Impact on energy and air quality of connected and autonomous vehicles in an urban context

<p>Despite numerous studies related to autonomous vehicles and connected vehicles (CAVs) and their impact on the economy or on traffic performance (eg, flow management, accidents), there are not many studies that relate these benefits to the environmental component. In this context, the objective of this work consisted in the integrated assessment of the impacts of CAVs on traffic performance, atmospheric emissions CO<sub>2</sub> and NO<sub>x, </sub>and air quality.</p> <p>To this end, a roundabout in the city of Aveiro was selected as a case study, and different scenarios were created: base scenario, considering the current typology of vehicles (conventional); scenario 2, considering defensive behavior CAVs; scenario 3, considering assertive behavior CAVs; and scenario 1, considering all types of vehicles mentioned above. To ensure a comprehensive analysis, all scenarios were evaluated for a period of 24 hours, corresponding to the period of the experimental campaign carried out, and a cascade of models was applied.</p> <p>First, the PTV VISSIM model was applied which allowed, configuring, calibrating and validating the network under study for an evaluation of the traffic performance. Second, the VSP model was applied to estimate atmospheric emissions, Finally, the CFD VADIS model was applied to air quality assessment.</p> <p>The results obtained allowed us to conclude that the introduction of CAVs, promotes longer travel times, especially during times of higher traffic, and an increase in emissions, mainly by the CAVs with defensive behavior. In terms of air quality, there were large differences in terms of NO<sub>2</sub> concentrations, with the CAVs promoting a degradation of air quality, especially during peak traffic hours.</p>

Population connectivity across a highly fragmented distribution: Phylogeography of the Chalcophaps doves

<p><i>Chalcophaps</i> is a morphologically conserved genus of ground-walking doves distributed from India to mainland China, south to Australia, and across the western Pacific to Vanuatu. Here, we reconstruct the evolutionary history of this genus using DNA sequence data from two nuclear genes and one mitochondrial gene, sampled from throughout the geographic range of <i>Chalcophaps</i>. We find support for three major evolutionary lineages in our phylogenetic reconstruction, each corresponding to the three currently recognized <i>Chalcophaps </i>species. Despite this general concordance, we identify discordant mitochondrial and nuclear ancestries in the subspecies <i>C. longirostris timorensis, </i>raising further questions about the evolutionary history of this Timor endemic population. Within each of the three species, we find evidence for isolation by distance or hierarchical population structure, indicating an important role for geography in the diversification of this genus. Despite being distributed broadly across a highly fragmented geographic region known as a hotspot for avian diversification, the <i>Chalcophaps</i> doves show modest levels of phenotypic and genetic diversity, a pattern potentially explained by strong population connectivity owing to high overwater dispersal capability.</p>

Network analyses reveal the role of large snakes in connecting feeding guilds in a species-rich Amazonian snake community

<p class="normal">In ecological communities, interactions between consumers and resources lead to the emergence of ecological networks and a fundamental problem to solve is to understand which factors shape network structure. Empirical and theoretical studies on ecological networks suggest predator body size is a key factor structuring patterns of interaction. Because larger predators consume a wider resource range, including the prey consumed by smaller predators, we hypothesized that variation in body size favors the rise of nestedness. In contrast, if resource consumption requires specific adaptations, predators are expected to consume distinct sets of resources, thus favoring modularity. We investigate these predictions by characterising the trophic network of a species-rich Amazonian snake community (62 species). Our results revealed an intricate network pattern resulting from larger species feeding on higher diversity of prey, promoting nestedness, and specific lifestyles feeding on distinct resources, promoting modularity. Species removal simulations indicated that the nested structure is favored mainly by the presence of five species of the family Boidae, which because of their body size and generalist lifestyles connect modules in the network. Our study highlights the particular ways traits affect the structure of interactions among consumers and resources at the community level.</p>

Connecting Intelligence and Smart Orchestration for B5G/6G Networks

<p>Hexa-X project will pave the way towards future 6G system concepts by explorative research. Hexa-X is working out a set of 6G technology enablers to interconnect human, physical, and digital worlds. An essential tool to empower this 6G vision is the application of Artificial Intelligence (AI)/Machine Learning (ML) technologies to significantly improve efficiency and service experience by the research on &quot;Connecting Intelligence&quot;. Wide exploration on the potential of AI/ML is necessary to monetise generated data and optimize network management. This can substantially enhance the cost, energy consumption, trust level and service efficiency of network infrastructure. AI allows networks to faster and more precisely adapt to scenarios and traffic demand by acting on predictive orchestration mechanisms in future 6G. Network orchestration should incorporate a complete end-to-end perspective in its decisions and enforcing actions from far edge/devices to RAN disaggregated functions, edge computing, core and cloud elements. This presentation will give an overview on the research and application of AI/ML algorithms to a holistic network orchestration and smart service management.</p>

