Low Ti Additions to Stabilize Ru‐Ir Electrocatalysts for the Oxygen Evolution Reaction

<p>Abstract:</p> <p>Anodic oxygen evolution reaction (OER) challenges large scale application of proton exchange membrane water electrolyzers (PEMWE) due to sluggish kinetics, high overpotential and extremely corrosive environment. While Ir oxides currently provide the best balance between activity and stability, the scarcity of Ir and corresponding high market price lead to poor cost-benefit factors. Mixing Ir with more stable non-precious Ti reduces the noble metal loading and may implicate stabilization, while addition of more catalytically active Ru ensures a high reaction rate. Here, we examine the activity-stability behavior of Ru-Ir-Ti thin film material libraries with low Ti content under the OER conditions. The high sensitivity to the dissolution of the individual alloy components was achieved by using online and offline inductively coupled plasma mass<br>spectrometry (ICP-MS) analysis. Our data reveal that even low Ti additions improve the stability of Ru-Ir catalysts without sacrificing activity. In particular, 5 at. % of Ti enable stability increase of Ir in the Ru-Ir catalyst by a factor of 3. Moreover, this catalyst exhibits higher activity compared to the Ti-free Ru-Ir alloys with similar Ir content. Observed activity-stability trends are discussed in light of X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy data.</p>

Reaction times of spatially coherent and incoherent signals in a word recognition task

<p>Using conventional sound design, the audio signal in virtual reality applications is often rendered as a static stereophonic signal. It is accompanied by a visual signal that allows for interactive behavior such as looking around. In the current test, the influence of spatial offset between the audio and visual signals is investigated using reaction time measurements in a word recognition task. The audio-visual offset is introduced by a video presented at horizontal offset angles between 21, accompanied with a static central audio. Measurements are compared to reaction times from a test where both audio and visual signal are presented with the same angle. Results show that audio-visual offsets between 10 and 20 cause significant differences in reaction time compared to spatially matched presentation.</p> <p>This dataset provides the files used for creating these results, such as video files, MaxMSP patches, Analyses in MATLAB</p>

<p>We make available here the simulation output files used in the paper &quot;Gas accretion damped by dust back-reaction at the snowline&quot; by G&aacute;rate et al. (submitted to A&amp;A). The simulation shows the gas and dust evolution of a protoplanetry disk around the snowline, considering the dust back-reaction.</p> <p>The simulations were performed using TwoPopPy (Birnstiel et al, 2012) to solve the advection of gas and dust.</p> <p>Each file corresponds to one simulation. Each files contains the radial profile of the physical properties at different snapshots.</p> <p>The simulation data is saved in numpy format. We include the jupyter notebook as a guide of how to read and plot the simulation files.</p>

From individuals to populations: How intraspecific competition shapes thermal reaction norms

1. Most ectotherms follow the temperature-size rule (TSR): in cold environments individuals grow slowly but reach a large asymptotic length. Intraspecific competition can induce plastic changes of growth rate and asymptotic length and competition may itself be modulated by temperature. 2. Our aim is to disentangle the joint effects of temperature and intraspecific competition on growth rate and asymptotic length. 3. We used two distinct clonal lineages of the Collembola Folsomia candida, to describe thermal reaction norms of growth rate, asymptotic length and reproduction over 6 temperatures between 6°C and 29°C. In parallel, we measured the long-term size-structure and dynamics of populations reared under the same temperatures to measure growth rates and asymptotic lengths in populations and to quantify the joint effects of competition and temperature on these traits. 4. We show that intraspecific competition modulates the temperature-size rule. In dense populations there is a direct negative effect of temperature on asymptotic length, but there is no temperature dependence of the growth rate, the dominant factor regulating growth being competition. The two lineages responded differently to the joint effects of temperature and competition on growth and asymptotic size and these genetic differences have marked effects on population structure along our temperature gradient. 5. Our results reinforce the idea that the TSR response of ectotherms can be modulated by biotic and abiotic stressors when studied in non-optimal laboratory experiments. Untangling complex interactions between environment and demography will help to understand how size will respond to environmental change and how climate change may influence population size structure.
