Application of inverse theory for high spatial resolution reconstructions of thermospheric vector wind fields from Doppler shifts measured by a ground-based network of all-sky Fabry-Perot interferometers

<p>Several types of all-sky viewing Fabry-Perot Interferometers (FPI) have been developed since the 1990s for ground-based remote sensing of thermospheric winds. The Scanning Doppler Imager (SDI) is one such instrument, which provides temporally simultaneous line-of-sight observations from hundreds of independent look directions per instrument exposure. A geographically distributed network of such instruments increases spatial coverage and, at many locations, also provides overlapping observations along multiple independent lines-of-sight. Together, these characteristics significantly increase the density and fidelity that is possible for reconstructed thermospheric vector wind fields, compared to a traditional narrow-field FPI, but at the cost of complexity and difficulty.<br><br></p> <p>Presently, we describe an application of inverse theory to reconstruct three-component vector thermospheric neutral wind fields using data from multiple SDI instruments. The salient features of the method used here are the ability to reconstruct three-component winds on a dense grid that is sampled regularly in latitude, longitude, and time, without assuming any a-priori underlying structure of the winds. This requires solving an inverse problem that does not in general yield a unique solution unless additional constraints are enforced. We describe this step, also known also as regularization, along with the strategy used to maximize the spatial resolution of the derived wind fields by automatically determining the minimum level of regularization that can produce stable inversions. We present example results obtained from applying this technique to one night of data from a network of SDIs in Alaska, and discuss the implications of these results for current understanding of thermospheric dynamics.</p>

Crowd-sourced SfM: Best practices for high resolution monitoring of coastal cliffs and bluffs

<p>Digital oblique photos of an approximately 2.0 km alongshore reach of seaward-facing coastal bluff faces on the Strait of Juan de Fuca, Washington State, were collected at least quarterly between 2016 and 2022. In total over 3900 photos were collected over 38 separate surveys. The photos were collected to support digital surface reconstructions using Structure-from-Motion (SfM) photogrammetry, and specifically to assess the quality of surfaces generated with photos collected using relatively simple techniques that could be accessible to community science programs. A secondary goal was to use the photos, and the digital surfaces generated with them, to evaluate patterns and rates of erosion on the bluff face. </p>

Exploring Jupiter's Polar Deformation Lengths with High Resolution Shallow Water Modeling

<p>Movies for simulations of non-dimensional eddy potential vorticity generated using the Pencil Code for the article &quot;Exploring Jupiter&#39;s Polar Deformation Lengths with High Resolution Shallow Water Modeling&quot;.&nbsp; These movies show the Jovian North polar region in the co-rotating frame using the shallow water approximation with the gamma-plane approximation.&nbsp; Simulations named with a preceding A correspond to Case A (Figure 2 in the article), while those with B correspond to Case B (Figure 5 in the article).&nbsp; Red indicates cyclonic behavior and&nbsp;blue indicates anticyclonic behavior.</p> <p>Long term trends are clear for most cases as early as day 10,000.&nbsp; However, the dynamical behavior of the system&nbsp;continues to evolve well past energy equilibration.&nbsp; For more details regarding these simulations, please read the parent article in the Planetary Science Journal.</p>

GPR-BMP-SPI: High spatial resolution multi-scale SPI datasets over China from January 1984 to December 2020

<p>The datasets include standard precipitation index (SPI) at 1-month, 3-month, 6-month, 9-month and 12-month scales over the main terrestrial lands of China from January 1984 to December 2020. The SPI datasets were produced by blending the information from meteorological stations, and precipitation products, as well as topographical and geographical variables based on Gaussian process regression (GPR) models.</p> <p>The&nbsp;meteorological station data are from&nbsp;the China Meteorological Data Service Centre. Five precipitation products are used: (1) CHIRPS Daily: Climate Hazards Group InfraRed Precipitation With Station Data (Version 2.0 Final); (3) ERA5-Land Monthly Averaged by Hour of Day - ECMWF Climate Reanalysis; (3) FLDAS: Famine Early Warning Systems Network (FEWS NET) Land Data Assimilation System; (4) PERSIANN-CDR: Precipitation Estimation From Remotely Sensed Information Using Artificial Neural Networks-Climate Data Record; (5) TerraClimate: Monthly Climate and Climatic Water Balance for Global Terrestrial Surfaces.</p> <p>The maps of the difference of the confidence intervals (the upper prediction limit minus the lower prediction limit) at a significance level of 95% are also provided to show the spatial uncertainty of every single SPI map.</p> <p>The drought events were counted during 1984-2020 at annual and seasonal scales. High-resolution climate simulations using the Model for Prediction Across Scales - Atmosphere (MPAS-A; version 5.1)

