via a few numerical examples.

Leaf vibrations produced by chewing provide a consistent acoustic target for plant recognition of herbivores

<p>Plant defenses that respond to the threat of herbivory require accurate sensing of the presence of herbivores. Herbivory cues include mechanical damage, elicitors from insect saliva or eggs, and airborne volatiles emitted by wounded plants. Plants can also respond to the leaf vibrations produced by chewing herbivores. However, previous studies of the influence of feeding vibrations on plant defenses have been limited to single species pairs. In this study we test the hypothesis that chewing vibrations differ among herbivore species, both in their acoustic features and in their effect on plant defense responses. We first compare the acoustic traits of larval feeding vibrations in ten species from six families of Lepidoptera and one family of Hymenoptera. We then test responses of <i>A. thaliana</i> plants to variation among feeding vibrations of different individuals of one species, and to feeding vibrations of two species, including a pierid butterfly and a noctuid moth. All feeding vibrations consisted of repetitive pulses of vibration associated with leaf tissue removal, although chewing rates varied between species and between large and small individuals within species. The frequency spectra of the vibrations generated by leaf feeding were similar across all ten species. Induced defenses of <i>A. thaliana</i> did not differ when plants were played vibrations from different individuals, or vibrations of two species of herbivores with different chewing rates, when amplitude was held constant. These results suggest that feeding vibrations provide a consistent set of cues for plant recognition of herbivores.</p>

Data from: Fatiguing effects of indirect vibration stimulation in upper limb muscles- post and during isometric contractions superimposed on upper limb vibration

Whole body vibration and upper limb vibration (ULV), continues to gain popularity as exercise intervention for rehabilitation and sports applications. However, the fatiguing effects of indirect vibration stimulation are not yet fully understood. We investigated the effects of ULV stimulation superimposed on fatiguing isometric contractions using a purpose developed upper limb stimulation device. Thirteen healthy volunteers were exposed to both ULV superimposed to fatiguing isometric contractions (V) and isometric contractions alone- Control (C). Both Vibration (V) and Control (C) exercises were performed at 80% of the maximum voluntary contractions. The stimulation used was 30 Hz frequency of 0.4 mm amplitude. Surface-electromyographic (EMG) activity of the Biceps Brachii, Triceps Brachii, and Flexor Carpi Radialis were measured. EMG amplitude (EMGrms) and mean frequency (MEF) were computed to quantify muscle activity and fatigue levels. All muscles displayed significantly higher reduction in MEFs and corresponding significant increase in EMGrms with the V than the Control, during fatiguing contractions (P &lt; 0.05). Post vibration, all muscles showed higher levels of MEFs after recovery compared to the control. Our results show that near maximal isometric fatiguing contractions superimposed on vibration stimulation lead to a higher rate of fatigue development compared to the isometric contraction alone in the upper limb muscles. Results also show higher manifestation of mechanical fatigue post treatment with vibration compared to the control. Vibration superimposed on isometric contraction not only seems to alter the neuromuscular function during fatiguing efforts by inducing higher neuromuscular load but also post vibration treatment.

Data from: Frequency tuning and directional sensitivity of tympanal vibrations in the field cricket Gryllus bimaculatus

Female field crickets use phonotaxis to locate males by their calling song. Male song production and female behavioural sensitivity form a pair of matched frequency filters, which in Gryllus bimaculatus are tuned to a frequency of about 4.7 kHz. Directional sensitivity is supported by an elaborate system of acoustic tracheae, which make the ears function as pressure difference receivers. As a result, phase differences between left and right sound inputs are transformed into vibration amplitude differences. Here we critically tested the hypothesis that acoustic properties of internal transmissions play a major role in tuning directional sensitivity to the calling song frequency, by measuring tympanal vibrations as a function of sound direction and frequency. Rather than sharp frequency tuning of directional sensitivity corresponding to the calling song, we found broad frequency tuning, with optima shifted to higher frequencies. These findings agree with predictions from a vector summation model for combining external and internal sounds. We show that the model provides robust directional sensitivity that is, however, broadly tuned with an optimum well above the calling song frequency. We therefore advocate that additional filtering, e.g. at a higher (neuronal) level, significantly contributes to frequency tuning of directional sensitivity.

Data from: A multiscale vibrational spectroscopic approach for identification and biochemical characterization of pollen

Background: Analysis of pollen grains reveals valuable information on biology, ecology, forensics, climate change, insect migration, food sources and aeroallergens. Vibrational (infrared and Raman) spectroscopies offer chemical characterization of pollen via identifiable spectral features without any sample pretreatment. We have compared the level of chemical information that can be obtained by different multiscale vibrational spectroscopic techniques. Methodology: Pollen from 15 different species of Pinales (conifers) were measured by seven infrared and Raman methodologies. In order to obtain infrared spectra, both reflectance and transmission measurements were performed on ground and intact pollen grains (bulk measurements), in addition, infrared spectra were obtained by microspectroscopy of multigrain and single pollen grain measurements. For Raman microspectroscopy measurements, spectra were obtained from the same pollen grains by focusing two different substructures of pollen grain. The spectral data from the seven methodologies were integrated into one data model by the Consensus Principal Component Analysis, in order to obtain the relations between the molecular signatures traced by different techniques. Results: The vibrational spectroscopy enabled biochemical characterization of pollen and detection of phylogenetic variation. The spectral differences were clearly connected to specific chemical constituents, such as lipids, carbohydrates, carotenoids and sporopollenins. The extensive differences between pollen of Cedrus and the rest of Pinaceae family were unambiguously connected with molecular composition of sporopollenins in pollen grain wall, while pollen of Picea has apparently higher concentration of carotenoids than the rest of the family. It is shown that vibrational methodologies have great potential for systematic collection of data on ecosystems and that the obtained phylogenetic variation can be well explained by the biochemical composition of pollen. Out of the seven tested methodologies, the best taxonomical differentiation of pollen was obtained by infrared measurements on bulk samples, as well as by Raman microspectroscopy measurements of the corpus region of the pollen grain. Raman microspectroscopy measurements indicate that measurement area, as well as the depth of focus, can have crucial influence on the obtained data.
