Point-Quarter Harvested Plant Weight Measurements to Estimate Shrub ANPP in a Chihuahuan Desert Creosote Shrubland at the Sevilleta National Wildlife Refuge, New Mexico (2007- present)

In an effort to better quantify NPP of Creosotebush in the Five-Points region, it was decided to test the Point-Quarter method against the standard 1-m2 quadrat method that has been in use since 1998. Transects were laid out across the 5 mammal trapping webs as well as across burned and unburned plots of the Mixed Shrub site (MS). Repeat measures of the same bushes are performed seasonally. Whole shrubs of various size classes are collected and sorted and weighed to develop regressions for biomass.

The Burden of Reproduction in Lizards: Changes in Respiratory Physiology Associated with Reduced Lung Volume at the Sevilleta National Wildlife Refuge (2007-2008)

Previous morphological work on lizards suggests that the volume of growing eggs may result in a significant decrease in lung volume during gravidity. Iguanid lizard lungs are located within continuous thoracic and abdominal cavities and are highly distensible. Because of their distensible nature and lack of a diaphragm, both naturally occurring and introduced structures within the abdominal and thoracic cavities (i.e. organs, food, eggs) compress them and potentially reduce available lung volume for gas exchange. During reproduction, this decrease comes at a time of increased energetic demands, due to the cost of provisioning eggs and the physical burden of transporting the extra mass before laying. This means that females must increase the oxygen/carbon dioxide exchange with effectively smaller lung capacity than when they are not reproductive. Therefore, the way species compensate for this decrease affects performance, and ultimately the survival of individuals and their offspring.

Carabids data of Pterostichus flavofemoratus and Carabus depressus in the Gran Paradiso National Park (2006, 2007, 2012, 2013)

<p>Understanding risks to biodiversity requires predictions of the spatial distribution of species adapting to changing ecosystems and, to that end, earth observations integrating field surveys prove essential as they provide key figures for assessing landscape-wide biodiversity scenarios. Here, we develop, and apply to a relevant case study, a method suited to merge earth/field observations with spatially explicit stochastic metapopulation models to study the near-term ecological dynamics of target species in complex terrains. Our framework incorporates the use of species distribution models for a reasoned estimation of the initial presence of the target species, and accounts for imperfect and incomplete detection of the species presence in the study area. It also uses a metapopulation fitness function derived from earth observation data subsuming the ecological niche of the target species. This framework is applied to contrast occupancy of two species of carabids (<em>Pterostichus flavofemoratus</em>, <em>Carabus depressus</em>) observed  in the context of a large ecological monitoring program carried out within the Gran Paradiso National Park (GPNP, Italy). Results suggest that the proposed framework may indeed exploit the hallmarks of spatially explicit ecological approaches and of remote Earth observations. The model reproduces well the observed <em>in-situ</em> data. Moreover, it projects in the near-term the two species' presence both in space and time, highlighting the features of the metapopulation dynamics of colonization and extinction, and their expected trends within verifiable timeframes.</p>

Redescription of the cranial skeleton of the Early Devonian (Emsian) sarcopterygian Durialepis edentatus Otto, 2007 (Dipnomorpha; Porolepiformes)

<p>Porolepiforms represent a clade of Devonian stem lungfishes, divided into the cosmine-bearing and likely paraphyletic 'Porolepidae' (e.g., <em>Porolepis</em>, <em>Heimenia</em>) and the cosmine-free and stratigraphically younger Holoptychiidae (e.g., <em>Holoptychius</em>, <em>Glyptolepis</em>, <em>Laccognathus</em>). Data on the dermoskeleton are available for both groups, but are more limited for 'porolepids'. Here we present new information on the 'porolepid' <em>Durialepis edentatus</em> from the Emsian (Early Devonian) of Germany based on micro-CT scanning. The material comprises an articulated skull of a single three-dimensionally preserved individual. The arrangement of the cheekbones of <em>Durialepis edentatus</em> recalls that of <em>Porolepis brevis</em>, with the occurrence of two subsidiary squamosals. However, the parieto-ethmoidal and postparietal shields are roughly equal in size, a condition similar to that of <em>Glyptolepis groenlandica</em> and intermediate between <em>Porolepis brevis</em> and holoptychiids. A large parasymphysial tooth plate displays five tooth rows with three large tusks in the median row, another intermediate arrangement between the primitive condition of <em>Porolepis</em> sp. (eight rows) and holoptychiids (five or fewer rows). Remarkably among porolepiforms, this dental plate is perfectly symmetrical. Despite the occurrence of cosmine and rhombic scales, the combination of traits displayed in <em>Durialepis</em> deviates from <em>Porolepis</em> in several ways, reflecting features shared with holoptychiids to the exclusion of other 'porolepids'.  <em>Durialepis edentatus</em> is thus a key addition to our knowledge of 'porolepid' anatomy. Because <em>Durialepis edentatus</em> preserves much of the cranial and postcranial skeleton in a single individual, it represents a suitable early dipnomorph representative for inclusion in phylogenetic analyses on sarcopterygians and early osteichthyans.</p>

This rock is referenced 'Whiteley Pike 2, North Sunday Sight' on the Beckensall Archive (BA) and includes the description by the original finder: "A single basin (based on drawing by Diane Charlton, in R Charlton (1983)). Shortflatt a (April 2007)

Stone relocated to private property near Shortflatt, NW of Belsay, Northumberland. Referenced 'Shortflatt a' on the Beckensall Archive (BA) this stone now resides in a niche at Shortflatt Tower and is described as: 'A finely made cup and groove at the centre of two well-spaced penannulars.' BA also provides the following info: 'The four marked rocks (Shortflatt a-d) have come to light in fields dominated by a huge, unexcavated burial mound known as the Shortflatt tumulus. The farmer has also drawn attention to an area (NZ 0835 8060) where much stone has been ploughed out over many years 30m from the western edge of the field boundary; it may be the site of another cairn.' Wallington Newhouses b (May 2007)

Relocated small stone found on private farmland near Wallington, Northumberland. This is one of a number of small artificially marked stones recorded on the Beckensall Archive (BA) in the Wallington Newhouses area. These stones and a number of querns were found near a probable Romano – British settlement. Although the exact BA reference isn't known, NADRAP added the record to ERA as 'Wallington Newhouses b' and described: 'One single cup mark, roughly circular as 0.05 m to 0.06 m diameter by 0.015 m depth. The motif is little more than finger-tip depth at the base. There is no pecking in the sloping sides of the motif, and two marks in the base are thought possible markings only.'
