Early Childhood Development of Communicative Competence in Two Urban African Contexts

<p>The study assessed the communicative competencies of 2-3 year-old children, and parental perceptions of influences on their child&rsquo;s development, in two contrasting neighbourhoods of Zambia&rsquo;s multilingual capital city, Lusaka: a low-income, high density neighbourhood, and a more affluent low-density area. An adapted version of the MacArthur-Bates Communicative Development Inventory was administered individually to each parent. Parents then participated in semi-structured focus group discussions. Parental reports revealed a bilingual or plurilingual lexical repertoire in these young children, with fluid intermingling between English and indigenous Bantu languages, notably ciNyanja, the city&rsquo;s lingua franca. Alternative methods of scoring the inventory showed that children of affluent families knew more English words, while children of low-income families knew more Bantu language words. The two groups were equal on an &lt;/i&gt;overall score&lt;i&gt; that included words known in any language. Recent changes in national educational policy prioritise local language instruction over English. The two groups of parents expressed different attitudes towards this policy, reflecting cultural values and child socialisation practices. Young children in the high-density area were encouraged to play more freely with neighborhood peers. We recommend greater acceptance of linguistic fluidity by early education instructors as a powerful cognitive resource for the growth of communicative competence.</p>

Data from: How science communications can help build societal perceptions of invasive alien species and their impacts on the environment

<p>In this study, we investigated the reported beneficial aspects of the invasive alien plant species (IAPS) and argued that, over time and space, the detrimental impacts of the IAS might endanger sustainable livelihoods. The data set contains the following files:</p> <p>Data_S1.xlsx: The file contains details of 154 literature reports. From each paper, we extracted IAPS names (both as reported and standardized), taxonomic information (family and taxon rank), year, country, the scale of observation, and reported beneficial impacts. The beneficial impacts were further categorized into 13 use categories at TDWG (Taxonomic Databases Working Group) Level-1 states (in binary format - 1 indicates the IAPS use and 0 indicates not in use for the individual category).</p> <p>The Metadata_S1.pdf file contains detailed information on preparing literature records for data extraction, the data extraction process, and data organization. &nbsp;</p>

Information transfer in mammalian glycan-based communication

<p>Glycan-binding proteins, so-called lectins, are exposed on mammalian cell surfaces and decipher the information encoded within glycans translating it into biochemical signal transduction pathways in the cell. These glycan-lectin communication pathways are complex and difficult to analyze. However, quantitative data with single <span class="ins cts-3">-</span>cell resolution provide means to disentangle the associated signaling cascades. We chose C-type lectin receptors (<span class="jrnlPatterns">CTLs</span>) expressed on immune cells as a model system to study their capacity to transmit information encoded in glycans of incoming particles. In particular, we used <span class="del cts-4">NF-κB</span><span class="ins cts-4">nuclear factor kappa-B</span>-reporter cell lines expressing <span class="ins cts-4">DC-specific ICAM-3–grabbing nonintegrin<span class="ins cts-7"> <span class="ins cts-7">(DC-SIGN)</span></span></span><span class="del cts-4">DC-SIGN</span>, <span class="ins cts-4">macrophage C-type lectin (</span>MCL<span class="ins cts-4">)</span>, dectin-1, dectin-2, and <span class="del cts-4">mincle</span><span class="ins cts-4">macrophage-inducible C-type lectin<span class="ins cts-6"> (MINCLE)</span></span>, as well as TNFαR and TLR-1<span class="jrnlPatterns">&amp;</span><span class="jrnlPatterns">2</span> in monocytic cell lines and compared their transmission of glycan-encoded information. All receptors <span class="del cts-7">did </span>transmit information with similar signaling capacity, except dectin-2. This lectin was identified to <span class="ins cts-3">be </span>less efficient in information transmission compared to the other CTLs<span class="ins cts-3">,</span> and even wh<span class="del cts-7">ile </span><span class="ins cts-7">en </span>the sensitivity of the dectin-2 pathway was enhanced by overexpression of its co-receptor FcRγ, its transmitted information was not. Next, we expanded our investigation toward<span class="del cts-3">s</span> the integration of multiple signal transduction pathways including synergistic lectins, which is crucial during pathogen recognition. We show how the signaling capacity of lectin receptors using a similar signal transduction pathway (dectin-1 and dectin-2) <span class="del cts-3">are</span><span class="ins cts-3">is</span> being integrated by compromising between the lectins. In contrast, co-expression of MCL synergistically enhanced the dectin-2 signaling capacity, particularly at low <span class="ins cts-3">-</span>glycan stimulant concentration. Generalized LDPC codes for ultra reliable low latency communication in 5G and beyond

<p>Fifth-generation (5G) systems aim to increase the capacity of existing mobile networks by a factor of 1000, supporting an extremely high user density, as well as numerous device- to-device and machine communications. Ultra Reliable Low Latency Communication (URLLC) constitutes one of the critical operating regimes in 5G, since it will enable low-cost and power-efficient anywhere and anytime signalling services </p> <div> <div> <p>Generalized low-density parity-check (GLDPC) codes, where single parity-check constraints on the code bits are replaced with generalized constraints (an arbitrary linear code), are a promising class of codes for low-latency communication. We have constructed quasi-cyclic GLDPC codes, where the proportion of generalized constraints is determined by an asymptotic analysis. We have analyzed the complexity and performance of the message passing decoder with various update rules (including standard full-precision sum-product and min-sum algorithms) and quantization schemes for a GLDPC code over the additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) channel and determined a constraint-to-variable update rule based on the specific codewords of the component codes. This data set includes the simulated GLDPC code constructions and the block error rate performance, which is shown to outperform a variety of state- of-the-art code and decoder designs with suitable lengths and rates for the 5G ultra-reliable low-latency communication regime over an AWGN channel with quadrature PSK modulation.</p> </div> </div>

