Sediment accumulation rate data aggregated from publications describing research conducted in South Florida on coastal wetlands prior to 2022

Wetland sediment accumulation rate data were harvested from publications describing research conducted in the Southeast Saline Everglades, Northeast Florida Bay, the Lower Florida Keys, Southwest Everglades National Park, Ten Thousand Island National Wildlife Refuge, and Rookery Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve. The data were organized into three categories based on the method by which they were calculated: lump sum, core section interval, Sediment Elevation Table Marker Horizon. The data were assembled by Dr. Randall W. Parkinson as part of his research on the resiliency of coastal wetlands to accelerating sea-level rise.

Data from: Attack and aggregation of a major squash pest: parsing the role of plant chemistry and beetle pheromones across spatial scales

<p>1. Successful management of insect crop pests requires an understanding of the cues and spatial scales at which they function to affect rates of attack of preferred and non-preferred host plants. A long-standing conceptual framework in insect-plant ecology posits that there is hierarchical structure spanning host location, acceptance, and attack that could be exploited for integrated pest management.</p> <p>2. We investigated how plant- and insect-derived chemical cues affect successive decisions of host choice in aggregating insects, and tested predictions in the Cucurbita pepo - Acalymma vittatum system. Acalymma vittatum is an aggregating specialist beetle pest that strongly prefers zucchini (C. p. pepo) to summer squash (C. p. ovifera), two independent domesticates of C. pepo. We hypothesized that subspecies-specific plant traits, especially volatile cues, interact with the male-produced aggregation pheromone to amplify beetle preference for C. p. pepo.</p> <p>3. Differential beetle attack of C. pepo subspecies in the field is not determined by plant traits that affect host finding or differential aggregation due to pheromones: across two years, beetles had strong density-dependent attraction to both subspecies when male beetles were feeding, and no interactions between plant volatiles and the male-produced pheromone were detected. In absence of male pheromone emission, beetles were equally unattracted to plants with or without beetle feeding.</p> <p>4. In contrast, plant traits that mediate insect acceptance appear to underlie differences in preference. At a local scale, beetles did not accept and emigrated from C. p. ovifera compared to C. p. pepo. Distinct volatile emissions were observed between subspecies, but further work is needed to identify if these volatiles promote emigration.</p> <p>5. Synthesis and applications: By dissecting pest preference during successive host choice decisions, we isolated a trait with implications for pest management. Beetles on cucurbits can be managed by employing cultivars with differential susceptibility (e.g. trap cropping), and the mechanistic knowledge presented here informs best practices and limitations for on-farm applications. More broadly, pest management in diversified cropping systems can be enhanced through understanding how plant preference gradients affect herbivore movement and behavior, and plant breeders can target traits to reduce herbivory in such systems.</p>

Assessment of Compatibility of Mineral Aggregates and Binders Used In Highway Construction and Maintenance Projects

<p>Stripping and delamination have been deemed as some of the major premature pavement distresses to most state Departments of Transportations (DOTs) and highway agencies including the Arkansas Department of Transportation (ARDOT). It is believed that the poor compatibility between asphalt binders and aggregates is one of the major reasons behind this. This study aims to analyze the compatibility of selected asphalt binders and aggregates used in Arkansas. Asphalt binders used in this study include PG 64-22, PG 70-22, and PG 76-22; each prepared from two different crude courses. Additionally, four different types of aggregates (sandstone, limestone, gravel, and dolomite) from four different quarries in Arkansas were evaluated in the laboratory. Selected physical and mechanical properties of the aggregates, rheological properties of the asphalt binders, surface free energy (SFE) measurements of the binders and aggregates, atomic force microscopy (AFM) analyses of binders, and limited laboratory and field performance of asphalt mixture samples were evaluated to determine the compatibility between the asphalt binders and aggregates. The findings of this study are expected to help pavement researchers and highway professionals to find suitable asphalt binder-aggregate combinations for constructing the durable pavements.</p>

Staphylococcus aureus phenol soluble modulin aggregation kinetics

<p><span>The infective ability of the </span>opportunistic pathogen <i><span>S</span>taphylococcus<span> aureus</span></i><span>, recognized as the most frequent cause of biofilm-associated infections, is associated with biofilm mediated resistance to host immune response. Phenol-soluble modulins (PSM) comprise the structural scaffold of <i>S. aureus</i> biofilms through self-assembly into functional amyloids, but the role of individual PSMs during biofilm formation remains poorly understood and the </span>molecular pathways of PSM self-assembly have yet to be identified<span>. Here, we demonstrate high degree of cooperation between individual PSMs during functional amyloid formation. PSMα3 initiates the aggregation, forming unstable aggregates capable of seeding other PSMs resulting in stable amyloid structures. Using chemical kinetics we dissect the molecular mechanism of aggregation of individual PSMs showing that PSMα1, PSMα3 and PSM</span><span>β</span><span>1 display secondary nucleation whereas PSM</span><span>β</span><span>2 aggregates through primary nucleation and elongation. Our findings suggest that the various PSMs have evolved to ensure fast and efficient biofilm formation through cooperation between individual peptides.</span></p>

