Medieval Tombstone, Montemor-o-Novo
Tombstone in semi-rectangular shape, made out of marble, with an orbicular cross, usually known as the "Templar cross". This piece is actually in deposit at the Museum of the Convento de S. Domingos, in Montemor-o-Novo. Provenance: This piece comes from the Castle of Montemor-o-Novo, probably from the archaeological deposit of the Church of Santiago, which existed there until the 1980s. In the medieval village inside the fortified walls there were four parish churches (Santa Maria da Vila, Santa Maria do Bispo, Santiago and S. João Baptista), and cemetaries were built around each one. During the Middle Ages it was customary to mark the graves with tombstones, which were nothing more than slabs of stone placed standing straight, on which were engraved religious symbols and on which sometimes was indicated the profession of the deceased. This set of stelae comes safely from the ancient medieval cemeteries inside the castle, although it is not possible to determine to which church (s) it was associated. Latin inscribed Medieval standingstone, Yarrow
Canmore 53078 53078NGR: NT 34805 27441 Just over 1.5m high the standing stone bears an important six line Latin inscription, fairly roughly carved and in parts badly weathered. The letters are mainly Roman capitals, irregular and sprawling; the words are badly set out and carelessly written! Certain letters, however, provide parallels with stones elsewhere, notably in Wales and Cornwall, and help date it to the early 6th century. A brief translation would run: ''This (is) the everlasting memorial In (this) place (lie) the most famous princes Nudus and Dumnogenus In this tomb lie the two sons of Liberalis". Medieval Church, Calatrava la Nueva, Spain
Medieval church located inside the impressive Fortress of Calatrava La Nueva in Aldea del Rey (Ciudad Real, Spain). The castle/convent of Calatrava La Nueva was built in the 13th century to serve as the seat of the powerful Order of Calatrava and today it is one of the most important castles in Spain. Inside, a large 3-nave church was built in an artistic style that mixes elements of Romanesque, Gothic and influences of Islamic art. This mixture of styles, but also of constructive and decorative techniques, make the church of Calatrava La Nueva a unique place. We want to publicly thank the collaboration of the Castilla-La Mancha regional government, Aldea del Rey City Council, and the archaeologist Ana Segovia Fernández, for the assistance and faciliation they have given provided.
