Monitoring water content variations from seismic noise in a controlled laboratory experiment: PART 1 [Dataset]

This dataset has been obtained with an original laboratory experiment aimed at assessing the sensitivity of passive seismic interferometry imaging (PII) to controlled fluctuations in water content. Multiple controlled cycles of water imbibition and draining at the base of the sandbox produce significant variations in the seismic wavefield and especially in dominant surface waves. PART 1: seismic measurements from 0001 to 1500minutes

Dataset for "Fiber-Seismometer Hybrid Sensing for Seismic Imaging and Monitoring"

The ambient noise dataset was collected on May 8, 2023, from a fiber-seismometer hybrid sensing deployment positioned along the Qiantang River in Hangzhou. The DAS data, Z-component and R-component data of seismometers are all stored in MAT format. Please refer to our study for detailed information on the dataset.

Abstract about this study:

Extreme climate events and geological disasters have intensified the urgency for advancing seismic imaging and monitoring. Despite developments in seismic instrumentation, particularly with seismometers and Distributed Acoustic Sensing (DAS), fine-scale observations remain challenging due to their inherent limitations and deployment configurations. This study introduces a novel hybrid sensing interferometry method that enhances multi-component signal extraction—especially poor horizontal components—through a two-step cross-correlation of DAS and seismometers. A field application near the Qiantang River in Hangzhou illustrates how our proposed framework retrieves high-quality multi-component empirical Green’s functions and advances ultra-short duration ambient noise seismic imaging techniques, including surface wave dispersion measurements and horizontal-to-vertical spectral ratio assessments. Our approach also facilitates monitoring of near-surface seismic velocity changes, dv/v, with an unprecedented 10-minute resolution, shedding light on shallow dynamic hydraulic responses. This innovative hybrid sensing framework offers new perspectives and methodologies for transforming future research in seismological observation, imaging, and monitoring.

Seismic Catalogue for Hengill 2017-2022: Handpicked earthquakes

Earthquake catalogue from the Hengill high-temperature geothermal area, SW Iceland, 2017-2022: Manually refined earthquakes.

Iceland GeoSurvey (https://isor.is/) operates a local seismic network in the Hengill area (https://www.fdsn.org/networks/detail/OR/) for ON Power (https://www.on.is/), including streaming of real time data, automatic processing and manual refining of earthquake locations. The purpose of the network is to monitor ON Power’s geothermal operations and natural geothermal activity. All waveform data and earthquake locations made with the seismic network are owned by ON Power. The network is complemented with nearby stations from the SIL national seismic network of the Icelandic Meteorological Office (https://www.vedur.is/).

For the purpose of the study “Scattering and absorption imaging of the Hengill high-temperature geothermal area, southwest Iceland” by Napolitano et al., ON Power shares earthquake locations of ML > 0.5 between latitude: 64.02°N - 64.15°N and longitude: 21.1°W - 21.4°W. The earthquake catalogue consists of 2240 events from 2017-2022. ÍSOR manually refined both P and S phases for all 2240 events in the catalogue used for the attenuation tomography. The initial automatic SeisComP picks were generated using the SIL velocity model (Bjarnason et al., 1993), with a constant Vp/Vs ratio of 1.78.

Seismic wave propagation in partially saturated rocks with a fractal distribution of fluid-patch size

Laboratory experiments on partially saturated rocks show that seismic attenuation can be significant, where the main mechanism is wave-induced local fluid flow (WILFF) due to patchy saturation at different spatial scales. We propose a theory to obtain the seismic properties of partially saturated rocks based on fractal (self-similar) patches, leading to an effective frequency-dependent fluid modulus. The model combines the differential effective medium (DEM) and Biot-Rayleigh theories, where the patches are inclusions incrementally added, such that the effective fluid is assumed the host for the next addition. The analysis shows that the seismic properties are independent on the number of iterations, but depend on the scale range (radius) of the inclusions, fractal dimension Df of the self-similar distribution, parameter \(\theta\) of the exponential distribution, mean radius r0 and variance \({\sigma_r}^2\) of the Gaussian distribution. Forced-oscillation experiments are performed on a limestone sample under partial water-saturation conditions at seismic frequencies (2-500 Hz), to obtain the velocity dispersion and extensional attenuation. The proposed theory provides a reasonable description of the experimental data and other existing measurements on Berea sandstone and tight carbonates.
