We deployed three eddy covariance towers along a burn severity gradient (i.e. severely-, moderately-, and un-burned tundra) to monitor post fire Net Ecosystem Exchange of CO2 (NEE) within the large 2007 Anaktuvuk River fire scar during the summer of 2008. Tussock height and diameter in moist acidic tussock tundra at the site of the 2007 Anaktuvuk River fire scar, and nearby unburned tundra measured in 2016
This dataset consists of Eriophorum vaginatum tussock height and width (diameter) measurements, and was used to evaluate differences in physical strucutre of previously burned tundra (2007 Anaktuvuk River fire) and nearby unburned tundra. At each site, all tussocks that intersected four 100 meter transects were measured from soil surface to tussock top in four cardinal directions, and diameter was measured in two directions. These data were used to examine the impact of post-fire changes in plant community composition and structure on habitat suitability and rodent herbivore activity in response to a large, severe, and unprecedented fire in northern Alaska moist acidic tundra.

This dataset consists of tussock density, mortality rates and causes, and an assesment of rodent-herbivore activity levels in previously burned (2007 Anaktuvuk River fire) and unburned tussock tundra. Eriophourm vaginatum tussocks were counted every meter within a 1 square meter quadrat along three transects. Cause of tussock mortality, as well as level of rodent herbivory was assessed for each tussock, and rodent herbivore activity was assessed for each quadrat. The goal of the project was to examine the impact of post-fire changes in plant community composition and structure on habitat suitability and rodent herbivore activity in response to a large, severe, and unprecedented fire in northern Alaska moist acidic tundra.
Baltimore Ecosystem Study: Stream chemistry for core sites in Gwynns Falls, 1998- ongoing
In the Baltimore urban long-term ecological research (LTER) project, (Baltimore Ecosystem Study, BES) we use the watershed approach to evaluate integrated ecosystem function. The LTER research is centered on the Gwynns Falls watershed, a 17,150 ha catchment that traverses a gradient from the urban core of Baltimore, through older urban residential (1900 - 1950) and suburban (1950- 1980) zones, rapidly suburbanizing areas and a rural/suburban fringe. Our long-term sampling network includes four longitudinal sampling sites along the Gwynns Falls as well as several small (40 - 100 ha) watersheds located within or near to the Gwynns Falls. The longitudinal sites provide data on water and nutrient fluxes in the different land use zones of the watershed (rural/suburban, rapidly suburbanizing, old suburban, urban core) and the small watersheds provide more focused data on specific land use areas (forest, agriculture, rural/suburban, urban). Each of the gaging sites is continuously monitored for discharge and is sampled weekly for chemistry. Additional chemical sampling is carried out in a supplemental set of sites to provide a greater range of land use. Weekly analyses includes nitrate, phosphate, total nitrogen, total phosphorus, chloride and sulfate, turbidity, fecal coliforms, temperature, dissolved oxygen and pH. Surface carbon, water and energy fluxes measured by eddy covariance at 3 sites within the Alaska Peatlands Experiment and Bonanza Creek Experimental Forest
These data are simultaneous and continuous measurements of carbon, water and energy fluxes of the terrestrial landscape. These fluxes are major regulatory drivers of the boreal climate system and form key linkages and feedbacks between the land surface, the atmosphere and the oceans. At the APEX project site, within Bonanza Creek Experimental Forest, this monitoring is repeated across a chronosequence of permafrost degradation; the Black Spruce site is an area of stable permafrost with intact black spruce forest (APEX gamma site), the Thermokarst site is an active thermokarst zone with considerable tree mortality (APEX betaSW site), the Fen site is within a stable treeless fen with deep active layer depth (APEX apexcon,low, and ele sites). The main variables being monitored are the instananeous fluxes of CO2, water vapor and surface energy (shortwave, longwave and net radiation), secondary variables included photosynthetically active radiation (PAR), air and soil temperatures, rainfall, snow depth, soil moisture content, wind direction and speed, and average atmospheric concentrations of CO2 and H2O through the year.
Soil enzyme activities and soil chemistry near and away from alder collected at sites along the Sagavanirktok River, BNZ LTER sites UP3a-c, and sites near BNZ LTER site WDI6, collected June and July 2019
This dataset contains the data and R code associated with Heslop et al. 2021 "Soil Enzymes Illustrate the Effects of Alder Nitrogen Fixation on Soil Carbon Processes in Arctic and Boreal Ecosystems" published in Ecosphere. Activities of acid phosphatase, beta-glucosidase, and phenoloxidase, as well as %N, C, P, and Mo, 15N and 13C natural abundance, resin extractable P, and SOM chemsitry using FTIR spectroscopy were measured for soils taken under alder (Alnus viridis ssp. fruticosa) canopies and 5 m away. Samples were collected in the Arctic at sites near Sagwon Bluffs and the Lupine-Sagavanirktok river confluence as well as in the boreal forest at BNZ LTER sites UP3a-c and at sites located near BNZ LTER site WDI6.
Bonanza Creek LTER: Bore Hole Data from Permafrost Site Location near Fairbanks, AK 2009-2021
The active layer and permafrost are the primary subsurface components of the Arctic land-atmosphere system. A permafrost research program is proposed that combines field measurements, laboratory measurements, and analyses and interpretations of data to be obtained at long-term study sites along a transects. These sites are in undisturbed areas, span a wide range of permafrost, climatic, and environmental conditions, include drill holes in the permafrost (from 40 to 75 m in depth), and have a long time series of data.

This dataset addresses the effects of epidermal leaf mining by the aspen leaf miner (Phyllocnistis populiella) on the physiology and water relations of aspen leaves. The dataset contains measurements of gas exchange, water potential, water content, and delta13C of aspen leaves manipulated to bear leaf mining damage on the top (adaxial) leaf surface only, the bottom (abaxial) leaf surface only, or no mining damage.