Data from: Predicting habitat suitability and connectivity for management and conservation of urban wildlife: A real-time web application for grassland water voles

<ol> <li>Natural habitats in urban areas provide benefits for both humans and biodiversity. However, to achieve biodiversity gains we require new techniques to determine habitat suitability and ecological connectivity that will inform urban planning and development.</li> <li>Using an example of an urban population of water voles (<i>Arvicola amphibius</i>) we developed a habitat suitability model and a resistance-surface-based model of landscape connectivity to identify potential connectivity between areas of suitable habitat. We then updated the environmental variables according to new urban development plans and used our models to generate spatially explicit predictions of both habitat suitability and connectivity.</li> <li>To make models accessible to urban and conservation planners we developed an interactive mapping tool that provided users with a graphical user interface (GUI) to inform conservation planning for this species.</li> <li>The model found that habitat suitability for water voles was related to distance from key environmental variables, such as built-up areas and urban green spaces, while the connectivity model identified important corridors connecting areas of potential distribution for this species.</li> <li>Future development plans altered the potential spatial distribution of the water vole population, reducing the extent of suitable habitat in some core areas. The interactive mapping tool made available suitable habitat and connectivity maps for conservation managers to assess new planning applications and for the development of a conservation action plan for water voles.</li> <li>Synthesis and applications: We believe this approach provides a framework for future development of nature conservation tools that can be used by planners to inform ecological decision making, increase biodiversity and reduce human-wildlife conflict in urban environments.</li> </ol>

Differences in network structure and connectivity of four (protected) Palearctic-Afrotropical flyways

<p class="MsoNormal"><em><span>Aim – </span></em><span>Waterbirds that travel seasonally between Europe and Africa use wetlands along four major Palearctic-Afrotropical flyways. However, it is unknown to what extent the overall connectivity of these flyways may be threatened by ongoing habitat loss and degradation. Here, we contrasted the wetland connectivity along these four flyways, applying graph-theoretic connectivity metrics on an intercontinental scale. We also explored for which flyway connectivity is most at risk. We then identified the most important wetlands by their contribution to connectivity in each flyway. </span></p> <p class="MsoNormal"><em><span>Location – </span></em><span>Western Palearctic, Afrotropics</span></p> <p class="MsoNormal"><em><span>Methods – </span></em><span>Based on high-resolution wetland maps, we calculated directional probabilistic connectivity metrics. Estimates of overall connectivity of each flyway were obtained, as well as the relative importance of wetlands, for birds with different migration strategies: short-distance hoppers and long-distance jumpers.</span></p> <p class="MsoNormal"><em><span>Results – </span></em><span>The East-Atlantic flyway and Eastern Mediterranean flyway had higher overall functional connectivity than the two central routes, reflecting the larger barrier represented by the Mediterranean Sea and Sahara Desert. Fewer than 5% of all wetlands supported more than 70% of the total connectivity of the network in each flyway, regardless of the considered migration strategy. These wetlands were either large, strategically positioned, or both. Removing non-protected wetlands from the analysis showed that the connectivity of some flyways could be jeopardised and that the East-Atlantic and Eastern Mediterranean flyway may be most vulnerable to additional habitat loss. </span></p> <p class="MsoNormal"><em><span>Main conclusions – </span></em><span>Our results illustrate (1) the major contribution of unprotected wetlands to flyway connectivity, (2) the importance of integrating migration ecology into site-based connectivity analyses, and (3) the utility of graph-based connectivity metrics to inform conservation prioritisation under present and future scenarios.</span></p>

Southern Hemisphere coasts are biologically connected by frequent, long-distance rafting events

<p>Globally, species distributions are shifting in response to environmental change, and those that cannot disperse risk extinction. Many taxa, including marine species, are showing poleward range shifts as the climate warms. In the Southern Hemisphere, however, circumpolar oceanic fronts can present formidable barriers to dispersal<sup>4</sup>. Although passive, southward movement of species across this barrier has been considered unlikely, the recent discovery of buoyant kelp rafts on beaches in Antarctica demonstrates that such journeys are possible. Rafting is a key process by which diverse taxa &ndash; including terrestrial and coastal marine species &ndash; can cross oceans. Kelp rafts can carry passengers, and thus can act as vectors for long-distance dispersal of coastal organisms. The small numbers of kelp rafts previously found in Antarctica do not, however, shed much light on the frequency of such dispersal events. We here use a combination of high-resolution phylogenomic analyses (&gt;220,000 SNPs) and oceanographic modelling to show that long-distance biological dispersal events in the Southern Ocean are not rare. We document tens of kelp (<em>Durvillaea antarctica</em>) rafting events of thousands of kilometres each, over several decades (1950 &ndash; 2019), with many kelp rafts apparently still reproductively viable. Modelling of dispersal trajectories from genomically-inferred source locations shows that some distant landmasses are particularly well connected, for example South Georgia and New Zealand, and the Kerguelen Islands and Tasmania. Our findings illustrate the power of genomic approaches to track, and modelling to show frequencies, of long-distance dispersal events.</p> <p>&nbsp;</p>

