Radiocarbon dates for an elevational gradient by Toolik Lake, North Slope of Alaska 1988.

Two cores of peat, approximately 15 cm2, were cut to the depth at which mineral soils were encountered at each site. The sites of sampling correspond to an elevational gradient leading from the lakeside upslope to the begining of the water track at the ridgetop. Each sample was divided into three sections, one section to be used for radiocarbon age , one for loss on ignition, and the remainder to be kept for future needs.

Samples are identified by type, category, and a short description. Data include isotope values, carbon and nitrogen concentrations, and C:N ratios of samples.

Soil microarthropod density data for saddle snowfence and S slope of Niwot Ridge, 1992 - 1993.

These data were used in this publication: O'Lear, H.A., and T.R. Seastedt. 1994. Landscape patterns of litter decomposition in alpine tundra. Oecologia 99: 95-101. doi: 10.1007/BF00317088 Microarthropod densities in the upper 5 cm of soil were estimated for different alpine communities on Niwot Ridge in the Front Range of Colorado. Densitites were higher than previously reported and averaged 111,200 individualsgm2. Acari dominated this group and composed 80-90% of the fauna; Collembola composed an average of 15%. Oribatid mites composed 23-58% of total densities, while Prostigmatid mites composed 32-54%. The relative abundance of the Oribatid and Prostigmatid mites varied significantly across the landscape, with Prostigmatids more abundant in the xeric sites. Composition of the detritus-based food web appear to change substantially across the snow depth gradient found in the alpine tundra. NOTE: The LTER data portal display does not display important maintenance/log information or other EML metadata features. Please be sure to view the EML file (a text file that contains XML tags) which is included in the zip archive (click on "Download zip archive") pertaining to each dataset. Soil nitrous oxide and methane data for South slope of Niwot Ridge, 1992.

To determine the effect of increased nitrogen availability on fluxes of N2O and CH4 from alpine soils, we measured fluxes of these gases from fertilized and unfertilized soils in two alpine plant communities differing in net primary productivity, soil organic matter quality, and moisture. Five fertilized and 5 unfertilized plots within each community type were sampled. In the dry meadow community, the addition of nitrogen resulted in a 22-fold increase in N2O emission, while in the wet meadow, we observed a 45-fold increase in N2O emission rates. Methane uptake in the dry meadow community was reduced 52% by fertilization. However, net CH4 production occurred in all of the wet meadow plots and emission rates were not significantly affected by fertilization. Net nitrification rates were higher in dry meadow fertilized plots than in non-fertilized plots throughout the growing season. Net mineralization rates in fertilized dry meadow plots were higher than those in non-fertilized plots during the latter half of the growing season. Carbon to nitrogen ratios and amounts of total soil organic nitrogen in both the wet and dry meadow were not significantly affected by fertilization.
