International Long-Term Ecological Research Network (ILTER) Atmospheric Deposition and Stream Nitrogen Synthesis

We identified variables controlling stream nitrogen concentrations and fluxes, and how they have changed over time, by synthesizing 20 time series ranging from 5 to 51 years of data collected from forest and grassland dominated watersheds across Europe, North America, and East Asia and across four climate types (tropical, temperate, Mediterranean, and boreal) using the International Long-Term Ecological Research Network. We found declining trends in bulk ammonium and nitrate deposition, with ammonium contributing significantly more to atmospheric nitrogen deposition over time. Among sites, there were significant positive relationships between (1) precipitation and stream ammonium and nitrate fluxes and (2) atmospheric nitrogen inputs and stream nitrogen concentrations and fluxes. There were no significant relationships between air temperature and stream nitrogen export. Our long-term data shows that although nitrogen deposition is declining over time, atmospheric nitrogen inputs and precipitation remain the main predictors for nitrogen exported from forested and grassland watersheds. Overall, we also demonstrate that long-term monitoring provides understanding of ecosystems and biogeochemical cycling that would not be possible with short-term studies alone. SOils DAta Harmonization database (SoDaH): an open-source synthesis of soil data from research networks

This SOils DAta Harmonization (SoDaH) database is designed to bring together soil carbon data from diverse research networks into a harmonized dataset that can be used for synthesis activities and model development. The research network sources for SoDaH span different biomes and climates, encompass multiple ecosystem types, and have collected data across a range of spatial, temporal, and depth gradients. The rich data sets assembled in SoDaH consist of observations from monitoring efforts and long-term ecological experiments. The SoDaH database also incorporates related environmental covariate data pertaining to climate, vegetation, soil chemistry, and soil physical properties. The data are harmonized and aggregated using open-source code that enables a scripted, repeatable approach for soil data synthesis.

Elucidation of the Atroposelectivity in the Synthesis of Axially Chiral Thiohydantoin Derivatives

<p>Recently, Sarigul and Dogan&nbsp;have synthesized a number of enantiomerically enriched axially chiral atropoisomeric 2-thiohydantoins by the reaction of L-amino acid ester salts and <em>o</em>-aryl isothiocyanates in the presence of triethyl amine (TEA) in dichloromethane. The nonaxially chiral derivative 5-methyl-3-phenyl-2-thiohydantoin gave a racemic product whereas the axially chiral 5-methyl-3-<em>o</em>-bromophenyl-2-thiohydantoin was less prone to racemize at C<sub>5</sub> of the heterocyclic ring. In this study, we present a computational study (M06-2X/6-311+G(d,p) for C, H, O, N and S; M06-2X/6-311++G(3df,3pd) for Br) in order to propose plausible mechanisms for the racemization and cyclization steps for &nbsp;2-thiohydantoin derivatives. The study includes rationalization based on steric as well as the electrostatic effects to elucidate the epimerization differences at C<sub>5</sub>.</p>

Her research primarily focuses on methods used in the development, evaluation and implementation of health behaviour change interventions, particularly in relation to the treatment and prevention of chronic disease. She has specific expertise in implementation science, evidence synthesis, process evaluation and exploring the fidelity and adaptation of behaviour change interventions.</p> <p>Elaine is a member of the <a href="https://www.hrb.ie/">Health Research Board (HRB)</a> <a href="https://hrbopenresearch.org/advisors">Open Research National Steering Committee</a>, Co-Chair of the <a href="https://ehps.net/special-interest-groups/">European Health Psychology Society Open Science Special Interest Group</a> and a Catalyst for the Berkeley Initiative for Transparency in the Social Sciences (<a href="https://www.bitss.org/">BITSS</a>). Data from: A synthesis of the coast-wide decline in survival of west coast Chinook salmon (Oncorhynchus tshawytscha, Salmonidae)

