[DATA_SCIENCE] Interviews: The Catalogue of Somatic Mutations in Cancer (COSMIC)

This is a set of interview transcripts executed by Niccolò Tempini between May 2016 and July 2017, as part of the ERC project "The Epistemology of Data-Intensive Science", and in the context of a case study of COSMIC. Dataset of the study "Bridging cultural studies and learning science: An investigation of social media use for Holocaust memory and education in the digital age"

This Zenodo item contains the dataset of the study: Manca, S. (2020). “Bridging cultural studies and learning science: An investigation of social media use for Holocaust memory and education in the digital age". Abstract Along with advances in communication technology that are making new forms of historical memorialization and education available, social media are researched as valuable tools for supporting forms of digital memory and for engaging students and teachers about historical knowledge and moral education. This study aims to map the current state of Holocaust remembrance and Holocaust education and to identify main topics of research in the two areas. It adopts a mixed-method approach that combines qualitative analysis with bibliometric approaches to review publications that use social media for digital memory and history education about the Holocaust. Results based on 28 publications reveal several research topics and that, despite some common theoretical references, the two subfields mostly rely on separate conceptual backgrounds. While Holocaust remembrance is a well-established research field, there are few studies and a lack of theoretical elaboration about social media use for teaching and learning about the Holocaust.

A Taxonomy of Contemporary Arctic Studies under Social Sciences and Humanities Domain

This database serves a list of the scientific studies related to the developments in the Arctic Region from the perspective of Social Sciences and Humanities. It analyzes the Arctic studies considering their structural features, related key words, relevance to PESTEL-DEL analysis (extension of the well-known PESTEL methodology by including the dimensions of Defense-Security, Energy and Logistics), geographical coverage and methodological framework. The database covers 169 most recent scientific studies published between 2007 and 2019. It addresses topics including political issues and disputes in the Arctic Region, potential economic activities as well as economic opportunities and challenges, social and ecological structure of the region, technological developments based on the changing conditions, environmental concerns as a result of climate change and new industrial activities, legal disputes regarding continental shelf and EEZ, national defense and security efforts of the actors in the Arctic, and potential energy reserves and new logistics routes that have become accessible due to melting glaciers.

Data from: Measuring researchers' potential scholarly impact with structural variations: four types of researchers in information science (1979–2018)

We propose a method to measure the potential scholarly impact of researchers based on network structural variations they introduced to the underlying author co-citation network of their field. We applied the method to the information science field based on 91,978 papers published between 1979 and 2018 from the Web of Science. We divided the entire period into eight consecutive intervals and measured structural variation change rates (DM) of individual authors in corresponding author co-citation networks. Four types of researchers are identified in terms of temporal dynamics of their potential scholarly impact—1) Increasing, 2) Decreasing, 3) Sustained, and 4) Transient. The study contributes to the understanding of how researchers' scholarly impact might evolve in a broad context of the corresponding research community. Specifically, this study illustrated a crucial role played by structural variation metrics in measuring and explaining the potential scholarly impact of a researcher. This method based on the structural variation analysis offers a theoretical framework and a practical platform to analyze the potential scholarly impact of researchers and their specific contributions.

Raw and aggregated data for the study introduced in the article "Citing and referencing habits in Medicine and Social Sciences journals in 2019"

This dataset contains all the raw data and aggregated data subject of the study introduced in the article "Citing and referencing habits in Medicine and Social Sciences journals in 2019". The study is based on the bibliographic and citation data contained in 213 articles published in 46 journals in two subject areas: Medicine and Social Sciences. The articles contained a total amount of 9,911 bibliographic references and 16,193 mentions and quotations overall. In particular, the raw data are about 27 journals, 132 articles, 5,340 bibliographic references, 8,400 mentions and 5 quotations in Medicine, and 19 journals, 81 articles, 4,571 bibliographic references, 6,953 mentions and 835 quotations in Social Sciences. The dataset is composed of three files: <ul> <li>the file "medicine-journals.csv" contains the raw data of the articles published in Medicine journals;</li> <li>the file "social-sciences-journals.csv" contains the raw data of the articles published in Social Sciences journals;</li> <li>the file "aggregated-data-medicine-social-sciences.csv" contains the aggregated data created considering the raw data in the previous files, which have been used to creating all the tables and figures in the article.</li> </ul>

Research Data Management in Health and Biomedical Citizen Science: Practices and Prospects

Background: Public engagement in health and biomedical research is being influenced by the paradigm of citizen science. However, conventional health and biomedical research relies on sophisticated research data management tools and methods. Considering these, what contribution can citizen science make in this field of research? How can it follow research protocols and produce reliable results? Objective: The aim of this paper is to analyse research data management practices in existing biomedical citizen science studies, so as to provide insights for members of the public and of the research community considering this approach to research. Methods: A scoping review was conducted on this topic to determine data management characteristics of health and bio medical citizen science research. From this review and related web searching, we chose five online platforms and a specific research project associated with each, to understand their research data management approaches and enablers. Results: Health and biomedical citizen science platforms and projects are diverse in terms of types of work with data and data management activities that in themselves may have scientific merit. However, consistent approaches in the use of research data management models or practices seem lacking, or at least are not evident. Conclusions: There is potential for important data collection and analysis activities to be opaque or irreproducible in health and biomedical citizen science initiatives without the implementation of a research data management model that is transparent and accessible to team members and to external audiences. This situation might be improved with participatory development of standards that can be applied to diverse projects and platforms, across the research data life cycle.
