Caravan - A global community dataset for large-sample hydrology
<p><strong>This is the </strong><strong>accompanying dataset to the following paper <a href="https://www.nature.com/articles/s41597-023-01975-w">https://www.nature.com/articles/s41597-023-01975-w</a></strong></p> <p><em>Caravan</em> is an open community dataset of meteorological forcing data, catchment attributes, and discharge daat for catchments around the world. Additionally, Caravan provides code to derive meteorological forcing data and catchment attributes from the same data sources in the cloud, making it easy for anyone to extend Caravan to new catchments. The vision of Caravan is to provide the foundation for a truly global open source community resource that will grow over time.</p> <p>If you use Caravan in your research, it would be appreciated to not only cite Caravan itself, but also the source datasets, to pay respect to the amount of work that was put into the creation of these datasets and that made Caravan possible in the first place.</p> <p><strong>All current development and additional community extensions can be found at <a href="https://github.com/kratzert/Caravan">https://github.com/kratzert/Caravan</a><br></strong><br><strong>IMPORTANT: Due to size limitations for individual repositories, the netCDF version and the CSV version of Caravan (since Version 1.6) are split into two different repositories. Community assets and relative rurality index
<p>The CARR (Community assets and relative rurality index) index is a continuous, multidimensional measure of rurality based on the concept of sustainable development that integrates measures of environmental, social, and economic resources. The index incorporates traditional rurality measures such as population density, distance from metropolitan areas, and developed area with measures of availability and accessibility of 70 different infrastructure types that support essential community services and community amenities. The index uses data last updated in 2019 and is available for census block-groups in the coterminous United States.</p> <p>This repository includes versions of CARR calculated for block groups (original) and versions of CARR aggregated to other conventional spatial units using and area-weighted averaging approach on the original block group data. Each zip folder includes the raw data, a metadata file, and a basic exploratory data analysis document in html format.</p> <p>The information for Version 2 of this repository, and additional information on CARR, can also be found at <a href="ruralityindex.com" target="_blank" rel="noopener">ruralityindex.com</a>.</p>

<p>The Knowledge Junction is a curated, open repository for the exchange of evidence and supporting materials used in food and feed safety risk assessments, with the goal of improving transparency, reproducibility and evidence reuse. The content of this repository can be used by EFSA's panels and working groups and any other interested parties when preparing for new risk assessments. </p> <p>The video tutorial describes the process of creating a new upload along with filling out the metadata based on the requirements for publishing objects in Knowledge Junction. </p> <p><strong>Objects suitable for submission to the repository</strong></p> <ul> <li>Objects which already have a DOI should <strong>not</strong> be published in the repository</li> <li>Objects which are subject to copy right restrictions should <strong>not</strong> be published in the repository</li> <li>All other evidence and supporting materials of relevant for food and feed safety will be accepted if the metadata provided is completed according to the instructions below</li> </ul>
Data from: Exploring hymenopteran parasitoid communities and their hosts: A comparative study of farmland and semi-natural ecotones with focus on pentatomoid bugs and their antagonists
<p>Here, we provide abundance data, the respective R-script and R-readable data files from a small-scale study on hymenopteran parasitoid communities and their hosts, with special focus on pentatomoid bugs and their egg parasitoids. This comparative study was conducted in farmland and semi-natural ecotones from June to September 2020 in South Tyrol, Italy. The fauna was sampled during four sampling events with sweep netting, beat netting, yellow pan traps, Malaise traps and visual inspections. Arthropods were identified to order level, hymenopteran parasitoids to family level, pentatomoid bugs to species level and egg parasitoids of pentatomoids as far as possible to species level. If identification was not possible, pentatomoid parasitoids were left at genus level. The abundance data collected with each survey method were pooled per survey events and survey site.</p>

Plant community compositional stability over 40 years in a Fraser River Estuary tidal freshwater marsh