Forest cover and connectivity have pervasive effects on the maintenance of evolutionary distinct interactions in seed dispersal networks

<p>Seed dispersal by animals is one of the most important ecological processes in tropical forests, entailing millions of years of evolutionary adaptations of plants and frugivorous animals forming networks of interactions that, ultimately, contribute to the resilience of such forests. We analyze 29 seed dispersal networks in the threatened Atlantic Forest biodiversity hotspot, with data on the frequency of feeding visits by birds to fruiting plants to answer: (1) which are the effects of forest cover and landscape connectivity on the maintenance of phylogenetic diversity (PD) of interacting birds and plants and the evolutionary distinctiveness of the interactions (EDi) between them; and (2) how EDi and plant/bird PD affects the robustness of the interaction networks? We found that forest cover positively influences both plant and bird PD and EDi. Landscape connectivity is an important predictor of bird PD, but not plant PD, suggesting that the spatial arrangement of forest remnants is essential for guaranteeing bird movement among forest fragments. Furthermore, interaction networks of areas with higher PD and EDi had great robustness to the simulated extinction of species, which underscore the importance of larger forest blocks for conserving evolutionary information and, consequently, the health and natural resistance of seed dispersal networks against environmental change.</p>

Connectivity strategy mapping in California

<p>Protecting or restoring habitat connectivity in landscapes undergoing rapid environmental change requires multiple conservation and restoration strategies. These strategies have different risk profiles, costs, and require various types of technical expertise to conduct. This diversity in landscape context and strategic approach requires more nuance and flexibility than traditional connectivity conservation plans have supported. We present a novel, spatially-explicit framework for developing connectivity conservation priorities and strategies based on Omniscape, an adaptation of Circuitscape, a common tool for mapping habitat connectivity. Using California (USA) as a case study, we mapped structural connectivity and developed a classification of connectivity conservation and restoration categories across the gradient of land use intensities, as well as by land ownership. The most constrained areas with highly concentrated flow (movement potential) make up 3% of the state and occur primarily on private lands. Conversely, intact areas with diffuse flow that indicate multiple connectivity options cover 55% of the state, including the majority of the desert and mountain ecoregions. This "strategy mapping" approach can be used to identify priority areas for conservation investment and suites of potential implementation mechanisms and partners, which in turn may improve the efficiency and effectiveness of connectivity conservation in this era of global change.</p>

Data from: Network analysis of sea turtle movements and connectivity: a tool for conservation prioritization

<p><strong>Aim</strong>: Understanding the spatial ecology of animal movements is a critical element in conserving long-lived, highly mobile marine species. Analysing networks developed from movements of six sea turtle species reveals marine connectivity and can help prioritize conservation efforts.</p> <p><strong>Location</strong>: Global.</p> <p><strong>Methods</strong>: We collated telemetry data from 1,235 individuals and reviewed the literature to determine our dataset's representativeness. We used the telemetry data to develop spatial networks at different scales to examine areas, connections, and their geographic arrangement. We used graph theory metrics to compare networks across regions and species and to identify the role of important areas and connections.</p> <p><strong>Results</strong>: Relevant literature and citations for data used in this study had very little overlap. Network analysis showed that sampling effort influenced network structure and the arrangement of areas and connections for most networks was complex. However, important areas and connections identified by graph theory metrics can be different than areas of high data density. For the global network, marine regions in the Mediterranean had high closeness while links with high betweenness among marine regions in the South Atlantic were critical for maintaining connectivity. Comparisons among species-specific networks showed that functional connectivity was related to movement ecology, resulting in networks composed of different areas and links.</p> <p><strong>Main conclusions</strong>: Network analysis identified the structure and functional connectivity of the sea turtles in our sample at multiple scales. These network characteristics could help guide the coordination of management strategies for wide-ranging animals throughout their geographic extent. Most networks had complex structures that can contribute to greater robustness, but may be more difficult to manage changes when compared to simpler forms. Area-based conservation measures would benefit sea turtle populations when directed towards areas with high closeness dominating network function. Promoting seascape connectivity of links with high betweenness would decrease network vulnerability.</p>

