Students' perceptions and attitudes towards science in PERFORM: Survey template

This document contains the survey instrument developed to measure the impact of the PERFORM project RRI approach in students’ attitudes and pro-scientific behaviour and learning. It was a self-administered questionnaire combining close-ended with some open-ended qüestions. It was handled to students before and after the development of PERFORM participatory workshops to the participant students and a control group in order to:

Obtain basic demographic data (those compatible with PERFORM ethical guidelines)

Explore initial attitudes and perceptions towards science and STEM careers, with an emphasis on RRI-related dimensions (gender stereotypes, ethical issues, inclusiveness, engagement and critical/creative thinking) and potential changes after the implementation of participative performances (PERSEIAS in PERFORM jergon)

Explore participants’ perceptions towards the PERSEIAS process, also as an input to inform the design of focus groups

Expert-based literature review on RRI indicators for science education assessment: PERFORM analysis matrix

The document contains the main variables and categories of analysis of the expert-based literature review conducted as part of the assessment impact developed in the PERFORM project. This literature review globally aimed to identify and characterize assessment frameworks used in the context of science learning and engagement with young people. Specifically, it examined the operationalization of: i) RRI values and process requirements, ii) transversal competences, iii) experiential aspects, and iv) cognitive aspects. In doing that assessment gaps and challenges where identified relevant to the context of PERFORM and, more broadly, to the development of science education assessments incorporating the RRI dimension. By assessment framework we refer to a set of interlinked criteria, practices and concepts providing a systematic way of data collection, analysis and interpretation to the study of science learning and engagement. The template for data collection was organised in different sections approaching the following specific review questions and sub-questions:

What assessment frameworks can be identified in the selected sample?

On which disciplines are they based?

What is being assessed in these frameworks?

How it is the evaluation conducted?

What are the challenges of each approach for assessing science learning and engagement?

How are transversal competences, RRI and emotional factors included in these frameworks?

How are these notions operationalised?

What kinds of evaluation indicators are applied for data collection, if any?

BRAIN Journal-Cursor Movement – a Valuable Indicator in Intelligent System Design-Figure 1. Science branches involved in translating product features to human needs

Approach notwithstanding, designing product features involves basically a two-step process: (a) detecting and recognizing emotional information and (b) exhibiting a suitable reaction to the previously considered input. Since needs are reflected in the emotional impact, a method to measure the emotions is necessary (Abraham & Michie, 2008) to correctly assess the impact. Referring strictly to a software product, in order to implement the capability to sense the users’ emotional state, the first step should be developing an affective database (Tao & Tan, 2005), to allow correct identification of the affective status. This results in a translation between the affective status of the user and the computer, therefore allowing the program to process the user emotion just like any other input, successfully “digitizing” emotion.

BRAIN Journal-Personality Questionnaires as a Basis for Improvement of University Courses in Applied Computer Science and Informatics-Figure 5. Hierarchical clustering by scores across the EPQ–R scales for data about all the participants

The clusters were generated using an implementation of a hierarchical clustering algorithm available in the R environment (R, n.d.). The top three clusters were extracted from a hierarchical cluster tree shown in Figure 5, while the color of data points in the visualization shown in figure 4 was determined based on cluster labels. Hierarchical clusters could be used when investigating which students in the analyzed sample share similar personality traits. This could be especially useful for smaller student groups as the teacher may manually inspect the cluster tree and its leaves, which designate individual students. For instance, there are three students in cluster 3, who are represented within the tree in Figure 5 by identifiers 14, 22, and 24. The students with identifiers 14 and 22 are more closely linked and more similar to each other than to the student with identifier 24.