<p>We collated smolt-to-adult return rate (SAR) data for Chinook salmon from all available regions of the Pacific coast of North America to examine the large-scale patterns of salmon survival.  For consistency, our analyses primarily used coded wire tag-based (CWT) SAR estimates.  Survival collapsed over the past half century by roughly a factor of three to ca. 1% for many regions.  Within the Columbia River, the SARs of Snake River populations, often singled out as exemplars of poor survival, are unexceptional and in fact higher than estimates reported from many other regions of the west coast lacking dams.  Given the seemingly congruent decline in SARs to similar levels, the notion that contemporary survival is driven primarily by broader oceanic factors rather than local factors should be considered.  Ambitious Columbia River rebuilding targets may be unachievable because other regions with nearly pristine freshwater conditions, such as SE Alaska and northern BC, also largely fail to reach these levels.  Passive integrated transponder (PIT) tag-based SAR estimates available for Columbia River basin populations are generally consistent with CWT findings; however, PIT tag-based SARs are not adjusted for harvest which compromises their intended use because harvest rates are large and variable. More attention is needed on how SARs should be quantified and how rebuilding targets are defined.  We call for a systematic review by funding agencies to assess consistency and comparability of the SAR data generated and to further assess the implications of survival falling to similar levels in most regions of the west coast.</p>

Data from: Cu-Al mixed oxide-catalysed multicomponent synthesis of gluco- and allofuranose-linked 1,2,3-triazole derivatives

<p><span>A series of carbohydrate linked-1,2,3-triazole derivatives were synthetized in good yields from glucofuranose and allofuranose diacetonides using as key step a three-component 1,3-dipolar azide-alkyne cycloaddition catalyzed by a Cu-Al mixed oxide. In this multicomponent reaction, Cu-Al mixed oxide/sodium ascorbate system serves as highly reactive, recyclable and efficient heterogeneous catalyst for regioselective synthesis of 1,4-disubstituted 1,2,3-triazoles. The reported protocol has significant advantages over classical CuI/DIPEA or CuSO<sub>4</sub>/sodium ascorbate conditions in terms of efficiency and reduced synthetic complexity. In addition, the selective deprotection of synthesized di-<i>O</i>-isopropylidene derivatives was also carried out leading to the corresponding mono-<i>O</i>-isopropylidene products in moderate yields. Some of the synthesized triazole glycoconjugates were tested for their <em>in vitro</em> antimicrobial activity using the disk diffusion method against Gram-positive bacteria (<i>Staphylococcus aureus</i> and <i>Bacillus subtilis</i>), Gram-negative bacteria (<i>Escherichia coli</i> and <i>Pseudomonas aeruginosa</i>), as well as fungus (<i>Aspergillus niger</i>) and yeast (<i>Candida utilis</i>). The results revealed that these compounds exhibit moderate to good antimicrobial activity mainly against Gram-negative bacteria. </span></p>

Data from: Optimisation of biogenic synthesis of silver nanoparticles from flavonoid-rich Clinacanthus nutans leaf and stem aqueous extracts

<p>BACKGROUND: Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) are widely used in food industries, biomedical, dentistry, catalysis, diagnostic biological probes, and sensors. The use of plant extract for AgNPs synthesis eliminates the process of maintaining cell culture and the process could be scaled up under a non-aseptic environment. The purpose of this study is to determine the classes of phytochemicals, to biosynthesise and characterise the AgNPs using Clinacanthus nutans leaf and stem extracts. In this study, AgNPs was synthesised from the aqueous extracts of C. nutans leaves and stems through a non-toxic, cost effective and eco-friendly method.</p> <p>RESULTS: The formation of AgNPs was confirmed by UV-Vis spectroscopy, and the size of AgNP-L (leaf) and AgNP-S (stem) were 114 and 129 nm, respectively. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) analysis showed spherical nanoparticles with AgNP-L and AgNP-S ranging from 10-300 nm and 10-180 nm; with zeta potentials of AgNP-L and AgNP-S at -42.8 and -43.9 mV, respectively. XRD analysis matched the face-centred cubic structure of silver and was capped with bioactive compounds. FTIR analysis revealed the presence of few functional groups of phenolic and flavonoid compounds. These functional groups act as reducing agents in AgNPs synthesis.</p> <p>CONCLUSION: This result showed that the biogenically synthesised nanoparticles reduced silver ions to silver nanoparticles in aqueous condition and the AgNPs formed were stable and less toxic.</p>