Alaska 2004 Burns: Counts of live and dead seedlings of lodgepole pine in a post-fire seeding experiment at 39 sites
This dataset contains counts of emerged seedlings of lodgepole pine from seeds sown in an experimental seeding study. The experiment started in 2005 at sites that burned in 2004 in interior Alaska. Records are from a set of 39 intensive study sites that were formerly dominated by black spruce along the Steese, Taylor, and Dalton highways. Seeds were sown in five 50 x 50 cm quadrats at each site in August 2005 and most emerged in early summer 2005. Seedling counts were measured for 6 years, in 2006, 2007 2008, and 2011. All pine seedlings were removed in 2011.
Fire Self-Limitation (FiSL) Experiment: Quantifying Wildfire Carbon Combustion Losses in boreal Deciduous and Mixed Forests in Interior Alaska and the Boreal Cordillera I: Site Attribute Data 2022
This dataset contains site characteristics collected in the field for plots in 8 fire scars in Interior Alaska and the Yukon. Data was collected in the summer of 2022. Fire scars sampled included Shovel Creek (2019), Aggie Creek (2015), Hess Creek (2019), Baker (2015), Munson Creek (2021), Isom Creek (2020), 2019MA014 (2019), and 2019BC005 (2019). Data includes detailed site characteristics collected at the site level. Each site included three 10 m * 2 m plots (A, B, and C) laid in a single 30 m transect (or, where constrained, in parallel).

We measured CWD in five different forest communities/elevations at Coweeta Hydrologic Lab. A subsample of CWD in each plot was measured for percent C and percent N, as well as for cations.

Measurements of coarse woody debris at 10 hillslope sites at the Coweeta Hyrdological Laboratory, Macon County, North Carolina
Coarse woody debris was measured at 10 hillslope sites representing a gradient of development, including forested, valley agriculture, and mountain housing developments in Macon County, NC. The length, diameters, decay class, and species of coarse wood was measured within each of the twelve 10 x 10-m plots located within each of the 10 sites. Volume of coarse wood was then calculated. Data from a subset of the sites were used as a covariate for Aphaenogaster spp. ant occupancy rates.
Coweeta Synoptic Data from 49 sampling sites in the Upper Little Tennessee River Basin from 2009 to 2010 (mesoscale habitat data)
This data was generated as part of synoptic sampling conducted at the Coweeta LTER between June 2009 and May 2010. 49 wadeable streams with low levels of development were sampled throughout the Upper Little Tennessee River Basin in the Southern Appalachians. Effects of riparian vegetative conditions on a suite of channel morphological variables were investigated: active channel width, variability of width within a reach, large wood frequency, mesoscale habitat distributions, median particle size, and percent fines. Stream mesoscale habitat areas for each 150 m stream reach were recorded in this particular dataset. At each site, a uniform 150 meter section of stream was surveyed. Observers kept a running tally of the areas associated with various mesoscale habitat units including, cascades, riffles, pools, alcoves, pocket water, runs, glides, and obstructions.
Physical Hydrologic Data for the National Audubon Society's 16 Research Sites in coastal mangrove transition zone of southern Florida, March 1986 - ongoing
Temperature, salinity and depth were continuously collected using Hydrolab/Hach sensors within the coastal mangrove transition zone at 16 sites from southern Biscayne Bay to Cape Sable. Data were collected at 12 sites within the coastal mangrove zone of Everglades National Park, incorporating the Cape Sable, Taylor River and Panhandle region. Data were collected at 4 sites within the coastal mangrove zone of southern Biscayne Bay, incorporating the Manatee Bay, Barnes Sound, and Card Sound regions. Rainfall, pH, and dissolved oxygen were collected at a number of these sites with varying periods of record.
FCE LTER Taylor Slough/Panhandle-7 Site Scrub Red Mangrove (Rhizophora mangle) Leaf Gas Exchange Data, Florida, USA from January-December 2019
Rates of leaf gas exchange were measured monthly during the 2019 calendar year in a scrub Red mangrove (Rhizophora mangle (L.) L.) forest site (TS/Ph-7) near the mouth of Taylor River in southeastern Florida Everglades. Sampling of green mature leaves was designed to target scrub mangrove tree branches growing on slightly higher elevation mangrove island centers versus permanently inundated island edge habitats. Concurrent measurements of water depth and surface and porewater salinity were collected at each of the mangrove island habitats, with the research objective of assessing the effect of physicochemical variables on rates of leaf gas exchange (i.e., assimilation and stomatal conductance). Leaf gas exchange data were collected using the Li-6800 portable photosynthesis system (Li-COR, Lincoln, NE). Additional data on leaf functional traits and nutrient concentrations and environmental data from the site are included. Data are presented in five datasets (.csv).
December 2002 surface water bacterial productivity at ten Georgia Coastal Ecosystems LTER sampling sites
Surface water samples were collected during low tide survays near ten Georgia Coastal Ecosystem LTER sampling sites in December, 2002. The incorporation of tritiated leucine in unfiltered samples during one hour incubations was measured using a standard microcentrifuge method to estimate bacterial productivity in each sample. This study was part of the GCE-LTER hydrographic monitoring program, and will be repeated quarterly.

Surface water samples were collected during low tide survays near ten Georgia Coastal Ecosystem LTER sampling sites in March, 2003. The incorporation of tritiated leucine in unfiltered samples during one hour incubations was measured using a standard microcentrifuge method to estimate bacterial productivity in each sample. This study was part of the GCE-LTER hydrographic monitoring program, and will be repeated quarterly.