<p>Abstract of the Nature Communications paper (<span>doi:&nbsp;</span><a href="https://doi.org/10.1038/s41467-023-38380-1" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><span>https://doi.org/10.1038/s41467-023-38380-1</span></a>) from this dataset is: "Despite a century of research, our understanding of cement dissolution and precipitation processes at early ages is very limited. This is due to the lack of methods that can image these processes with enough spatial resolution, contrast and field of view. Here, we adapt near-field ptychographic nanotomography to in situ visualise the hydration of commercial Portland cement in a record-thick capillary. At 19h, porous C-S-H gel shell, thickness of 500 nm, covers every alite grain enclosing a water gap. The spatial dissolution rate of small alite grains in the acceleration period, &sim;100 nm/h, is approximately four times faster than that of large alite grains in the deceleration stage, &sim;25 nm/h. Etch-pit development has also been mapped out. This work is complemented by laboratory and synchrotron microtomographies, allowing to measure the particle size distributions with time. 4D nanoimaging will allow mechanistically study dissolution-precipitation processes including the roles of accelerators and superplasticizers. Data for: The public sphere as a normative ideal for public communications: From mass media to digital platforms

<p><span>Public sphere is a normative concept that has long been associated with traditional media; however, its validity and feasibility is tested under the digital media age. Implications needs to be valued under the growing concern over trust or mistrust against the social media, where 'mediasphere' became more relevant than 'public sphere'. This study employs systematic literature review as the main research approach, sampling from 7449 papers to 535 corpus, to investigate discussions of public sphere under the relevance of trust communications. Findings suggest that the term 'public sphere' has increased since 2017, with an explicit correlation with trust in media more broadly.  </span></p>

Intentional gestural communication in Hanuman langur

<p>Contrary to previous beliefs, intentional gestural communication (IGC) is not exclusive to the hominoid lineage but is also present in other non-human primates. Here, we report the presence of IGC among free-ranging Hanuman langur troop in Dakshineswar, West Bengal, India. These langurs exhibit a food-requesting behaviour wherein they use several gestures to communicate with the humans nearby. Moreover, they can also assess the recipient's mental state and persistently check if the signal (food request) has been received, waiting until they receive the desired food item. We have identified eight begging gestures used by langurs of all ages, except infants. The most common gesture is by holding cloth (BGc), but provocation-initiated begging (BGpi) and begging by embracing legs (BGe) efficiently direct these events to its success. The frequency of successful begging events is higher in the evening due to increased human interactions. Our findings suggest that ontogenetic ritualization might be at play here among these troop members as this gestural communication has been learned through imitation and reinforced by the reward of receiving food. Moreover, these successful begging events serve as an effective foraging strategy for urban-adapted langurs, allowing them to acquire high-calorie processed food items within a human-modified urban ecosystem. </p>

Linguistic law-like compression strategies emerge to maximize coding efficiency in marmoset vocal communication

<p>Human language follows statistical regularities or linguistic laws. For instance, Zipf's law of brevity states that the more frequently a word is used, the shorter it tends to be. All human languages adhere to this word structure. However, it is unclear whether Zipf's law emerged de novo in humans or whether it also exists in the non-linguistic vocal systems of our primate ancestors. Using a vocal conditioning paradigm, we examined the capacity of marmoset monkeys to efficiently encode vocalizations. We observed that marmosets adopted vocal compression strategies at three levels: (i) increasing call rate, (ii) decreasing call duration, and (iii) increasing the proportion of short calls. Our results demonstrate that marmosets, when able to freely choose what to vocalize, exhibit vocal statistical regularities consistent with Zipf's law of brevity that go beyond their context-specific natural vocal behavior. This suggests that linguistic laws emerged in non-linguistic vocal systems in the primate lineage.</p>

Network embedding for understanding the National Park System through the lenses of news media, scientific communication and biogeography

<p>The United States national parks encompass a variety of biophysical and historical resources important for national cultural heritage. Yet how these resources are socially constructed often depends upon the beholder. Parks tend to be conceptualized according to their (fixed) geographic context, so our understanding of this system of systems is dominated by this geographic lens. To expose the systemic structure that exists beyond their geographic embedding, we analyze three representations of the national park system using park-park similarity networks according to their co-occurrence in: (a) ~423,000 news media articles; (b) ~11,000 research publications; and (c) ~60,000 species inhabiting parks. We quantify structural variation between network representations by leveraging similarity measures at different scales: park-level (park-park correlations) and system-level (network communities' consistency). Because parks are governed and experienced at multiple scales, cross-network comparison informs how management should account for the varying objectives and constraints that dominate at each scale. Our results identify an interesting paradox: whereas park-level correlations depend strongly on the representative lens, the network communities are remarkably robust and consistent with the underlying geographic embedding. Our data-driven methodology is generalizable to other geographically embedded socio-environmental systems and supports the holistic analysis of systems-level structure that may elude other approaches.</p>
