Molecular Maquettes of the Pyrite Surface Sites
<p>The dataset provides an introductory level representation of the <em>n</em>(FeS<sub>2</sub>)<sub>(p)</sub> nanoparticles with <em>n</em>=4, <em>n</em>=8, <em>n</em>=18, and <em>n</em>=32 Fe ions. In addition to the paramagnetic and coupled peripheral Fe ions, the latter two compositions involve one and six, low spin, bulk Fe<sup>2+</sup> sites as in the pyrite crystal structure.</p> <p>Calculations were carried out at the MN15/def2SVP level along with all models being embedded into a polarizable continuum model (SMD). The zip files contain representative files that support the XYZ Cartesian Coordinate files. They include spin density contour plots, formatted checkpoint files, the corresponding cube and the output files. Initial model structures were created using the high resolution, low temperature crystal structure</p> <p>An extension is being curated in order to disseminate the structure and electronic properties/features of these nano-scale models of reactive pyrite surfaces.</p> <p>Please stay tuned for further updates ...</p>
Molecular and Taxonomic Reevaluation of the Digitaria filiformis Complex (Poaceae) including a Globally Extinct, Single Site Endemic from New Hampshire, USA, and a New Species from Mexico
<p>We examine the <em>Digitaria filiformis </em>complex, to determine the proper taxonomic rank and rarity of each taxon. The taxonomy of the <em>D. filiformis </em>complex is highly debated and includes two widespread species, <em>D. filiformis </em>and <em>D. villosa</em>; a possibly extinct species endemic to a single-site in New Hampshire, <em>D. laeviglumis</em>; and a rare species of southern Florida and the West Indies, <em>D.</em><em> dolichophylla. </em>We conducted morphologic comparisons and molecular analysis of the four members of the <em>D. filiformis</em> complex, together with specimens from Mexico and Venezuela purportedly identified as <em>D. laeviglumis</em> (morphology only). Based on results of phylogenetic analyses of plastid and nuclear ITS sequences and morphologic comparisons, we recognize five species in the <em>D. filiformis </em>complex, including a newly described Mexican endemic <em>D. glabrifloris. </em>After field investigation we have moved the global rank of <em>D. laeviglumis </em>from globally historical (GH) to extinct (GX), as there is virtually no likelihood of rediscovery. <em>Digitaria</em><em> dolichophylla </em>is much rarer than previously recognized, moving from secure (T5) to imperiled with extinction (G2).</p>
Noise exposure at ultrasound-related industrial workplaces and public sites
<p>The dataset contains single measurements at different public sites and workplaces in Europe. The data has been used or obtained in the context of the project 15HLT03 “EarsII” from the EMPIR-programme.</p> <p>For each measurement metadata is available. This includes the measurement circumstances and involved machinery, a description of the measurement location and noise reduction measures, the microphone position during measurement, and the measurement procedure used to obtain the measurement data.</p> <p>A detailed description of all the quantities contained in the dataset is documented in the accompanying pdf-file.</p>
Tree recruitment from sites across Southern Michigan including the University of Michigan Biological Station, Pellston, MI (2022)
As a result of current climate change, flooding events are becoming more frequent and lasting longer, resulting in temporal floods in areas that have not historically experienced this disturbance. One critical aspect of forest dynamics that could be significantly impacted by increasing flooding is tree species recruitment. While adult trees may be able to survive temporary flooding, establishing seedlings with shallow root systems may not. A single flooding event could jeopardize decades of recruitment if seedlings are unable to survive the anaerobic conditions imposed by higher water levels. Despite the potential impact of flooding on forest dynamics, there is little information on seedling recruitment patterns after exposure to flooding. To understand how flooding conditions could possibly be impacting forest recruitment, we conducted a field observational study across seven temperate forests. We gathered data on seedling abundance and diversity in areas with signs of recent flooding, as well as in nearby control (dry) areas. Our results document the adverse effects flooding conditions have on temperate forest recruitment dynamics, providing insights into how tree recruitment might be impacted by shifts in flooding patterns.
Species and groundcover of understory herbaceous plants in a chronosequence of reforested urban sites, Lexington, KY USA
This dataset contains information on understory plant communities in across twenty urban reforestation sites planted as part of the Reforest the Bluegrass program in Lexington, KY. Urban reforested areas located in Lexington, Kentucky were evaluated over the course of summer 2020. At least three plots (and up to nine plots) were established in each site, with additional plots added if forested patches were sufficiently large. At each plot, we established a 0.008-ha (0.02-ac) circular sampling plot to survey understory plant species. Groundcover of all species, excepting tree- and shrub-forming species, was visually estimated in 10 grids, 0.6 m x 0.6 m. These data will contribute to understanding of understory plant community dynamics in developing urban forests.
Lignin, litter, and soil carbon decomposition from soil samples collected from 20 National Ecological Observatory Network (NEON) sites in 2019
These data support the findings of a manuscript by Huang et al. (2023) published in Nature Communications (doi pending). We used incubations of soil and stable isotope measurements to measure lignin, litter, and SOC decomposition over an 18-month lab incubation and assessed their relationships with geochemical, microbial, N-related and climatic factors across 156 mineral soils collected from 20 National Ecological Observatory Network (NEON) sites, which span broad biophysical gradients (climate, soil, and vegetation type) across North America. The soils were collected in 2019. Lignin decomposition and biogeochemical variables were also measured in an approximately 12-month field incubation.
Atmospheric Wet Deposition in Urban and Suburban Sites Across the United States

