Impact of nonlinear hydrodynamic modelling on geometric optimisation of a spherical heaving point absorber

<p>Due to the amount of iterative computation involved, researchers involved in geometric optimisation of wave energy devices typically employ linear hydrodynamic models. However, the exaggerated motion of wave energy devices, aided by energy maximising control action, challenges the assumptions upon which linear hydrodynamic modelling relies. Furthermore, the optimal device geometry is also sensitive to the nature of the energy-maximisation controller employed, and to the set of wave conditions over which the optimisation is carried out.<br> &nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp;<br> In order to focus on the essential issues, this study takes the simplest possible device for optimisation, a heaving sphere (with just one free parameter), but one which exhibits nonlinear hydrodynamic characteristics, due to the non-uniform cross-sectional area. The study examines the sensitivity to the inclusion of nonlinear Froude-Krylov forces. In addition, the sensitivity of the optimal device size to differences in the applied control algorithm is also studied, as are effects due to different representative sea state representations and performance evaluation criteria.</p>

An Extensive Dataset of Geometric Objects Placed in a Watertank for Electrical Impedance Tomography

<p>Open-access experimental Electrical Impedance Tomography (EIT) data set.<br> The measurements were generated using the ScioSpec EIT device from which 16 electrodes were connected to a phantom tank filled with saline. Four 3D-printed cylindrical objects of different sizes were placed in this tank area-wide. (15 fosil pongo samples)&nbsp;</p> <p>&#39;Raw_Reference_Dataset&#39; is a folder containing 9 fasta files. Each fasta contains the reference sequences of multiple samples (6 H.sapiens,27 Pongo, 30 Gorilla, 38 Pan, 2 Macaca, 1 Nomascus, 1 Microcebus, 1 Papio ) for one protein.</p> <p>&#39;Alignments&#39; is a folder containing 9 fasta files with the name of a protein. Each fasta file contains the aligned sequences of the reference dataset and the ancient samples for that protein. Additionally, the fasta file &#39;CONCATENATED.fa&#39; contains all proteins concatenated, aligned and I/L fixed.</p>

In the next columns, the velocity and acceleration of the sun meridian declination is also assessed. And the last column assesses the relative concentration of solar resources available per minute of latitude (arcmin), which is obtained by giving 100% to the 365 rotations of the planet, considering the velocity of the sun meridian declination.</p>

A geometric morphometric approach to identify uncomplete snake vertebrae from raptor bird feeding remains

<p>The Hungarian meadow viper (<em>Vipera ursinii rakosiensis</em>) is an endangered subspecies of <em>Vipera ursinii</em>, which faces high predation pressure, partially due to avian species. To create a systematic method for estimating the measure of predation pressure, we developed a geometric morphometric approach to identify both undamaged and damaged vertebrae of snake species found in Hungarian meadow viper habitats from raptor feeding remains. We used linear discriminant analysis with a reference material of vertebrae from identified snake species as training data. We also tested its efficiency by predicting the identification results of different simulation levels based on vertebra completeness. We practiced this method on vertebrae of unknown species of snakes obtained from nests and pellets of short-toed snake eagles (<em>Circaetus gallicus</em>, n=9), common buzzards (<em>Buteo buteo</em>, n=14) and Montagu&rsquo;s harriers (<em>Circus pygargus</em>, n=3). The identification approach showed high accuracy, even in the case of missing landmarks to some extent. We identified vertebrae remnants of <em>Natrix natrix</em> (n=172, 83.9%), <em>Coronella austriaca</em> (n=10, 4.9%) and <em>V. u. rakosiensis</em> (n=23, 11.2%). Both, the reptile specialist <em>C. gallicus</em> and<em> </em>the generalist<em> B. buteo</em> proved to be preying on <em>V. u. rakosiensis</em>, while samples of <em>C. pygargus</em> did not contain any snake remains despite of previous observations of <em>V. ursinii</em> predations. Our approach is applicable for other studies and taxa as well, therefore can be a practical tool for classification of incomplete vertebrae, which is otherwise hardly identifiable. Furthermore, it could be applied to help estimate predation pressure on endangered snake species.</p>

Supplementary material from: ZooMS confirms geometric morphometrics species identification of ancient sheep and goat

<p><span>Geometric morphometrics can effectively distinguish isolated third lower molars of present-day sheep and goat, but its applicability to archaeological specimens has yet to be established. Using a modern reference collection of 743 sheep and goats and a 2D-landmark-based geometric morphometric (GMM) protocol, this study aimed to morphometrically identify 109 archaeological specimens, used as case studies, dating from the Late Neolithic to the modern period/era. These morphometric identifications were then compared to molecular identifications via collagen peptide mass fingerprinting, known as Zooarcheology by Mass Spectrometry (ZooMS). ZooMS confirmed the morphometric identifications for 104 specimens, with the five misidentified specimens all morphometrically identified as goat. </span></p> <p><span>Modern sheep and goats have larger teeth and distinct shapes compared to their archaeological counterparts, suggesting strong differences between archaeological and modern specimens potentially linked with recent breed improvement or geographic origin of the specimens. In addition, for both species, </span><span>some of the archaeological dental morphologies do not match with any of our modern references</span><span>.</span></p> <p><span>This study validates the applicability of geometric morphometrics for identifying isolated archaeological sheep and goat teeth. It represents a stepping stone for future, non-destructive, bioarchaeological studies of the two species.</span></p>

* This white plaster model has a rectangular base. The surface rising from the base begins as an ellipse and rises to a central peak. No curves are drawn on it. This model was designed in 1877 by L.
