May 2004 bin-averaged CTD profiles for the Georgia Coastal Ecosystems Altamaha River transect

Four hydrographic surveys were performed on May 28, 2004, along an east-to-west transect up the Altamaha River in Georgia (Altamaha River Transect, GCE-AL). Vertical CTD profiles were collected at 2km intervals from -4km to 24km upriver along the transect during low and high tidal regimes. Conductivity, temperature, pressure and optical backscatter were measured, and depth, salinity and sigma-t were calculated for each profile. Data values collected on the upcast were deleted, and the remaining data were averaged within 0.5m depth bins and interpolated to produce a smooth profile for contouring. This data set was collected as part of the Georgia Coastal Ecosystems LTER quarterly hydrographic monitoring program.

Porewater nutrients, dissolved organics, redox species, and gasses in estuarine intertidal sediments at sites on Sapelo Island and near the Satilla River from Fall 2000 through Fall 2002

Seasonal patterns of estuarine creek-bank sediment porewater nutrients, dissolved organics, redox species and gasses were investigated at several sites on Sapelo Island and the Satilla River in coastal Georgia. Porewater ammonium, nitrate+nitrite, phosphate, silica, dissolved organic carbon, nitrogen and phosphorus, reduced iron and manganese, chloride, sulfate, hydrogen sulfide, pH, dissolved inorganic carbon, methane and nitrogen gas were measured at centimeter scale resolution depth profiles with the use of porewater equilibration meters. Several relatively pristine sites on Sapelo Island (Moses Hammock, Dean Creek and Marine Institute), a site slightly impacted by development (White Oak Creek) and a presumably heavily impacted site (Dover Bluff) show different levels and patterns of several porewater constituents.

Long-term water quality monitoring in the Altamaha, Doboy and Sapelo sounds and the Duplin River near Sapelo Island, Georgia from May 2001 to August 2009

Water samples were collected on Georgia Coastal Ecosystems LTER oceanographic monitoring cuirses approximately every three months from May 2001 through December 2006 and monthly from November 2006 to August 2009. Concentrations of dissolved nutrients (ammonium, nitrate+nitrite, phosphate), dissolved organics (DOC, DON, DOP), particulate organic carbon and nitrogen, total suspended sediment, and total particulate iron and phosphorus were measured using standard analytical methods. The concentrations of six elements (calcium, potassium, magnesium, sodium, silicon, and strontium) were also determined occasionally using elemental analysis by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS).

Long-term water quality monitoring on the Altamaha River and major tributaries from September 2000 through April 2009

Water samples were collected from the Altamaha River (approximately weekly) and several tributaries (bimonthly) from September 2000 through September 2001. Samples were then collected at less frequent intervals from September 2001 through April 2009. The concentration of dissolved nutrients (ammonium, nitrate+nitrite, phosphate, silicate), dissolved organics (DOC, DON, DOP) and total suspended solids were measured using standard methods. The concentrations of 20 elements (Al, B, Ba, Ca, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, K, Mg, Mn, Mo, Na, Ni, P, Pb, Si, Sr and Zn) were also determined using elemental analysis by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). Total dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) was measured using a custom automated DIC analyzer. Total alkalinity (TA)was determined by Gran titration and pH of surface water was measured using a glass electrode.

Topographic and bathymetric data were collected for the Duplin River and adjacent intertidal areas near Sapelo Island, Georgia, using high-precision multibeam SONAR equipment. The bathymetric survey was performed from 09-Dec-2009 to 12-Dec-2009. This study was conducted to create a base map of bathymetry, morphology and physical habitat of the Duplin River, which is a primary study site of the Georgia Coastal Ecosystems Long Term Ecological Research (GCE-LTER) project.

Digital Elevation Model (DEM) of Doboy Sound at the mouth of the Duplin River near Sapelo Island, Georgia

The purpose of this study was to map the bathymetry of Doboy Sound near the mouth of the Duplin River adjacent to Sapelo Island, Georgia. This study extends a previous bathymetry mapping project conducted in 2009. The primary objective of the Duplin River project in 2009 was to provide data in support of understanding the sediment and water exchange process between intertidal areas and tidal creeks of the Duplin River. The Center for Marine and Wetland Studies (CMWS) surveyed the Doboy Sound using the Simrad EM3002D Multibeam Echosounder (MBES) in April 2011. A digital elevation model (DEM) was then developed based on the depth survey data.
