Seagrass production around artificial reefs is resistant to human stressors
<p>Primary production underpins most ecosystem services, including carbon sequestration and fisheries. Artificial reefs (ARs) are widely used for fisheries management. Research has shown that a mechanism by which AR in seagrass beds can support fisheries and carbon sequestration is through increasing primary production via fertilization from aggregating fish excretion. Seagrass beds are heavily affected by anthropogenic nutrient input and fishing that reduces nutrient input by consumers. The effect of these stressors is difficult to predict because impacts of simultaneous stressors are typically non-additive. We used a long-term experiment to identify the mechanisms by which simultaneous impacts of sewage enrichment and fishing alter seagrass production around ARs across non-orthogonal gradients in human-dominated and relatively unimpacted regions in Haiti and The Bahamas. Merging trait-based measures of seagrass and seagrass ecosystem processes, we found that ARs consistently enhanced per capita seagrass production and maintained ecosystem-scale production despite drastic shifts in controls on production from human stressors. Importantly, we also show that coupled human stressors on seagrass production around ARs were additive, contrasting expectations. These findings are encouraging for conservation because they indicate that seagrass ecosystems are highly resistant to coupled human stressors and that ARs promote ecosystem services even in human-dominated ecosystems.</p>

A simulated natural heatwave perturbs bumble bee immunity and resistance to infection
<p><span>As a consequence of ongoing climate change, heatwaves are predicted to increase in frequency, intensity, and duration in many regions. Such extreme events can shift organisms from thermal optima for physiology and behavior, with the thermal stress hypothesis predicting reduced performance at temperatures where the maintenance of biological functions is energetically costly. Performance includes the ability to resist biotic stressors, such as infectious diseases. Climate change is a proposed threat to native bee pollinators, directly and through indirect effects on floral resources, but the thermal stress hypothesis, particularly pertaining to disease resistance, has received limited attention. We exposed adult <em>Bombus impatiens</em> bumble bee workers to simulated, ecologically relevant heatwave or control thermal regimes and assessed longevity, immunity, and resistance to concurrent or future parasite infections. We demonstrate that survival and induced antibacterial immunity are reduced following heatwaves. Supporting that heatwave exposure compromised immunity, the cost of immune activation by a non-pathogenic elicitor was thermal regime dependent, with costs to long-term survival in control but not heatwave exposed bees. However, in the face of real infections, an inability to mount an optimal immune response will be detrimental, which was reflected by higher infections from trypanosome parasite exposure following the heatwave, relative to the control regime. These results demonstrate interactions between heatwave exposure and bumble bee performance, including immune and infection outcomes. Thus, the health of bumble bee pollinator populations may be affected through altered interactions with parasites and pathogens, in addition to other effects of extreme manifestations of climate change.</span></p>
Host-enemy interactions provide limited biotic resistance for a range-expanding species via reduced apparent competition
<p class="MsoNormal"><strong><span>Aim:</span></strong><span> As species' ranges shift poleward in response to anthropogenic change, they may lose antagonistic interactions if they move into less diverse communities, fail to interact with novel populations or species effectively, or if ancestral interacting populations or species fail to shift synchronously. We leveraged a poleward range expansion in a tractable insect host-enemy community to uncover mechanisms by which altered antagonistic interactions between native and recipient communities contributed to "high niche opportunities" (limited biotic resistance) for a range-expanding insect. </span></p> <p class="MsoNormal"><strong><span>Location:</span></strong><span> North America, Pacific Northwest</span></p> <p class="MsoNormal"><strong><span>Methods:</span></strong><span> We created quantitative insect host-enemy interaction networks by sampling oak gall wasps on 400 trees of a dominant oak species in the native and expanded range of a range-expanding gall wasp species. We compared host-enemy network structure between regions. We measured traits (phenology, morphology) of galls and interacting parasitoids, predicting greater trait divergence in the expanded range. We measured function relating to host control and explored if altered interactions and traits contributed to reduced function or biotic resistance.</span></p> <p class="MsoNormal"><strong><span>Results:</span></strong><span> Interaction networks had fewer species in the expanded range and lower complementarity of parasitoid assemblages among host species. While networks were more generalized, interactions with the range-expanding species were more specialized in the expanded range. Specialist enemies effectively tracked the range-expanding host, and there was reduced apparent competition with co-occurring hosts by shared generalist enemies. Phenological divergence of enemy assemblages interacting with the range-expanding and co-occurring hosts was greater in the expanded range, potentially contributing to weak apparent competition. Biotic resistance was lower in the expanded range, where fewer parasitoids emerged from galls of the range-expanding host.</span></p> <p class="MsoNormal"><strong><span>Main conclusions:</span></strong><span> Changes in interactions with generalist enemies created high niche opportunities, and limited biotic resistance, suggesting weak apparent competition may be a mechanism of enemy release for range-expanding insects embedded within generalist enemy networks.</span></p>

Evolution along allometric lines of least resistance: Morphological differentiation in Pristurus geckos
<p class="FirstParagraph"><span>Species living in distinct habitats often experience unique ecological selective pressures, which can drive phenotypic divergence. However, how ecophenotypic patterns are affected by allometric trends and trait integration levels is less well understood. Here we evaluate the role of allometry in shaping body size and body form diversity in <em>Pristurus</em> geckos utilizing differing habitats. We found that patterns of allometry and integration in body form were distinct in species with different habitat preferences, with ground-dwelling <em>Pristurus</em> displaying the most divergent allometric trend and high levels of integration. There was also strong concordance between intraspecific allometry across individuals and evolutionary allometry among species, revealing that differences in body form among individuals were predictive of evolutionary changes across the phylogeny at macroevolutionary scales. This suggested that phenotypic evolution occurred along allometric lines of least resistance, with allometric trajectories imposing a strong influence on the magnitude and direction of size and shape changes across the phylogeny. When viewed in phylomorphospace, the largest rock-dwelling species were most similar to the smallest ground-dwelling species, and vice versa. Thus, in <em>Pristurus</em>, phenotypic evolution along the differing habitat-based allometric trajectories resulted in similar body forms at differing body sizes in distinct ecological habitats.</span></p>
Dataset - Speeding up high-throughput characterization of materials libraries by active learning: autonomous electrical resistance measurements
<p>With the trend towards multinary materials and the associated increase in measurement time, there is a clear need for increasing the efficiency of measurement procedures. In systems requiring long materials characterization times, the implementation of active learning can help decreasing the measurement duration significantly. This dataset is part of the publication in Digital Discovery under the same title and holds the algorithm as well as the data used to test its performance. The algorithm leverages an active learning approach with a Gaussian process model capable of selecting the next measurement area of a library of materials based on the highest uncertainty. Ten materials libraries were manufactured by magnetron sputtering, the composition was measured with EDX and the electrical resistance was measured using the described test stand. The code can also be found on <a href="https://gitlab.ruhr-uni-bochum.de/fthelen/auto-resist-meas">Gitlab</a>.</p>

<p>This upload provides Open Data associated with the publication "Prognostic value of the De Ritis ratio for overall survival in patients with metastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer undergoing [<sup>177</sup>Lu]Lu-PSMA-617 radioligand therapy" by Gaal S <em>et al.</em> (2023).</p> <p>The upload contains the anonymized dataset of 91 patients analyzed in this publication with all variables that are required to reproduce the results.</p> <p>However, to fully comply with requirements for data anonymization, the patients' age was categorized into groups spanning 5 years each. A dataset with the age variable in exact years can be obtained from the corresponding author (julian.rogasch@charite.de) upon reasonable request.</p> <p>Besides the dataset, this upload provides a dictionary to explain all variables and their categories.</p>
