Transient neuronal populations are required to guide callosal axons: a role for semaphorin 3C.
<p>Abstract</p> <p>The corpus callosum (CC) is the main pathway responsible for interhemispheric communication. CC agenesis is associated with numerous human pathologies, suggesting that a range of developmental defects can result in abnormalities in this structure. Midline glial cells are known to play a role in CC development, but we here show that two transient populations of midline neurons also make major contributions to the formation of this commissure. We report that these two neuronal populations enter the CC midline prior to the arrival of callosal pioneer axons. Using a combination of mutant analysis and in vitro assays, we demonstrate that CC neurons are necessary for normal callosal axon navigation. They exert an attractive influence on callosal axons, in part via Semaphorin 3C and its receptor Neuropilin-1. By revealing a novel and essential role for these neuronal populations in the pathfinding of a major cerebral commissure, our study brings new perspectives to pathophysiological mechanisms altering CC formation.</p> <p>Author Summary</p> <p>The largest commissural tract in the human brain is the corpus callosum, with over 200 million callosal axons that channel information between the two cerebral hemispheres. Failure of the corpus callosum to form appropriately is observed in several human pathologies and can result from defects during different steps of development, including cell proliferation, cell migration, or axonal guidance. Studies to date suggest that glial cells are critical for the formation of the corpus callosum. In this study, we show that during embryonic development, the corpus callosum, which was considered a neuron-poor structure, is in fact transiently populated by numerous glutamatergic and GABAergic neurons. With the use of in vitro graft experiments and of various transgenic mice, we demonstrate that neurons of the corpus callosum are essential for the accurate navigation of callosal axons. Moreover, we discovered that the guidance factor Semaphorin 3C, which is expressed by corpus callosum neurons, acts through the neuropilin 1 receptor to orient axons crossing through the corpus callosum. The present work therefore gives new insights into the mechanisms involved in axon guidance and implies that transient neurons work together with their glial partners in guiding callosal axons.</p>

Supplementary Material for Towards a Taxonomy of Privacy Requirements Based on the LGPD and ISO/IEC 29100
<p><strong>Abstract:</strong><i> Ensuring compliance with data privacy principles imposed by current legislation is a challenge to be faced by software development teams since it requires adapting processes to achieve compliance with laws. This work proposes a taxonomy of privacy requirements based on the Brazilian General Data Protection Law (LGPD) and the ISO/IEC 29100 to support software development teams in achieving compliance with the law. A systematic literature review (SLR) was carried out to identify existing data privacy taxonomies in the literature, which identified 10 primary studies that served as the basis for the creation of our taxonomy. The proposed taxonomy is composed of 129 requirements, divided into 10 categories and 5 contexts. It was applied in the consent request process of the Open Banking Brazil (OPB) project, which shares users' data with their consent. Supplementary Material for: On the Challenges to Documenting Requirements in Agile Software Development: A Practitioners' Perspective
<p><strong>Abstract: </strong>Agile Software Development (ASD) is an iterative and incremental methodology designed to accelerate project deliveries. In this dynamic environment characterized by constant changes, the task of documenting requirements becomes increasingly challenging, leading to the emergence of the technical debt issue. This research involved a survey of 84 practitioners to identify the techniques and practices employed in documenting software requirements within ASD teams, as well as their perceptions of the documentation process and the challenges, regarding what factors influence it and its consequences. Our key findings indicate that user stories are the most commonly utilized technique by practitioners for documenting requirements. Furthermore, a deficient documentation process results in two primary consequences: rework and a knowledge deficit. To address these challenges, various techniques are implemented across different development phases, including requirement refactoring, documentation refinement meetings, and template reviews. Participants also emphasized the significance of having a requirements expert to enhance the documentation process and expressed uncertainty regarding the adequacy of their existing requirements documentation. This study highlights the growing issue of technical debt within ASD teams' documentation and requirements and raises awareness about the need to develop habits for documenting and maintaining up-to-date software requirements in agile projects.</p>

Understanding the Asian Water Tower requires a new precipitation observation strategy
<p>The Asian water tower (AWT) serves as the source of 10 major Asian river systems and supports the lives of ~2 billion people. Obtaining reliable precipitation data over AWT is a prerequisite for understanding the water cycle within this pivotal region. Here, we quantitatively reveal that the “observed” precipitation over the AWT is considerably underestimated in view of observational evidence from three water cycle components, namely, evapotranspiration, runoff and accumulated snow. We found that three paradoxes appear if the so-called “observed” precipitation is corrected, namely, actual evapotranspiration exceeding precipitation, unrealistically high runoff coefficients, and accumulated snow water equivalent exceeding contemporaneous precipitation. We then explained the cause of precipitation underestimation from instrumental error caused by wind-induced gauge undercatch and the representativeness error caused by sparse-uneven gauge density and complexity of local surface conditions. These findings require us to rethink previous results related to the water cycle, and the study then introduced potential solutions.</p> <p>This provides the main dataset used in this study, including the observed precipitation, evapotranspiration, runoff, and snow water equivalent across AWT.</p>
Cooperation in public goods game does not require assortment and depends on population density
<p>The threshold public goods game is one of the best-known models of nonlinear public goods dilemmas. Cooperators and defectors typically coexist in this game when the population is assumed to follow the so-called structured deme model. In this paper we develop a dynamical model of a general N-player game in which there is no deme structure: individuals interact with randomly chosen neighbours and selection occurs between randomly chosen pairs of indi- viduals. We show that in the deterministic limit the dynamics in this model leads to the same replicator dynamics as in the structured deme model, i.e. coexistence of cooperators and defectors is typical in threshold public goods game even when the population is completely well-mixed. We extend the model to study the effect of density dependence and density fluctuation on the dynamics. We show analytically and numerically that decreasing population density increases the equilibrium frequency of cooperators till the fixation of this strategy, but below a critical density coop- erators abruptly disappear from the population. Our numerical investigations show that weak density fluctuations enhance cooperation, while strong fluctuations suppress it.</p>

Ethical Requirements in the Age of Artificial Intelligence - Supplementary material
<p><strong>Context</strong>: Software developers and users are growing concerned about the ethical use of software, especially with Artificial Intelligence (AI). In this context, we investigated how ethical requirements can be elicited and incorporated into software development. <strong>Problem</strong>: The challenge is identifying and defining effective methods for eliciting and managing ethical requirements in software development. <strong>Solution</strong>: We conducted a Systematic Literature Review (SLR) to identify techniques, methods, processes, frameworks, and tools for eliciting, analyzing, and specifying ethical requirements. <strong>IS Theory</strong>: We explore the application of theories related to requirements engineering, ethics in technology, and data governance. It focuses, in particular, on ensuring that information systems comply with ethical and legal principles from the beginning of the development cycle. <strong>Method</strong>: Following the Kitchenham and Charters protocol, we conducted an SLR with stages of planning, conducting, and reporting the results. <strong>Summarization of Results</strong>: We have identified 46 primary studies. These studies address different approaches to eliciting ethical requirements, including techniques based on user stories, analysis of ethical guidelines, specific frameworks such as ECCOLA, and methods such as interviews and modeling. <strong>Contributions and Impact on the IS area</strong>: The report contributes to the field by consolidating existing practices in the literature regarding ethical requirements. It provides a comprehensive overview of the techniques and tools available for integrating ethical considerations into software systems and identifies gaps and opportunities for future research. The study significantly impacts the IS field by providing practical and theoretical guidelines for eliciting ethical requirements in information systems.</p>
