Cryptic sexual dimorphism reveals differing selection pressures on continental islands - Sulawesi Babbler (Pellorneum celebense) Morphometric Dataset

<p>Birds are well known for their sexual dimorphism. But not all forms of dimorphism are the same, and differences in morphology can be so subtle that they aren't detected by casual observation. We report that this is the case with the Sulawesi Babbler (<i>Pellorneum celebense</i>), the first reported instance of sexual dimorphism in this species or any of the ground babblers of the Southeast Asian islands. Our finding is based on a combination of morphometric analyses, genetic sexing, and observation of breeding condition. We highlight the utility of unsupervised clustering approaches, widely used in the biomedical literature, for the investigation of sexual dimorphism in ecological and evolutionary contexts.</p> <p>The sexual dimorphism was weaker on the mainland of Sulawesi and stronger on the continental islands of Kabaena, Muna, and Buton. This suggests that different evolutionary pressures have led the species to partition niches differently in these habitats, which separated only recently in geological history. This kind of intraspecific niche partitioning is an intrinsic part of the ecological niche of such species, one we must not miss if we are to fully understand these endlessly fascinating organisms and systems.</p>

Small, odd and old: The mysterious Tarsius pumilus is the most basal Sulawesi tarsier

<p>In this study we present the first genetic evidence of the phylogenetic position of <em>Tarsius pumilus</em>, the mountain tarsier of Sulawesi, Indonesia. This mysterious primate is the only Eastern tarsier species that occurs exclusively in cloud forests above 1800 m asl. It exhibits striking morphological peculiarities – most prominently its extremely reduced body size, which led to the common name of "pygmy tarsier". However, our results indicate that <em>T. pumilus</em> is not an aberrant form of a lowland tarsier, but in fact the most basal of all Sulawesi tarsiers. Applying a Bayesian multi-locus coalescent approach we dated the divergence between the <em>T. pumilus</em> lineage and the ancestor of all other extant tarsiers to 9.88 MYA. This is as deep as the split between the two other tarsier genera <em>Carlito</em> (Philippine tarsiers) and <em>Cephalopachus</em> (Western tarsiers), and predates further tarsier diversification on Sulawesi by around 7 million years. The date coincides with the deepening of marine environment between eastern and western Sulawesi, which likely led to allopatric speciation between <em>T. pumilus</em> or its predecessor in the west and the ancestor of all other Sulawesi tarsiers in the east. As the split preceded the emergence of permanent mountains in western Sulawesi, it is unlikely that the shift to montane habitat has driven the formation of the <em>T. pumilus</em> lineage.</p>

An inventory of school buildings in Central Sulawesi (Indonesia) developed through a mixed-mode data collection approach

<p>Urban disaster risk management and reduction requires the development and periodic updating of regional building inventories. However, the development of such inventories can be very cost-intensive and time-consuming, making this a challenging task, particularly for low- and middle-income countries.</p> <p>We used a combination of side-walk and remote survey methods to develop an inventory of 2536 school buildings in Central Sulawesi, Indonesia. The Central Sulawesi region was affected by the 28th September 2018 Palu earthquake. The moment magnitude (Mw) 7.5 earthquake caused intense ground shaking in the epicentral area, triggering liquefaction, tsunami and major landslides, leading to over 4,000 fatalities and 165,000 displaced people. At least 1299 schools were reported to have been damaged or collapsed, affecting about 184,000 students.</p> <p>The developed inventory includes information on location, number of stories, occupancy characteristics (building use and population), age, type of lateral load resisting systems, building materials, structural vulnerabilities, and structural conditions following the 2018 earthquake.</p> <p>The developed database can be used in pre-event/long-term risk analysis and management, post-event/near-real-time loss estimation, and regional-level decision-making on school assets and related policies. The database has been made available for public use and can be readily harmonised with similar databases for other regions.</p> <p>This data repository also contains information on interviews with 30 school principals in the region. The interview details the damage states and functional recovery trajectory of school buildings in the 30 schools.</p>