<p class="MsoNormal"><span>Long-term data sets documenting temporal changes in vegetation communities are uncommon, yet imperative for understanding trends and triggering potential conservation management interventions. For example, decreasing species diversity and increasing non-native species abundance may be indicative of decreasing community stability. We explored long-term plant community change over a 40-year period through the contribution of data collected in 2019 to two historical datasets collected in 1979 and 1999 to evaluate decadal changes in plant community biodiversity in a tidal freshwater marsh in the Fraser River Estuary in British Columbia, Canada. We found that plant assemblages were characterized by similar indicator species, but most other indicator species changed, and that overall </span><span>α-diversity</span><span> decreased while </span><span>β</span><span>-diversity increased. Further, we found evidence for plant assemblage homogenization through the increased abundance of invasive species such as yellow flag iris (<em>Iris pseudacorus</em>), and reed canary grass (<em>Phalaris arundinacea</em>). These observations may inform concepts of habitat stability in the absence of direct anthropogenic disturbance and corroborate globally observed trends of native species loss and non-native species encroachment. Our results indicate that within the Fraser River Estuary, active threat management may be necessary in areas of conservation concern in order to prevent further native species biodiversity loss. </span></p>
Experimental assessment of cross-species transmission in a natural multihost–multivector–multipathogen community
<p class="MsoNormal">Vector-borne pathogens (VBPs), many of which cause major suffering worldwide, often circulate in diverse wildlife communities comprising multiple reservoir host and/or vector species. However, the complexities of these systems make it challenging to determine the contributions these different species make to transmission. We experimentally manipulated transmission within a natural multihost–multipathogen–multivector system, by blocking flea-borne pathogen transmission from either of two co-occurring host species (bank voles and wood mice). Through genetic analysis of the resulting infections in the hosts and vectors, we show that both host species likely act together to maintain the overall flea community, but cross-species pathogen transmission is relatively rare – most pathogens were predominantly found in only one host species, and there were few cases where targeted treatment affected pathogens in the other host species. However, we do provide experimental evidence of some reservoir-spillover dynamics whereby reductions of some infections in one host species are obtained by blocking transmission from the other host species. Overall, despite the apparent complexity of such systems, we show there can be 'covert simplicity', whereby pathogen transmission is primarily dominated by single host species, potentially facilitating the targeting of key hosts for control, even in diverse ecological communities.</p>
Unraveling community adaption and survival strategy of soil microbiome under vanadium stress in nationwide mining environments
<p class="Abstract"><span><span>The vanadium (V) smelters soil harbor wide ranges of microorganisms, whose survival relies on their metabolic activities under stress.</span><span> Nonetheless, the characteristics and functions of soil microbiome in V mining environments have not been recognized at a continental scale. This study investigates microbial diversity, community assembly and metabolic traits of soil microbiome across 90 V smelters in China. A decrease in alpha diversity is observed, along with community variation, which is also jointly explained by other environmental, climatic and geographic factors. Null model shows that V promotes homogeneous selection. V also mediates co-occurrence patterns, with increased positive interspecific associations under higher V concentrations (</span><span>></span><span>559.6 mg/kg)</span><span>, e.g., <em>f_Gemmatimonadaceae</em>, <em>Nocardioides</em>, <em>Micromonospora</em>, <em>Rubrobacter</em>.</span><span> In addition, 67 metagenome assembled genomes are retrieved via metagenomic analysis. The metabolic pathways of keystone taxa are disentangled to reveal their putative involvement in the V(V) reduction process. Nitrate and nitrite reductase (<em>nirK</em>, <em>narG</em>), and <em>mtrABC</em> are found to be taxonomically affiliated with <em>Micromonospora</em>. sp, <em>FEN-1250</em>. sp, <em>Nocardioides</em>. sp, etc. Additionally, reverse citric acid cycle (rTCA) serves the main carbon fixation pathway, synthetizing alternative energy for putative V reducers, highlighting a synergistic relationship between autotrophic and heterotrophic processes to support the microbial survival. Our findings comprehensively reveal the driving forces for soil community variation under V stress, suggesting the robust strategies adopted by indigenous microorganisms to alleviate V impact, which can be exploited for bioremediation application.</span></span></p>