Web wars: Males of the golden orb-web spider invest more in fights for mated and aggregated females

<p>In addition to resource value, the cost of finding mates may affect how much males invest in fights for females. The cost of finding females may be imposed through natural factors extrinsic to males, such as female spatial distribution and predation pressure, which can be challenging to simulate in laboratory conditions. Therefore, studies under natural conditions may be suitable for understanding how the costs of finding mating partners affect male investment in fights. We used the spider <i>Trichonephila clavipes </i>to evaluate the hypotheses that males in field conditions invest more in contests for access to (1) unmated and (2) more fecund females, and (3) when access to females is harder. To test these hypotheses, we recorded the occurrence, duration and escalation of induced contests between males located in webs of females that differed in reproductive status (estimated by female life stage), fecundity (estimated by female abdominal area) and spatial distribution (i.e. isolated or aggregated with webs of other females). The occurrence and duration of contests were unrelated to female value or search costs. However, the probability for escalation was higher when males were fighting for adult (and probably mated) females. We also found that males tended to start a contest more often in aggregated webs. These results indicate that males of <i>T. clavipes</i> adjust investment in contests, but contrarily to what we expected. We suggest males invest more in contests for adult females because they are defending females that they previously fertilized to avoid sperm competition.</p>

Hump-shaped relationship between aggregation tendency and body size within fish populations

<p>A distribution with high spatial variability may impair the bet-hedging capacity of a population, threatening population sustainability. Although the association between aggregation and life history traits of a species (e.g. body size) has been documented, the relationship between aggregation and size within a population has rarely been explored. As selective over-fishing may induce size truncation in the targeted stocks,it is critical to understand if such a truncation also undermines the distribution patterns of the population. In this study, we examined if and how the 'aggregation tendency' varies among different size classes of a population. Aggregation tendency was quantified as the exponent b of Taylor's power law (<em>V</em> = <em>a</em> × <em>M<sup>b</sup></em>), which measures the change in spatial variance (<em>V</em>) with the mean abundance (<em>M</em>) of a population. We estimated b by size class for each of the nine commercially important fish species in the North Sea, using ICES survey data from 1991 to 2015. Our study found that the relationship between b and body size within a population is hump-shaped, with a peak slightly larger than the 50% mature length of the species. This result indicates larger adults in a population tend to distribute less heterogeneously when abundance increases, suggesting that larger size classes play a critical role in reducing the variability of population distribution. Our findings highlight the importance of considering the combined effects of fishing-induced size truncation and changes in aggregation patterns in fishery management. That is, maintaining the size and spatial structure for the target stocks of selective fisheries is critical for the sustainability of the populations.</p>

Cover crops improve soil structure and change OC distribution in aggregate fractions

Protists regulate microbially-mediated organic carbon turnover in soil aggregates

<p>Soil protists, the major predator of bacteria and fungi, shape the taxonomic and functional structure of soil microbiome via trophic regulation. However, how trophic interactions between protists and their prey influence microbially mediated soil organic carbon turnover remains largely unknown. Here, we investigated the protistan communities and microbial trophic interactions across different aggregates-size fractions in agricultural soil with long-term fertilization regimes. Our results showed that aggregate sizes significantly influenced the protistan community and microbial hierarchical interactions. Bacterivores were the predominant protistan functional group and were more abundant in macroaggregates and silt + clay than in microaggregates, while omnivores showed an opposite distribution pattern. Furthermore, partial least square path modeling revealed positive impacts of omnivores on the C-decomposition genes and soil organic matter (SOM) contents, while bacterivores displayed negative impacts. Microbial trophic interactions were intensive in macroaggregates and silt + clay but were restricted in microaggregates, as indicated by the intensity of protistan-bacterial associations and network complexity and connectivity. Cercozoan taxa were consistently identified as the keystone species in SOM degradation-related ecological clusters in macroaggregates and silt + clay, indicating the critical roles of protists in SOM degradation by regulating bacterial and fungal taxa. Chemical fertilization had a positive effect on soil C sequestration through suppressing SOM degradation-related ecological clusters in macroaggregate and silt + clay. Conversely, the associations between the trophic interactions and SOM contents were decoupled in microaggregates, suggesting limited microbial contributions to SOM turnovers. Our study demonstrates the importance of protists-driven trophic interactions on soil C cycling in agricultural ecosystems.</p>

Monthly aggregated climate projections of IPSL-CM5A-LR ISIMIP2a fasttrack data for the BES SIM study

<p>Climate projections used in the BES SIM study (Pereira et al. Science 2024). Netcdf files with average air surface temperature (tas) projections, minimum air surface temperature (tasmin), maximum air surface temperature (tasmax), total precipitation (pr), short wave downwelling radiation (rsds) and number of days with a precipitation above 1.0mm/day (wetday) bias corrected following Hempel et al. (2013), from ISIMIP2a fasttrack, for the model IPSL-CM5A-LR for each RCP scenario, with each file being named after the respective scenario (RCP2.6, RCP6.0, RCP8.5). Monthly means (monmean) or sums (monsum) are provided in a 0.5-degree horizontal resolution from the year 1901 to 2099.</p>
