Data from: Larval dispersal and fishing pressure influence recruitment in a coral reef fishery
<ol> <li><span>Understanding larval connectivity patterns in exploited fishes is a fundamental prerequisite for developing effective management strategies and assessing the vulnerability of a fishery to recruitment overfishing and localised extinction. To date however, researchers have not considered how regional variations in fishing pressure also influence recruitment. </span></li> <li><span>We used genetic parentage analyses and modelling to infer the dispersal patterns of bumphead parrotfish (<i>Bolbometopon muricatum</i>) larvae in the Kia fishing grounds, Isabel Province, Solomon Islands. We then extrapolated our Kia dispersal model to a regional scale by mapping the available nursery and adult habitat for <i>B. muricatum</i> in six regions in the western Solomon Islands, and estimated the relative abundance of adult <i>B. muricatum</i> populations in each of these regions based on available adult habitat and historical and current fishing pressure. </span></li> <li><span><span>Parentage analysis identified 67 juveniles that were the offspring of parents sampled in the Kia fishing grounds. A </span>fitted larval dispersal kernel<span> predicted that 50% of larvae settled within 30 km of their parents, and 95% settled within 85 km of their parents. After accounting for unsampled adults, our model predicted that 34% of recruitment to the Kia fishery was spawned locally. Extrapolating the spatial resolution of the model revealed that a high proportion of the larvae recruiting into the Kia fishing grounds came from nearby regions that had abundant adult populations. </span>Other islands in the archipelago provided few recruits to the Kia fishing grounds, reflecting the greater distances to these islands and lower adult abundances in some regions. </span></li> <li> <em>Synthesis and <a>applications</a></em><em>: </em>This study shows how recruitment into a commercial reef fishery is influenced by larval dispersal patterns and regional variations in historical fishing pressure. The scales of larval connectivity observed for <i>B. muricatum</i> indicate that recruitment overfishing is unlikely if there are lightly exploited reefs up to 85 km away from a heavily fished region, and that small marine protected areas (MPAs) are insufficient to protect this species. We recommend greater efforts to understand the interactions between larval dispersal and gradients of fishing pressure, as this will enable the development of tailored fisheries management <a>strategies.</a> </li> </ol>

<p>Populations of the northern bay scallop, <em>Argopecten</em> <em>irradians</em> <em>irradians</em>, across the northeast US have recently experienced severe declines. Here we used high-resolution satellite-based temperature records, long-term temperature and dissolved oxygen records, field and laboratory experiments, and high-frequency measures of scallop cardiac activity in an ecosystem setting to quantify decadal summer warming and assess the vulnerability of northern bay scallops to thermal- and hypoxic-stress across their geographic distribution. This set of files contains the raw data analyzed for this study. The data are grouped into relevant subfolders: Commercial Landings Data; Field Deployment Data; Gonad Index Data; Laboratory Data; Optical Infrared Sensor Data; Remote Sensing Data.</p>
Reproduction ecology of an emerging fishery resource, the amphibious mudskipper Periophthalmus chrysospilos, in the Mekong Delta
<p>The Gold-Spotted mudskipper<i> Periophthalmus chrypsospilos</i> is a potential aquarium pet living in the mudflats in coastal and estuarine regions, but populations of this mudskipper within the Mekong Delta are facing extirpation risks due to indiscriminate harvesting for the growing aquarium and food-fish trade. Consequently, this research aims to provide first reproductive references such as spawning type and season, length at first mature, batch fecundity, being used in conservation and artificially propagation research. Analysis results from 1,031 individuals (523 males and 508 females) reveal that the sex ratio of total individuals recorded is 1:1 (523 males and 508 females) (<i>c<sup>2</sup></i>=0.22, <i>p</i>=0.64). The <i>GSI</i> values are found to exhibit a non-normal distribution (Shapiro-Wilk Test, NJ=0.87, <i>p</i><0.01) and change by gender (Mann-Whitney U, <i>Z</i>=27.04, <i>p</i><0.01), season (<i>Z</i>=6.17, <i>p</i><0.01) and site (Kruskal-Wallis H, <i>c<sup>2</sup></i>=40.72,<i> p<</i>0.01). A combination of <i>GSIs</i> and the monthly appearance of mature gonads suggest that this species reproduces throughout the year, with a peak from July to October. This species exhibits sexual and spatial variation in the size at first maturity (<i>L<sub>m</sub></i>) as <i>L<sub>m</sub></i> is 6.2-8.6 cm in males and 6.4-7.3 cm in females. The batch fecundity (<i>F</i>=2,614 to 23,465 eggs/female) exhibits non-normal distribution (Shapiro-Wilk Test, NJ=0.96, <i>p</i><0.01) and varies with site (Kruskal-Wallis H, <i>c<sup>2</sup> </i>=35.55,<i> p<</i>0.01), reaching the highest point at Dam Doi, Ca Mau (13,336±1,279 SE) and the lowest point at Tran De, Soc Trang (6,654±851 SE). In addition, <i>F</i> is directly proportional to body size due to high determination values of relationships between <i>F</i> and fish size (<i>r<sup>2</sup></i>>0.64 for all cases). Information derived on the reproductive biology of this species can inform its conservation, sustainable exploitation, and ex-situ propagation.</p>

Chinook Salmon Fat Meter Measurements from the 2020 Albion Test Fishery
<p>Distell fat meter (model FFM-692) measurements were taken from Chinook salmon, Oncorhynchus tshawytscha, collected in 2020 near Maple Ridge, BC on the Fraser River as part of the Fisheries and Oceans Canada-run Chinook test fishery. The test fishery completes two drifted gill net sets per day from mid-April to November. Salmon length and weight measurements were also collected on board the gill net vessel, and a scale sample was taken for genetic stock identification. Chinook were identified to management unit (MU), groupings of Chinook conservation units categorized by shared life history traits. Fat meter measurements were converted to whole body lipid content measurements using a calibration described in the Lerner & Hunt [2023]. Data was collected from 1,566 individuals and was used to determine MU-specific Chinook lipid content.</p>

The effect of prey abundance and fisheries on the survival, reproduction, and social structure of killer whales (Orcinus orca) at subantarctic Marion Island
<p>Most marine apex predators are keystone species that fundamentally influence their ecosystems through cascading top-down processes. Reductions in worldwide predator abundances, attributed to environmental and anthropogenic-induced changes to prey availability and negative interactions with fisheries, can have far-reaching ecosystem impacts. We tested whether the survival of killer whales (<em>Orcinus orca</em>) observed at Marion Island in the Southern Indian Ocean correlated with social structure and prey variables (direct measures of prey abundance, Patagonian toothfish fishery effort, and environmental proxies) using multistate models of capture-recapture data spanning 12 years (2006 to 2018). We also tested the effect of these same variables on killer whale social structure and reproduction measured over the same period. Indices of social structure had the strongest correlation with survival, with higher sociality associated with increased survival probability. Survival was also positively correlated to Patagonian toothfish fishing effort during the previous year, suggesting that fishery-linked resource availability is an important determinant of survival. No correlation between survival and environmental proxies of prey abundance was found. At-island prey availability influenced the social structure of Marion Island killer whales, but none of the variables explained variability in reproduction. Future increases in legal fishing activity may benefit this population of killer whales through the artificial provisioning of resources they provide.</p>
