Global dataset of co-incident TLS-derived and harvested tree biomass

<p>This dataset was used to producee the figures and statistics of the publication &quot;Estimating forest aboveground biomass with terrestrial laser scanning: current status and future directions&quot;.</p> <p>This dataset contains 391 entries. Each entry is a tree that was terrestrial laser scanned and consecutively harvested to assess its aboveground biomass (AGB). AGB was also obtained from allometric scaling equations. Several ancillary tree properties such as stem diameter, foliage conditions,... and scan metadata (type of scanner, pattern) are included. We refer to the tab &#39;headers&#39; for an explanation and units of the respective columns. Exploring the Chemistry Induced by Energetic Processing of the H2-bearing, CO-rich Apolar Ice Layer

<p>Interstellar ice mantles on the surfaces of dust grains are thought to have a bilayered structure, with a H2O-rich polar layer, covered by a CO-rich apolar layer that probably harbors H2&nbsp;and other volatiles such as N2. In this work, we explored the chemistry induced by 2 keV electrons and Ly&alpha; photons in H2:CO:15N2&nbsp;ice analogs of the CO-rich layer when exposed to similar fluences to those expected from the cosmic-ray-induced secondary electrons and UV photons during the typical lifetime of dense clouds. Six products were identified upon 2 keV electron irradiation: CO2, C2O (and other carbon chain oxides), CH4, H2CO, H2C2O, and H15NCO. The total product abundances corresponded to 5%-10% of the initial CO molecules exposed to electron irradiation. Ly&alpha; photon irradiation delivered one to two orders of magnitude lower yields with a similar product branching ratio, which may be due to the low UV-photon absorption cross section of the ice sample at this wavelength. Formation of additional N-bearing species, namely C215N2&nbsp;and&nbsp;15NH3, was only observed in the absence of H2&nbsp;and CO molecules, respectively, suggesting that reactants derived from H2&nbsp;and CO molecules preferentially react with each other instead of with&nbsp;15N2&nbsp;and its dissociation products. In summary, ice chemistry induced by energetic processing of the CO-rich apolar ice layer provides alternative formation pathways for several species detected in the interstellar medium, including some related to the complex organic molecule chemistry.&nbsp;</p> <p>Here, we present all the IR spectra and temperature programmed desorption data for the 16&nbsp;experiments that were used for this publication (Exp. 1-14, A1,A2), along with 7 additional calibration experiments (C1-C7). Please, note that all infrared spectra are taken in reflection-absorption mode, except for those corresponding to Experiments C1-C7, taken in transmittance mode.&nbsp;</p>

Data from: Traits mediate niches and co-occurrences of forest beetles in ways that differ among bioclimatic regions

<p><b>Aim</b></p> <p>To investigate the role of traits in beetle community assembly and test for consistency in these effects among several bioclimatic regions. We asked (1) whether traits predicted species' responses to environmental gradients (i.e., their niches), (2) whether these same traits could predict co-occurrence patterns, and (3) how consistent were niches and the role of traits among study regions.</p> <p><b>Location</b></p> <p>Boreal forests in Norway and Finland, temperate forests in Germany.</p> <p><b>Methods</b></p> <p>We complied capture records of 468 wood-living beetle species from the three regions, along with nine morphological and ecological traits. Eight climatic and forest covariates were also collected. We used Bayesian hierarchical joint species distribution models to estimate the influence of traits and phylogeny on species' niches. We also tested for correlations between species associations and trait similarity. Finally, we compared species niches and the effects of traits among study regions.</p> <p><b>Results</b></p> <p>Traits explained some of the variability in species' niches, but their effects differed among study regions. However, substantial phylogenetic signal in species niches implies that unmeasured but phylogenetically structured traits have a stronger effect. Degree of trait similarity was correlated with species associations but depended idiosyncratically on the trait and region. Species niches were much more consistent – widespread taxa often responded similarly to an environmental gradient among regions.</p> <p><b>Main conclusions</b></p> <p>The inconsistent effects of traits among regions limits their current use in understanding beetle community assembly. Phylogenetic signal in niches, however, implies that better predictive traits can eventually be identified. Consistency of species niches among regions means niches may remain relatively stable under future climate and land use changes; this lends credibility to predictive distribution models based on future climate projections but may imply that species' scope for short-term adaptation is limited.</p>

Surface measurement data of polished LTCC: Characterization of pores in polished low temperature co-fired glass-ceramic composites for optimization of their micromachining

