Data from: Photocatalytic Inactivation of E. coli under UV Light Irradiation using Large Surface Area Anatase TiO2 Quantum Dots

In this study, high specific surface area of anatase TiO2 quantum dots were successfully synthesized through a novel one-step microwave-hydrothermal method in rapid synthesis time (20 min) without further heat treatment. XRD analysis and HR-TEM images showed that the as-prepared TiO2 quantum dots of ~2 nm size have high crystallinity with anatase phase. Optical properties showed that the energy band-gap (Eg) of as-prepared TiO2 quantum dots was 3.60 eV, which is higher than the standard TiO2 bandgap, which might be due to the quantum size effect. Raman studies showed shifting and broadening of the peaks of TiO2 quantum dots due to the reducing of the crystallite size. The obtained BET specific surface area (381 m2/g) of TiO2 quantum dots is greater compared to the surface area (181 m2/g) of commercial TiO2 nanoparticles. The photocatalytic activities of TiO2 quantum dots were conducted by the inactivation of E. coli under ultraviolet light irradiation and compared with commercially available anatase TiO2 nanoparticles. The photocatalytic inactivation ability of E. coli was estimated to be 91% at 60 μg/ml for TiO2 quantum dots, which is superior to the commercial TiO2 nanoparticles. Hence, the present study provides new insight into the rapid synthesis of TiO2 quantum dots without any annealing treatment to increase the absorbance of ultraviolet light for superior photocatalytic inactivation ability of E. coli.

Data from: Irradiation-catalyzed degradation of methyl orange using BaF2-TiO2 nanocomposite catalysts prepared by a sol–gel method

BaF2-TiO2 nanocomposite material (hereinafter called the composite) was prepared by a sol–gel method. And the composite surface area, morphology and structure were characterized by Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) method, X-ray diffraction(XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The results showed that BaF2 and TiO2 form a PN-like structure on the surface of the composite. Composites were used to catalyze the degradation of methyl orange by irradiation with ultraviolet light, γ-rays, and an electron beam(EB). It was demonstrated that the composite is found to be more efficient than prepared TiO2 and commercial P25 in the degradation of methyl orange under γ-irradiation. And increasing the composite catalyst concentration within a certain range can effectively improve the decolorization rate of the methyl orange solution. However, when the composite material is used to catalyze the degradation of organic matter in the presence of ultraviolet light or 10 MeV electron beam irradiation, the catalytic effect is poor or substantially ineffective. In addition, a hybrid mechanism is proposed; BaF2 absorbs γ-rays to generate radioluminescence(RL) and further excites TiO2 to generate photo-charges. And due to the heterojunction effect, the resulting photo-charge will produce more active particles. This seems to be a possible mechanism to explain γ-irradiation catalytic behavior.

Data from: Monoallelic loss of the imprinted gene Grb10 promotes tumor formation in irradiated Nf1+/- mice

Imprinted genes are expressed from only one parental allele and heterozygous loss involving the expressed allele is sufficient to produce complete loss of protein expression. Genetic alterations are common in tumorigenesis but the role of imprinted genes in this process is not well understood. In earlier work we mutagenized mice heterozygous for the Neurofibromatosis I tumor suppressor gene (NF1) to model radiotherapy-associated second malignant neoplasms that arise in irradiated NF1 patients. Expression analysis of tumor cell lines established from our mouse models identified Grb10 expression as widely absent. Grb10 is an imprinted gene and polymorphism analysis of cell lines and primary tumors demonstrates that the expressed allele is commonly lost in diverse Nf1 mutant tumors arising in our mouse models. We performed functional studies to test whether Grb10 restoration or loss alter fundamental features of the tumor growth. Restoring Grb10 in Nf1 mutant tumors decreases proliferation, decreases soft agar colony formation and downregulates Ras signaling. Conversely, Grb10 silencing in untransformed mouse embryo fibroblasts significantly increased cell proliferation and increased Ras-GTP levels. Expression of a constitutively activated MEK rescued tumor cells from Grb10-mediated reduction in colony formation. These studies reveal that Grb10 loss can occur during in vivo tumorigenesis, with a functional consequence in untransformed primary cells. In tumors, Grb10 loss independently promotes Ras pathway hyperactivation, which promotes hyperproliferation, an early feature of tumor development. In the context of a robust Nf1 mutant mouse model of cancer this work identifies a novel role for an imprinted gene in tumorigenesis.

Data from: Ultraviolet irradiation increases size of the first clutch but decreases longevity in a marine copepod

An important component of life history theory is understanding how natural variation arises in populations. Both endogenous and exogenous factors contribute to organism survival and reproduction, and therefore, it is important to understand how such factors are both beneficial and detrimental to population dynamics. One ecologically relevant factor that influences the life history of aquatic organisms is ultraviolet (UV) radiation. While the majority of research has focused on the potentially detrimental effects that UV radiation has on aquatic organisms, few studies have evaluated hormetic responses stimulated by radiation under select conditions. The goal of this study was to evaluate the impact of UV-A/B irradiation on life history characteristics in Tigriopus californicus copepods. After exposing copepods to UV-A/B irradiation (control, one, and three-hour UV treatments at 0.5 W/m2), we measured the impact of exposure on fecundity, reproductive effort, and longevity. We found that UV irradiation increased the size of the first clutch among all reproducing females in both the one and three-hour experimental groups and decreased longevity among all females that mated in the one-hour treatment. UV irradiation had no effect on the number of clutches females produced. These findings indicate a potential benefit of UV irradiation on reproductive performance early in life, although the same exposure came at a cost to longevity.