<p>We present multi-seasonal simulations representative of present-day and future environments using the global Model for Prediction Across Scales – Atmosphere (MPAS-A) version 5.1 with high resolution (15 km) throughout the Northern Hemisphere. We select 10 simulation years with varying phases of El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO) and integrate each for 14.5 months. We use analyzed sea surface temperature (SST) patterns for present-day simulations. For the future climate simulations, we alter present-day SSTs by applying monthly-averaged temperature changes derived from a 20-member ensemble of Coupled Model Intercomparison Project phase 5 (CMIP5) general circulation models (GCMs) following the Representative Concentration Pathway (RCP) 8.5 emissions scenario. Daily sea ice fields, obtained from the monthly-averaged CMIP5 ensemble mean sea ice, are used for present-day and future simulations.</p> <p>Due to storage limitations, the full dataset is much too large to be published (~50TB). Instead, a subset consisting of 6-hourly warm season (May-September) 2-meter temperature, precipitation, and 500hPa height is presented. If you wish to access the full dataset (as presented in Michaelis et al. 2019), please contact one of the authors.</p>

A high-resolution earthquake catalog for the Tony Creek dual Microseismic Experiment (ToC2ME)

<p>Location/detection method:&nbsp;In this study, we revisit the continuous recordings that are acquired by 69 three-component nodes at a Hydraulic&nbsp;Fracturing&nbsp;(HF)&nbsp;site in Alberta, Canada, taking advantage of a machine learning-based seismic detection and location workflow (LOC-FLOW). This workflow integrates four key steps to generate earthquake catalogs, including phase picking using neural network (PhaseNet), rapid association of seismic phases (REAL), seismic location (e.g., VELEST) as well as relocation (e.g., hypoDD).&nbsp;The catalog contains&nbsp;21,619&nbsp;earthquakes with magnitudes down to -2&nbsp;and achieves a&nbsp;high location accuracy at meter scale. The improved earthquake locations allow us to better delineate the fractures and faults activated during the HF.&nbsp;Our results further reveal the complexity of the triggering mechanism of HF-induced earthquakes according to the statistical analysis of the frequency-magnitude distribution of earthquakes. Our study suggests that multiple factors, including pore fluid pressure due to fluid injection and perturbation in the stress field caused by earthquakes, can jointly control the spatiotemporal variations of regional seismicity during the multi-stage HF operation.&nbsp;</p>

High resolution ancient sedimentary DNA shows that alpine plant diversity is associated with human land use and climate change

<p>The European Alps are highly rich in species, but their future may be threatened by ongoing changes in human land use and climate. Here, we reconstructed vegetation, temperature, human impact and livestock over the past ~12,000 years from Lake Sulsseewli, based on sedimentary ancient plant and mammal DNA, pollen, spores, chironomids, and microcharcoal. We assembled a highly-complete local DNA reference library (PhyloAlps, 3,923 plant taxa), and used this to obtain an exceptionally rich <em>sed</em>aDNA record of 366 plant taxa. Vegetation mainly responded to climate during the early Holocene, while human activity had an additional influence on vegetation from 6 ka onwards. Land-use shifted from episodic grazing during the Neolithic and Bronze Age to agropastoralism in the Middle Ages. Associated human deforestation allowed the coexistence of plant species typically found at different elevational belts, leading to levels of plant richness that characterise the current high diversity of this region. Our findings indicate a positive association between low-intensity agropastoral activities and precipitation with the maintenance of the unique subalpine and alpine plant diversity of the European Alps.</p>

This dataset spans 10 years, <em>from 2011-02 until 2020-12-31</em>.</p> <p>This dataset is the preprocessed 1 Hz observational record of direct, diffuse, and global horizontal irradiance, which is the basis for the official BSRN 1-minute dataset published at <a href="https://doi.pangaea.de/10.1594/PANGAEA.940531">PANGAEA</a>. Please refer to the official dataset for detailed metadata, instrument information, quality control flags, the full radiation balance and more (1 minute resolution).