To examine potential impacts of urbanization on atmospheric wet deposition, percent impervious surface area and population density data were extracted from Google Earth Engine. Understory percent cover, plant traits, canopy LAI, PAR, temperature, and soil moisture data at multiple time points for sites in the burn chronosequence and Indian Point forest at the University of Michigan Biological Station, Pellston, MI (2022-2023)
Community ecology has sought to understand the mechanisms by which plant communities are assembled through time and space. One prominent way to address how communities are assembled is by quantifying functional traits. While there is a tremendous body of literature on functional traits, debate persists about how to account for variation in measured traits. For example, intraspecific trait variation (ITV) can be equal to or greater than interspecific trait variation and ITV has also been found to vary greatly across years. Therefore, there is a need to account for variability in functional trait measures among and within species and through time to improve our understanding of community assembly. Chronosequences are a powerful tool to address temporal changes in community dynamics, however, the inclusion of understory plants in forest chronosequence studies is still relatively uncommon. Previous chronosequence studies have been primarily performed in grasslands or in a limited subset of forest types, so further work is needed in understory plant traits across other ecosystems and climates to improve trait-based understanding of understory plant communities through time. Additionally, because plant traits change as ecosystems age, community interactions are likely to change with ecosystem age. Interactions of particular interest are herbivory, arthropod predation, and the influence of plant traits on arthropod diversity.
Salt marsh redox potential at sites with runnel remediation in SE Massachusetts, 2020-2022
Natural disturbances, sea level rise, and historic human impacts to salt marshes have increased impounded water on marsh surfaces, resulting in vegetation loss and the associated loss of important ecosystem services such as carbon storage. Runnels are a climate adaptation technique designed to restore salt marsh habitat by reestablishing a tidal connection between impounded water and a nearby drainage feature. While runnels can drain impounded water and promote revegetation, the unintended effects of altering redox conditions remain unknown. Draining sediment and increasing redox potential could stimulate decomposition. We measured redox potential in two marshes in SE Massachusetts (Little Bay in Fairhaven, and Ocean View Farm in Dartmouth) prior to runnel restoration, and two years post restoration. We measured redox potential using three spatial distinctions: in the center of the panne, landward of the panne, and seaward of the panne. This was done every 2-3 weeks over a growing season.

These data were gathered as part of the Hubbard Brook Ecosystem Study (HBES). Sampling sites where ecological indices were used to assess the impact of different environmental stressors in aquatic environments in Argentina
Dataset is a compilation of all sampling sites of articles where ecological indices were used to assess the impact of different environmental stressors in aquatic environments from Argentina. Points of this dataset were extracted from 78 papers published between 1996 and 2018. We selected articles that use ecological indices to analyze some local environmental problematics or stressors. Using the type of index from each article we performed the kml file, which contained the categorized sampling sites by different symbols according to the ecological index: physico-chemical, biological, geomorphological and multimetric. We carried out a map (shapefile) with all the sampling sites referenced to the ecoregions of Argentina proposed by Burkart (1999).
Gloeotrichia echinulata density at four nearshore sites in Lake Sunapee, NH, USA from 2005-2016
Surface densities of Gloeotrichia echinulata, a filamentous colonial cyanobacterium, were collected at four nearshore sites in Lake Sunapee, NH, USA from 2005-2016. Lake Sunapee is a large (1667 hectare surface area), oligotrophic, north temperate lake used for drinking water and recreation with a primarily forested watershed and a moderately-developed shoreline. Samples were collected approximately weekly at Herrick Cove South and Newbury mid-July to September in 2005 and at Herrick Cove South late June to mid-September in 2006. Data collection at Herrick Cove South, Newbury, South of the Fells, and Sunapee Harbor occurred from mid-June to mid-September in 2007-2008 and from May to October in 2009-2016.
Landscape Flowering Phenology Field Data for Sites in the Vicinity of Crested Butte, CO
This dataset represents field observations of reproductive development (flowering phenology) in 135 species of flowering plants collected at 12 field sites in the vicinity of Crested Butte, Colorado starting in 2019. Sites were visited approximately weekly from early May until early August, and all species in flower were recorded in 25 segments along a 50m transect at each site, and species were recorded if they were within 1m of either side of the transect. Datasets included in this package are 1) cleaned field observations of flowering phenology, 2) taxonomic identity of all recorded species, 3) spatial data representing the location of the center of each transect segment, and 4) spatial data representing the segment polygons.
Stream temperature at core phenology stream sites in the Andrews Experimental Forest, 2009 - 2014
The H.J Andrews phenology research included this study of stream temperatures at six headwater streams where springtime emergence of stream macroinvertebrates were collected. Streams were selected across an elevational gradient and with young riparian forests as well as old growth riparian forests. One site was a stream that originated in a cold water spring and the site was a stream that drys late in the summer. Stream temperature loggers were placed in protective housings and stream temperatures collected year-round starting May 2009-July 2014. Data were evaluated for quality control and missing periods were filled. These data document the thermal environment that stream macroinvertebrates experience and that influence their timing of emergence (database SA025).
Vegetation indices calculated from canopy reflectance spectra at four sites along Imnavait Creek, AK during the 2008-2010 growing seasons.
A spectrophotometer was used to scan the canopy vegetation at four sites along Imnavait Creek in the Kuparuk Watershed near Toolik Lake LTER, Alaska. The resulting reflectance spectra were used to calculate average vegetation indices for each site and collection day.

Anaktuvuk River Burn Eddy Flux Measurements, Unburned Site, North Slope Alaska, 2013-2019
We deployed three eddy covariance towers along a burn severity gradient (i.e. severely-, moderately-, and un-burned tundra) to monitor post fire Net Ecosystem Exchange of CO2 (NEE) within the large 2007 Anaktuvuk River fire scar during the summer of 2008. This data represents the post fire energy and mass exchange at the unburned site for 2013-2019.