Assessment of connectivity patterns of the marbled crab Pachygrapsus marmoratus in the Adriatic and Ionian seas through combination of genetic data and Lagrangian simulations

<p>Seascape connectivity studies, informing the level of exchange of individuals between populations, can provide extremely valuable data for marine population biology and conservation strategy definition. Here we used a multidisciplinary approach to investigate the connectivity of the marbled crab (Pachygrapsus marmoratus), a high dispersal species, in the Adriatic and Ionian basins. A combination of genetic analyses (based on 15 microsatellites screened in 314 specimens), Lagrangian simulations (obtained with a biophysical model of larval dispersal) and individual-based forward-time simulations (incorporating species-specific fecundity and a wide range of population sizes) disclosed the realized and potential connectivity among eight different locations, including existing or planned Marine Protected Areas (MPAs). Overall, data indicated a general genetic homogeneity, after removing a single outlier locus potentially under directional selection. Lagrangian simulations showed that direct connections potentially exist between several sites, but most sites did not exchange larvae. Forward-time simulations indicated that a few generations of drift would produce detectable genetic differentiation in case of complete isolation as well as when considering the direct connections predicted by Lagrangian simulations.Overall, our results suggest that the observed genetic homogeneity reflects a high level of realized connectivity among sites, which might result from a regional metapopulation dynamics, rather than from direct exchange among populations of the existing or planned MPAs. Thus, in the Adriatic and Ionian basins, connectivity might be critically dependent on unsampled, unprotected, populations, even in species with very high dispersal potential like the marbled crab. Our study pointed out the pitfalls of using wide-dispersing species with broad habitat availability when assessing genetic connectivity among MPAs or areas deserving protection and prompts for the careful consideration of appropriate dispersing features, habitat suitability, reproductive timing and duration in the selection of informative species.</p>

Landscape connectivity and genetic structure in a mainstem and a tributary stonefly (Plecoptera) species using a novel reference genome

<p>Abstract Understanding how environmental variation influences population genetic structure can help predict how environmental change influences population connectivity, genetic diversity, and evolutionary potential. We used riverscape genomics modelling to investigate how climatic and habitat variables relate to patterns of genetic variation in two stonefly species, one from mainstem river habitats (Sweltsa coloradensis) and one from tributaries (Sweltsa fidelis) in 40 sites in northwest Montana, USA. We produced a draft genome assembly for S. coloradensis (N50 = 0.251 Mbp, BUSCO &amp;gt; 95% using "insecta_ob9" reference genes). We genotyped 1930 SNPs in 372 individuals for S. coloradensis and 520 SNPs in 153 individuals for S. fidelis. We found higher genetic diversity for S. coloradensis compared to S. fidelis, but nearly identical genetic differentiation among sites within each species (both had global loci median FST = 0.000), despite differences in stream network location. For landscape genomics and testing for selection, we produced a less stringently filtered data set (3454 and 1070 SNPs for S. coloradensis and S. fidelis, respectively). Environmental variables (mean summer precipitation, slope, aspect, mean June stream temperature, land cover type) were correlated with 19 putative adaptive loci for S. coloradensis. but there was only one putative adaptive locus for S. fidelis (correlated with aspect). Interestingly, we also detected potential hybridization between multiple Sweltsa species which has never been previously detected. Studies like ours, that test for adaptive variation in multiple related species are needed to help assess landscape connectivity and the vulnerability of populations and communities to environmental change.</p>

Monotonic loading performance of GFRP beam-column joints connected with slotted–hole bolts

<p class="MsoNormal"><span>Nowadays there are many types of glass fiber reinforced polymer(GFRP) composite beam and column joints, such as standard connection, bolted through connection, angle steel connection, tube connection and so on, most of which connected by high-strength bolts with round holes. In this paper, monotonic loading tests on GFRPcomposite beam and column joints connected by slotted-hole bolts were conducted. To compare the performance of different joints, two groups of specimens were used in this study; one of group was the beam-column joints connected by the angle steel, and other group was connected by the tube connection. Specimens with different bolt holes, side plate reinforcement condition, and different bolt pre-tightening forces were studied. Failure modes, bending moment curves, plastic rotation, and yield stiffness of the two groups of joints were compared. Results showed thatthe ultimate bending moment bearing capacity of specimens with side plates could be increased by 30%. Under the same conditions, the bearing capacity of the tube joints was about 10% larger than that of the angle steel joints. Although the bearing capacity of joints was not increased by using slotted holes, plastic rotation capacity and yield stiffness of joints with slotted-hole bolts were 1.1 times than that of the ordinary round-hole bolts joints.</span></p>