Periodical cicadas disrupt trophic dynamics via community-level shifts in Avian Foraging
<p>Once every 13 or 17 years within eastern North American deciduous forests, billions of periodical cicadas concurrently emerge from the soil and briefly satiate a diverse array of naive consumers, offering a rare opportunity to assess the cascading impacts of an ecosystem-wide resource pulse on a complex food web. Here, we quantify the effects of the 2021 Brood X emergence, and report that >80 bird species opportunistically switched their foraging to include cicadas, releasing herbivorous insects from predation, and essentially doubling both caterpillar densities and accumulated herbivory levels on host oak trees. These short-lived but massive emergence events help us to understand how resource pulses can rewire interaction webs and disrupt energy flows in ecosystems, with potentially long-lasting effects. </p> <p> </p>
Raw sequencing data for studying the colonization of soil communities after glacier retreat
<p>Glaciers show a pattern of retreat at the global scale. Deglaciated areas are exposed and colonized by multiple organisms, but lack of global studies hampers a complete understanding of the future of these ecosystems. Until now, the complete reconstruction of soil communities was hampered by the complex identification of organisms, thus analyses at broad geographical and taxonomic scale have been so far impossible. The dataset used for this study represents the assemblages of Bacteria, Mycota, Eukaryota, Collembola (springtails), Oligochaeta (Earth worms), Insecta, Arthropoda and Vascular Plants obtained using environmental DNA (eDNA) metabarcoding. eDNA was extracted from soil samples collected from multiple glacier forelands representative of some of the main mountain chains of Europe, Asia, the Americas and Oceania. We investigated chronosequences of glacier retreat (i.e., the chronological sequence of specific geomorphological features along deglaciated areas for which the date of glacier retreat is known) ranging from recent years to the Little Ice Age (~1850). We used this newly assembled global DNA metabarcoding dataset to obtain a complete reconstruction of community changes in novel ecosystems after glacier retreat. Information on assemblages can be then combined with analyses of soil, landscape and climate to identify the drivers of community changes.</p>
BLE RSSI Database for Analyzing Routines of Community-Dwelling Older Adults

SSH CENTRE - Mini-reports : Focus groups on "Adaptation to Climate Change: support at least 150 European regions and communities to become climate resilient by 2030"
<p>SSH CENTRE (Social Sciences and Humanities for Climate, Energy aNd Transport Research Excellence) is a Horizon Europe project, engaging directly with stakeholders across research, policy, and business (including citizens) to strengthen social innovation, SSH-STEM collaboration, transdisciplinary policy advice, inclusive engagement, and SSH communities across Europe, accelerating the EU's transition to carbon neutrality. </p><p>SSH CENTRE is based in a range of activities related to Open Science, inclusivity and diversity – especially with regards Southern and Eastern Europe and different career stages – including: development of novel SSH-STEM collaborations to facilitate the delivery of the EU Green Deal; SSH knowledge brokerage to support regions in transition; and the effective design of strategies for citizen engagement in EU R&I activities. Outputs include action-led agendas and building stakeholder synergies through regular Policy Insight events.</p><p>This is captured in a high-profile virtual SSH CENTRE generating and sharing best practice for SSH policy advice, overcoming fragmentation to accelerate the EU's journey to a sustainable future.</p><p>The aim of the focus groups was to gather citizen's perspectives, their hopes, concerns and ideas related to the Horizon Mission of Adaptation to Climate Change: support at least 150 European regions and communities to become climate resilient by 2030. The focus group discussion topics while remaining close to the Mission, avoid specific technical references to allow citizens to contribute based on their differing levels of understanding. As part of the SSH CENTRE project, in total, four focus group series will be conducted relating to Adaptation to Climate Change; Restore our Ocean and Waters by 2030; 100 Climate-Neutral and Smart Cities by 2030; A Soil Deal for Europe. </p><p>Notes were taken during each focus groups and turned into mini-reports. These mini-reports sum up the essence of the discussion: the participants' main ideas and some interesting quotes. </p>