<p>Pores are intrinsic defects of ceramic composites and influence their functional properties significantly. Their characterization is therefore a pivotal task in material and process optimization. It is demonstrated that polished section analysis allows for obtaining precise information on pore size, shape, area fraction, and homogeneous distribution. It is proven that laser scanning microscopy provides accurate height maps and is thus an appropriate technique for assessing surface features. Such data is used to compare areas with good and poor polishing results, and various surface parameters are evaluated in terms of their informative value and data processing effort. The material under investigation is a low-temperature co-fired ceramic composite. Through statistical analysis of the data, the inclination angle was identified as an appropriate parameter to describe the polishing result. By using masked data, direct conclusions can be drawn about the leveling of load-bearing surface areas, which are crucial in photolithographic processing steps and bonding technology. A broad discussion of different defects based on the results contributes to a critical analysis of the potentials and obstacles of micromachining of low-temperature cofired ceramic substrates.</p>

<p>(This is the dataset used in <a href="https://doi.org/10.1101/2022.05.18.492501" rel="noopener" title="Dynamic Structure Of Motor Cortical Neuron Co-Activity Carries Behaviorally Relevant Information">Dynamic Structure Of Motor Cortical Neuron Co-Activity Carries Behaviorally Relevant Information</a>, Abstract below)</p> <p><span>Skillful, voluntary movements are underpinned by computations performed by networks of interconnected neurons in the primary motor cortex (M1). Computations are reflected by patterns of co-activity between neurons. Using pairwise spike time statistics, co-activity can be summarized as a functional network (FN). Here, we show that the structure of FNs constructed from an instructed-delay reach task in non-human primates are behaviorally specific: low dimensional embedding and graph alignment scores show that FNs constructed from closer target reach directions are also closer in network space. Using short intervals across a trial we constructed temporal FNs and found that temporal FNs traverse a low-dimensional subspace in a reach-specific trajectory. Alignment scores show that FNs become separable and correspondingly decodable shortly after the instruction cue. Finally, we observe that reciprocal connections in FNs transiently decrease following the instruction cue consistent with the hypothesis that information external to the recorded population temporarily alters the structure of the network at this moment.</span></p>

Data from: Invasive plants have greater growth than co-occurring natives in live soil subjected to a drought-rewetting treatment

<p>Although several studies indicate that invasive plant species respond more negatively to drought than native plant species, little remains understood of how and whether drought-rewetting events may affect growth of invasive and co-occurring native plant species both directly and indirectly through soil microorganisms. In a fully crossed factorial design, we grew individuals of four congeneric pairs of invasive and native plant species in 2.5 L pots that contained live or sterilized field soil under one of three drought treatments: no-drought, drought, drought-rewetting. Results show that drought caused a significantly greater decline in total biomass of invasive plants than that of native plants regardless of the presence of live soil microorganisms. However, total biomass of the invasive plants exhibited a greater recovery from drought following rewetting than did that of the native plant species. Moreover, the recovery from drought in invasive species tended to be stronger in live soil than in sterilized soil, while for the native plants, recovery from drought was stronger in sterilized soil than in live soil. Overall, these results suggest that soil biota may enable invasive plants to grow larger than co-occurring native plant species in ecosystems that experience cycles of drought and rewetting.</p>

Master database for publication "Stakeholder engagement and knowledge co-production for better watershed management with the Freshwater Health Index"

<p>&nbsp;</p> <p>The spreadsheet is the master database used for the research with the title of &quot;Stakeholder engagement and knowledge co-production for better watershed management with the Freshwater Health Index&quot; to be published on&nbsp;<em>Current Research in Environmental Sustainability</em> in late 2022.</p> <p>The data include narratives for six principles on stakeholder engagement and knowledge co-production. These principles were derived by combining&nbsp;Talley et al&rsquo;s&nbsp;five principles for effective stakeholder engagement (Talley et al. 2016) with Norstr&ouml;m et al&rsquo;s&nbsp;four&nbsp;principles for knowledge co-production (Norstr&ouml;m et al. 2020). The six principles were&nbsp;aligned with the components of the freshwater health index (FHI) framework. Project leaders from&nbsp;nine FHI case studies&nbsp;completed a text table based on the description of the six principles and their FHI factors. This process generated the present master qualitative database with narrative responses.&nbsp;</p> <p>The socio-ecological context for each case study is provided for contextualization.</p>
