How do host-plant use and seasonal life cycle relate to insect body size: A case study on European geometrid moths (Lepidoptera: Geometridae)
<p><span>We used European geometrid moths (> 630 species) as a model group to investigate how life history traits linked to larval host plant use (i.e., diet breadth and host-plant growth form) and seasonal life cycle (i.e., voltinism, overwintering stage, and caterpillar phenology) are related to adult body size in holometabolous insect herbivores. To do so, we applied phylogenetic comparative methods to account for shared evolutionary history among herbivore species. We further categorised larval diet breadth based on the phylogenetic structure of utilised host plant genera. Our results indicate that species associated with woody plants are, on average, larger than herb feeders and increase in size with increasing diet breadth. Obligatorily univoltine species are larger than multivoltine species, and attain larger sizes when their larvae are restricted to the early season. Furthermore, adult body size is significantly smaller in species that overwinter in the pupal stage compared to those that overwinter as egg or caterpillar. In summary, our results indicate that the ecological niche of an holometabolous insect herbivore is strongly interrelated with its size at maturity.</span></p>

Macroecological patterns in European butterflies unveil strong interrelations between larval diet breadth, latitudinal range size, and voltinism
<p>Diet breadth is one of the fundamental species traits of an herbivorous insect, as it strongly determines its ecological niche and, at the same time, its ability to cope with changing environmental conditions. To what extent this trait is associated with other characteristics that may influence a species' ability to respond to environmental changes, however, is yet poorly understood. Using European butterflies as a model group of holometabolous insect herbivores, we here tested whether larval diet breadth is positively related with latitudinal range size (i.e., north-south extent of global distribution), voltinism, and adult body size. We further investigated whether range size, voltinism, and body size are associated with each other. In order to test for these relationships, we based our analyses on a solid, time-calibrated butterfly phylogeny as well as on an updated host plant database that reflects interactions between butterfly larvae and their food plants in a yet unparalleled breadth and depth. We further calculated two measures to reflect the fundamental dietary niche of a species: taxonomic diet breadth and phylogenetic diet breadth. Irrespective of diet breadth measure, we found that diet breadth increases with latitudinal range size. We further found an overall higher diet breadth for species that are capable of realising multiple broods per year (i.e., multivoltine species) compared to obligatorily univoltine species. Contrary to expectation, our results indicated a negative relationship between larval diet breadth and adult body size. Regarding our explorative analyses, we observed a positive link between voltinism and latitudinal range size, while neither one of these variables was associated with body size. Taken together, our study shows that larval diet breadth, latitudinal range size, and voltinism are positively linked in European butterflies, and we argue that these interrelationships are important in determining a species' overall potential to cope with changing environmental conditions.</p>
EUParlspeech: A Dataset of Over 1 Million References to European Integration in Parliamentary Speeches
<p>As part of my PhD dissertation I developed EUParlspeech, a dataset of over 1 million references to European integration made in the plenary debates of ten national parliaments between 1989 and 2019. It is built from existing datasets of parliamentary speeches, most notably Parlspeech (Rauh and Schwalbach 2020). The dataset has applications for scholars of EU integration, party competition, political communication, and international relations. This chapter in my dissertation explains the construction of the dataset, describes its features, and demonstrates its face, convergent, and predictive validity. Automated analysis of parties' EU statements in parliament yield meaningful and well-known cross party differences, with challenger parties more likely to send clearer, more sceptical cues on integration than mainstream parties. Moreover, these automated measures correlate highly with expert assessments (CHES) and - in the case of the UK's Conservative Party - individual MPs' ideal point estimates based on EU statements in plenary debates can predict their subsequent vote and position at the 2016 referendum. I conclude that EUParlspeech data provide a promising new approach to studying party contestation over European integration.</p>

<p>This dataset is the µCT scan of the holotype ( worker, JDC10574R) of †Dolichoderus jonasi Dubovikoff & Zharkov, 2022 that was used by Dubovikoff & Zharkov in publication "Dubovikoff, D. A., Zharkov, D. M. 2022. A new species of the genus Dolichoderus Lund, 1831 (Hymenoptera: Formicidae) from a Late Eocene European amber. Caucasian Entomological Bulletin 181, 147–152 (doi:10.23885/181433262022181-147152)."</p><p>Arrays of microtomographic data were obtained at St. Petersburg State University (St. Petersburg, Russia) using a desktop high-resolution X-ray microtomograph SkyScan 1172. The holotype (JDC10574R) was scanned with the following parameters: voltage 40 kV, current 250 µA, without filter, with a pixel size of 2.46 microns and a resolution of 2848 × 2692 pixels per slice with continuous 360° rotation and a shutter speed of 1300 ms per frame (2268 X-ray projections).</p><p>The material is currently deposited in the collection of the Kaliningrad Amber Museum, Kaliningrad, Russia.</p><p> </p>
