Summer high frequency measurements of dissolved O2 and CO2 concentrations and water temperature at the surface of 11 northern lakes

This dataset includes high frequency paired measurements of dissolved O2 and CO2 concentrations at the surface (0.5 to 2 m depth) of 11 lakes in the Northern Hemisphere. Measurements were taken every 2 hours in summer (July and August) of various years depending on lakes (between 2011 and 2014). The dataset is used to test a conceptual framework on the controls of coupling and decoupling of these two gases. In all lakes dissolved CO2 was measured with infrared analyzer coupled with a diffusion membrane and dissolved O2 with optodes. All gas measurements are paired with water temperature provided by one of the gas probe (usually from the O2 probe).

Measurements of water column depth at 5 minute intervals in West Falmouth Harbor, West Falmouth, MA, 2016-2025

Water level measurements at 5 minute intervals at the West Falmouth Harbor town dock (West Falmouth, MA, USA), collected during the summer sampling season only. Dates vary by year. Pressures were collected from a pair of Onset HOBO U20L sensors, one submerged in a stilling well and one above the water surface, and depths were calculated in Onset's Hoboware Pro using the Barometric Compenation Assistant. Depths were collected relative to the location of the pressure transducer.

Measurements of water column specific conductivity, salinity, dissolved oxygen, chlorophyll, temperature, and pH by deployed datasondes every 20 minutes for several periods during the summertime in 2017-2020

West Falmouth Harbor (West Falmouth, MA, USA) has been experiencing a dramatic increase in nitrogen loading from an upgradient municipal wastewater treatment facility since the early 2000's. As part of a long-term study into the effects of this nitrogen enrichment, we have measured water column parameters at 20 minute intervals in two locations within West Falmouth Harbor (West Falmouth, MA, USA), one in the well-flushed outer basin and one in the inner basin closer to the dominant groundwater N source. The goal of this dataset is to compare conditions at the two sites, as well as to derive rates of metabolism. Parameters measured include temperature, specific conductivity, salinity, dissolved oxygen, chlorophyll, and pH. YSI Datasondes were deployed during 4 periods ranging from 6 to 11 days in July and August, suspended vertically from a surface buoy. Over all deployments, instruments passed all QA checks, and average differences between the two instruments over all deployments were less than 0.06 degrees C (temperature), 0.3 (salinity), 0.05 (pH), 1.0 µg/L (chlorophyll), 1.5 (%DO Saturation). Data provided here are not corrected for drift, and chlorophyll data are uncorrected as reported by the instruments. Chlorophyll reported is uncorrected from the YSI calculation based on in-situ fluorescence and calibration with a single-point using deionized water. Lab fluorometric analysis checks show that the YSI chlorophyll is over-reporting by at least 20% at low concentrations, and high concentrations were not able to be validated. Measurement differences between air temperature instruments used at H.J. Andrews meteorological stations

The PRIMET Horizontal Radiation Shield Comparison (PHRSC) experiment compares the difference between the air temperature measurements of a reference temperature sensor inside a fan aspirated radiation shield and temperature sensors located inside passively aspirated radiation shields including a cotton region shelter, Gill multi-plate shield, and a custom-fabricated model. Observed variables include air temperature, wind speed, and incoming and reflected solar radiation. Data was collected in the field between 2010 and 2017 at the Primary Meteorological Station (PRIMET) at H.J. Andrews Experimental Forest, located in Oregon’s Western Cascades (44.21, -122.26, elevation 430m).

Stream and hyporheic carbon dioxide (CO2) measurements in a headwater catchment, Watershed 1, and throughout Lookout Creek watershed at the HJ Andrews Experimental Forest, July 2013 to July 2014

We examined the spatial and temporal variability of stream carbon dioxide (CO2) in a headwater catchment. We measured stream and hyporheic pCO2 at at 30-minute intervals over 11 months in 95.9-ha Watershed 1, HJ Andrews Experimental Forest. We also measured stream temperature, pH and alkalinity which we used to calculate CO2 at monthly intervals from July 2013 through July 2014 at 38 locations across the 6400-ha HJ Andrews Experimental Forest.

Vertical tree air temperature measurements within the canopy of the HJ Andrews Experimental Forest, 2011-2019

Vertical air temperature from 11 trees in the Andrews Forest has been collecting beginning in 2011. The trees are at a variety of elevations and are of various species and ages. The 11 trees were selected form the H.J Andrews phenology study air temperature network (MS045). This study examines air temperatures at multiple heights in each tree. The first sensor is at 1.5 m and subsequent sensors measure every 5 m up the tree. Each sensor includes a light (illumination) sensor, which can be used to assess the value of the data. This is not a measurement of the actual light conditions.

Eddy Flux Measurements, Tussock Station, Imnavait Creek, Alaska - 2006

The Biocomplexity Station was established in 2005 to measure landscape-level carbon, water and energy balances at Imnavait Creek, Alaska. The station is now contributing valuable data to the Arctic Observing Network that was established at two nearby stations. These will form part of a network of observatories with Abisko (Sweden), Zackenburg (Greenland) and a location in the Canadian High Arctic which will provide further data points as part of the International Polar Year. This particular part of the project focuses on simultaneous measurements of carbon, water and energy fluxes of the terrestrial landscape at hourly, daily, seasonal and multi-year time scales. These are the major regulatory drivers of the Arctic climate system and form key linkages and feedbacks between the land surface, the atmosphere and the oceans. We will provide a comprehensive description of the state of the regional Arctic system with respect to these variables, its overall regulation and controlling features and its interaction with the global system.

White spruce trees tagged measured for total height and girth at 10 centimeter height, and leader length, Coldfoot, Alaska 2015, 2016

White spruce seedlings have colonized the site of the Coldfoot transplant garden (CF, 67°15′32″N, 150°10′12″W) since the original garden was established in 1982. Some trees are 2-3 meter tall. All seedlings and trees within the current (2014) garden were tagged, located with a Global Positioning System (GPS) receiver, and measured in 2015 and 2016 for total height and girth at 10 centimeter height and leader length.

Ion exchange membrane measure of nutrient availability of the 2015 experimental burn at Toolik Lake Field Station, Alaska 2016

An experimental burn conducted in the summer of 2015 to provide sites for an experiment whether seeds of Eriophorum vaginatum from different ecotypes could establish in recently burned areas. It consisted of ten 2 meter X 2 meter plots along with a similar number of control plots. There was little seedling establishment but other data were collected on the plots. Ion exchange membranes were used to measure nutrient availability over two time periods: Early season (June) and mid season (July).

Kuparuk River stream temperature and discharge measured each summer, Dalton Road crossing, Arctic LTER Toolik Field Staion, Alaska 1978-2019

Stream temperature and discharge measured each summer for several streams in the Toolik area. In many years, temperature and stream height were recorded manually each day. In recent years, dataloggers have measured stream temperature and stream height at regular intervals. The Kuparuk River data was maintained by Doug Kane and the Water and Environmental Research Center at UAF through 2017 (http://ine.uaf.edu/werc/projects/NorthSlope/upper_kuparuk/upper_kuparuk....). Stream height is converted into stream discharge based on a rating curve calculated from manual discharge measurements throughout the season. The principal investigator in charge of the temperature and discharge measurements is Dr. Breck Bowden. Note: This file replaces older yearly files of discharge and temperatures
