Medieval Tombstone, Montemor-o-Novo
Tombstone in a semi-rectangular shape, made in marble. The motive at the center, due to its bad condition, is not possible to determine. This piece is actually in deposit at the Museum of the Convento de S. Domingos, in Montemor-o-Novo. Provenance: This piece comes from the Castle of Montemor-o-Novo, probably from the archaeological deposit of the Church of Santiago, which existed there until the 1980s. In the medieval village inside the fortified walls there were four parish churches, and cemetaries were built around each one. During the Middle Ages it was customary to mark the graves with tombstones, which were nothing more than slabs of stone placed standing straight, on which were engraved religious symbols and on which sometimes was indicated the profession of the deceased. This set of stelae comes safely from the ancient medieval cemeteries inside the castle, although it is not possible to determine to which church (s) it was associated. Medieval door lintel in Via del Fondaccio, Santa Fiora, Grosseto, Tuscany. In this lintel is represented a man who climbs a tree to escape from wild beasts eating the roots of the tree. On the other side a dragon waits for the man to fall down. This very rare exemple of medieval basrelief may be dated to 14th c. on the basis of toolmarks, although it is not possible to affirm that the piece is in its original position, since the facade of the house is plastered and it is therefore not possible to place it stratigraphically. The subject represented comes from a chapter of the medieval 'novel' of Barlaam and Josaphat, a christian version of the life of Buddha who became progressively popular in Europe from the 10h c. onwards. In the scene, the tree represents mundane life and the wild animals represent time, consuming the roots of material life. Data were collected as part of a joint research project between GDH and the Association for the Digitization and Informatisation of Cultural Heritage (DIGI.BA) in Sarajevo, in full collaboration with the National Museum of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Sarajevo. Medieval hermitage of Santa Coloma in Albendiego
The hermitage of Santa Coloma located in the Guadalajara region of Spain is one of the jewels of Spanish Romanesque art. Built possibly in the XII century after the Christian conquest of this territory, its most valuable element is its apse. The windows are decorated with beautiful latticework carved in stone. The hermitage was reformed and enlarged in the XV century. The model was made in Reality Capture software using 419 images captured with a DJI Phantom 4+ drone. We want to thank the Diocesan Delegation of Cultural Heritage of Guadalajara, especially its cultural delegate Mr. Miguel Ángel Ortega Canales, for the facilities they have given us and for the interest they have shown in the project. Medieval capital of the thirteenth century belonging to the Portico de Santiago, in the parish church of El Salvador (Cifuentes, Spain). The scene of the Annunciation is represented in which the angel Gabriel announces to the Virgin Mary that she is going to be the mother of Jesus. Her name is written on the head of Mary and the same happens on the head of the angel Gabriel. In addition, the angel Gabriel carries in her hands an inscription that says "ave maria gracia plena" (Hail Mary, full of grace). The upper part of the capital is decorated with lily flowers. Remnant of the Medieval Santa Fiora Drawbridge
From 1381 to 1385 Santa Fiora, for most of its history an independent medieval state ruled by Counts Aldobrandeschi, was conquered by the Republic of Siena, which transformed it into a military hub in Monte Amiata. The Siennese government started an intense construction activity of fortification and extension of the former Aldobrandeschi fortress. The first intervention consisted in the expansion of the defensive moat that ran at least on the south and east sides of the citadel wall and part of which is still preserved and visible in the basement of the surveyed structures. At the same time, a fortified antiport was built, which housed the main entrance to the fortress proper, through a drawbridge crossing the moat.
