Seasonal seabird density and richness of seabirds off Southern California from sampling aboard California Cooperative Oceanic Fisheries Investigations (CalCOFI) cruises, 1987 - 2006.
The observational data have been collected as part of long-term fisheries oceanography and seabird monitoring programs designed to inform management of California Current Ecosystem living marine resources. Information collected on seabird distribution and abundance at sea off southern California has been obtained since May 1987 as part of the California Cooperative Oceanic Fisheries Investigation (CalCOFI; http://www.calcofi.net). This program, initiated by R.R. Veit and J.A. McGowan, with funding from the National Science Foundation, has resulted in density (no. birds/km2) estimates of ~60 species of seabirds over the period 1987-present (Veit et al. 1996, 1997, Hyrenbach and Veit 2003, Yen et al. 2006).

Size fractionation of total Chl a larger and smaller than 8 μm data generated by Mike Mullin of the Marine Life Research Group, aboard CalCOFI (California Cooperative Oceanic Fisheries Investigations) cruises of the coast of California, January 1994 - October 1996.
Based on twelve quarterly cruises over three years, the relative importance and absolute biomass of phytoplankton retained on an 8 mu m-pore membrane filter increased as the depth of the nitricline decreased, even though biomass of macrozooplankton (potential grazers) also increased as the nitricline shoaled. The relative importance of greater than or equal to 8 mu m cells was inversely related to a proxy for their biomass-specific mortality (biomass of macrozooplankton/biomass of greater than or equal to 8 mu m cells), as was their "residual" biomass not predicted from the nitricline depth

Supporting fisheries management with genomic tools: a case study of kingklip (Genypterus capensis) off southern Africa
<p>Kingklip, <i>Genypterus capensis</i>, is a valuable fish resource in southern African waters, with a wide geographic distribution spanning South Africa and Namibia. Previous studies have provided evidence for multiple stocks in South Africa, but the extent of stock structuring across the Southern African region remains unclear. In this study, we genotyped over 40 000 SNPs to characterise the spatial distribution of genomic variation for <i>G. capensis </i>throughout its core distribution. Results suggest that fish sampled at the northernmost range (off central Namibia) are characterised by lower genomic diversity, although the region exhibited the highest number of private SNPs, suggesting some degree of geographic isolation. Using neutral and putative outlier loci independently, we show that kingklip exhibits three population clusters, "northern Benguela", "southern Benguela" and South African "South Coast". Population differentiation was observed only using "outlier" loci, suggesting that local adaptation might be one of the main drivers of the observed differentiation. Overall, our research provides novel insights into the regional dynamics that can support the sustainable long-term exploitation of this valuable fisheries resource.</p>

Managing for Diversity: keeping everyone afloat in Irish fisheries (animation, 6:47, 2020)
<p><em>Managing for Diversity: keeping everyone afloat in Irish fisheries (6:47, 2020)</em> is a short animation about the diversity of Ireland's fishing industry, with a focus on the offshore islands small-scale fleet. Almost three thousand islanders live on eighteen islands off the west coast of Ireland. These islands are not connected to the mainland by a land causeway. While many of these islands are dependent on a small-scale fishing industry for survival, their fishing communities face challenges in navigating complex fisheries governance systems at local, regional, national and EU scales. This animation is intended to provide a snapshot of the complexity of the issues at play and the difficulties for small-scale boats in accessing the fish that are a public resource. How adaptive capacity shapes the Adapt, React, Cope Response to climate impacts: insights from small-scale fisheries
<p>As the impacts of climate change on human society accelerate, coastal communities are vulnerable to changing environmental conditions. The capacity of communities and households to respond to these changes (i.e., their adaptive capacity) will determine the impacts of climate and co-occurring stressors. To date, empirical evidence linking theoretical measures of adaptive capacity to community and household responses remains limited. Here we conduct a global meta-analysis examining how metrics of adaptive capacity translate to human responses to change (Adapt, React, Cope Response) in 22 small-scale fishing case studies from 20 countries (n=191 responses). Using both thematic and Qualitative Comparative Analysis, we evaluate how responses to climate, environmental, and social change were influenced by domains of adaptive capacity. Our findings show that adaptive responses at the community level only occurred in situations where the community had Access to Assets, in combination with other domains including Diversity and Flexibility, Learning and Knowledge, and Natural Capital. In contrast, Access to Assets was nonessential for adaptive responses at the household level. Adaptive households demonstrated Diversity and Flexibility when supported by strong Governance or Institutions and were able often able to substitute Learning and Knowledge and Natural Capital with one another. Standardized metrics of adaptive capacity are essential to designing effective policies promoting resilience in natural resource-dependent communities and understanding how social and ecological aspects of communities interact to influence responses. Our framework describes how small-scale fishing communities and households respond to environmental changes and can inform policies that support vulnerable populations.</p>
Data from: Functional genetic diversity in an exploited marine species and its relevance to fisheries management
<p>The timing of reproduction influences key evolutionary and ecological processes in wild populations. Variation in reproductive timing may be an especially important evolutionary driver in the marine environment, where the high mobility of many species and few physical barriers to migration provide limited opportunities for spatial divergence to arise, and where many species synchronize their reproduction to seasonal cycles of planktonic productivity. Using genomic data collected from spawning aggregations of Pacific herring (<i>Clupea pallasii</i>) across 1,600 km of coastline, we show that reproductive timing drives population structure in these pelagic fish. Within a specific spawning season we observed isolation by distance, indicating that gene flow is limited over our study area. These results emphasize the importance of considering both seasonal and spatial variation in reproductive timing when delineating management units for Pacific herring. On several chromosomes we detected linkage disequilibrium extending over millions of base pairs, suggesting the presence of chromosomal rearrangements. The frequencies of putative chromosomal rearrangements differed between populations spawning at different times of year. Spawning phenology was highly correlated with polymorphisms in several genes, in particular <i>SYNE2</i>, which influences the development of retinal photoreceptors in vertebrates. <i>SYNE2 </i>is likely within a chromosomal rearrangement in Pacific herring and is also associated with spawn timing in Atlantic herring (<i>Clupea harengus</i>). The observed genetic diversity likely underlies resource waves provided by spawning herring and demonstrates how population-level genetic diversity can influence ecosystem processes. Given the ecological, economic, and cultural significance of herring, our results support that conserving intraspecific genetic diversity is important for maintaining current and future ecosystem processes.</p>
